I have never written an online review, but I felt compelled to share our experience to caution other renters from renting from Wyrick's Lodges.
We went 17 hours (6pm-11am) without electricity or running water during a thunderstorm while staying at Hilltop Hideaway. We could not bathe, brush our teeth, or flush the toilet. When we awoke the next morning and the power was still out, we had to go to a restaurant to eat breakfast- an additional expense. We had to throw away all of our food in the refrigerator and buy replacement food. The cordless house phone wasn’t functional without electricity and our cell phones had no service. I had to drive a long time to get cell service to call in the outage myself.
I called the office number the next day and requested a refund for that evening, citing the above reasons. I spoke to a woman, I believe one of the owners, who told me they live “1 minute away” and they were aware of the power outage because they also did not have power. They had called the electric company.
If they lived so close, why didn’t they stop over to make sure we were ok and to communicate the electric company was aware? She offered no empathy for our experience. In fact, she sounded irritated by my complaint.
The woman I spoke to said the decision about a refund was up to “Todd.” She took my phone number and I was told he would call me later that evening. He did not call.
A few days later, now back at home, I followed up with an email to Todd, asking him to address my concern and request for a refund. No response.
A few days later I called the office number and spoke to Todd. He said he had received my email and had been thinking about his decision. He said his policy is not to give refunds for "acts of God" and stated no full refund would be issued. He was considering a $50 refund as a gesture. He assured me he would make a decision later that evening and email me back. He did not.
I am a reasonable person and I realize they do not control the weather or the electric company. But they do control how they run their company and customer service. What about making things right for their cabin guests?
The Wyrick's think it is acceptable to charge us $224.10 for a day during which we had no electricity or running water for 17 hours. I cannot imagine a hotel charging guests for a room without electricity or running water. I would expect to be placed in a different hotel or refunded.
In summary, the cabin itself was nicer than we expected. If you don't have any problems during your stay, everything should be fine. If you do have problems, know that it is very hard to reach anyone at the office and you won't have any help.
I would not recommend renting from Wyrick's Lodges based on the way they decide to run their company - poor communication and avoidance when there...
Read moreStayed at Hemlock Trace in October 2022. The website does not do the mini-lodge justice with its description and pictures. It is gorgeous, homey, and has everything you need especially in the stocked kitchen. I especially appreciated the spice cabinet! The owners made some really smart decisions when it came to appliances. The fridge chilled my milk wonderfully. The grill was the best we've seen out of the ~10 places we've stayed at in recent years. My friend looked it up and found it to be quite affordable and available at Walmart. So smart! The only reason I dropped a start is because of the bed in the master bedroom. The mattress had a steep dip in the middle and the bad was very squeaky when anyone moved. We were only two people and wanted to keep our footprint in the cabin small so we didn't try a different bed every night. Because of that bed, I would consider some of their other properties first; however, if they ever respond to this post saying they fixed it, it's a 5-star experience!
One piece of advice -- if you plan on using the gas firepit, bring a lighter! That was the one thing I couldn't find in their otherwise well...
Read moreWhat an incredible outfit! The cabin we stayed in, sandstone, was fantastic. It was super clean upon our arrival. There were numerous items within the cabin that made our stay enjoyable and accommodated all of our needs. The owners have been extremely helpful and have always answered any question I had prior to our arrival in a reasonable timeframe. They even upon request provided many great suggestions for our trip which all that we used proved to be incredible. I’ve gone to many different places and rented several cabins in the past, most have been good. The last one prior to this trip was a bad experience (gatlinburg, tn) and made me a little apprehensive however, after receiving my first response from the owners I had a feeling of relief. Once again, top notch cabin and this will now be a yearly trip in this cabin! Highly recommended, book...
