I share this review in full awareness that we're still in a pandemic and many places are short staffed. We stayed at Pickering place and here's my review:
House is in desperate need of an update. Kitchen tiles were broken or cracked Cabinets were very dated Only two burners on the stove worked All cookware was warn and not ideal for a party of 6 Bring Tupperware and extra cutlery Microwave was kind of busted Fridge didn't chill the first night we were there, they brought us ice The bathroom tub would not drain properly One toilet was not bolted to the floor so it moved at the base Bring All condiments including salt and pepper Dip in the floor to the back bedrooms and bathroom was kind of dangerous-you will stub your toes Sheets smelled like straight up bleach Sink wasn't very clean Floors need a shampoo The TV remote doesn't change channels, you have to manually adjust on the cable box Lighter provided for the grill was empty We had to buy our own dish soap, laundry stuff and trash bags Coffee pot is awfully small, had to make 4 pots a day for two people We were so disappointed in the basic equipment provided we didn't bother trying the fireplace They made us wait til 530 to check in, and only cleaned for 30 minutes. Imho that is not nearly enough time for 3 bed 2 bath house. I watched them from the resort restaurant The restaurant was clearly struggling. They screwed up 3 items on our order. Wait times were up to an hour and a half. They served me wine in a dirty glass. Our waitress was quite rude. Checking in was rough because it was just delay after delay, staff was overwhelmed with calls when they should've been taking care of paying customers that were physically present Most staff and patrons either didn't wear a mask or didn't wear it properly The person running the dock was kind of rude when we inquired about our fishing charter Hot tub was gross, looked unfiltered and full of hair Exterior of our house was well maintained but many other resort properties looked rough-peeling paint, missing panels, etc
What was positive? The rooms stayed cool despite the heat wave, and they provided fans The rooms/views were great, I loved the large windows Your in walking distance to the bay, the dock and the pool While the pool was clean and nicely protected from wind, the hot tub wasn't as well cared for You're a short drive to the ferry and the village You are really close to a venue that rents kayaks and bikes Most fishing and whale watching chartes will pick up at their dock Lots of pretty scenery and wildlife around It didn't bother me, but neighbors had chickens, rooster and goats you could hear
Overall it wasn't terrible, we enjoyed our stay and were grateful for many memories made. Just thought for what we paid it was awfully overpriced. I understand the staffing on the islands is difficult, I don't fault them for needing more labor, just sharing how it contributed to an underwhelming experience given the already humble...
Read moreWe were promptly picked up by the shuttle service. He was polite and friendly. Our room had fantastic views of the harbor. What a beautiful site to see waking up.
Our only breakfast we had there in our 3 night stay was an abomination. We order scrambled eggs, and you could clearly see the yokes verses the egg whites, and over cooked. My bloody Mary was to come with a prawn, but they had run out. They gave me an extra piece of bacon with a hair I had to pull off. The bacon was caramelized. My water glass had a giant chunk missing around the rim, that I could have cut my lip on. Not a big deal, nothing happened.
My only issue was with the contemptuous behavior of the bar staff. I get it it's a long holiday weekend. I know it's tough and frustrating, but if you have served me 2 nights in a row prior, I tip you well despite your hostile demeanor, just acknowledge me and my intention to order a basic drink before you go back to the very important conversation you are having with a regular.
I too work in hospitality. We work for tips, not wages, with the booming tourist season, one would think it would be better to actually serve the people standing at the bar with no drink, I guess RUDY, missed that point in customer service. My last night a regular ordered our drinks for us, because Rudy was too busy with nothing to provide us a drink.
Rudy, you need to find a new job, guest service my friend. I was willing to give you my hard earned money in exchange for you doing your job, providing me and my companion a drink in a relatively timely manner. You sir, truly live up to your name.
The dog park on the patio seating. Some of us without dogs would like to eat at the beautiful outdoor seating without having the experience of a dog park. Dog hair was wafting into our food. Dogs snarling and barking while the owner says "it's okay he's friendly".
There is a giant grassy area to be utilized that could specifically to cater to people who have to have their dogs with them at all times. But instead, no.
Our server that night was great, despite how busy she was, she had a wonderful attitude.
The female bartender 4th of July night was great too. I guess her husband works there too, Sam? Awesome people.
All in all, we had a great time.
I want to say thank you to the people who cared. Not so much to the others, I only tipped out of...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed at the Islander over the Christmas holidays. We were meeting Family for Christmas. Check in and parking was easy. Upon entering room am enormous hit in the face of a musty smell? I immediately opened all windows doors and glass sliders, to allow air to flow. I off loaded the car, brought a few food items to be refrigerated. upon opening the refrigerator it was off, of course it was turned down from the control switch inside. I turned the switch mid way, and loaded a few items inside. My Wife and myself decided to sit out on the balcony and sip a glass of wine and take in the view, it was cold but enjoyable since the room had an odor. After a short time I went back to check on the refrigerator and found that it did not work? So I went out to the car and hauled our ice chest up to the room, and off loaded the refrigerator. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to see if the refrigerator was plugged in the electrical socket, so I pulled the fridge out from underneath the counter, I found a GFI receptacle "open" so I reset it and the refrigerator was now working. We went for a walk to the reception desk to ask about a different room to find no one around (they had gone home) restaurant and bar was open. |Later we met with family to have dinner, we had reservations however person seating us said "doesn't matter" We sat in the dinning area and had a reasonable dinner, with great service. Next morning I started the shower to find out that there is no hot water?|I gave the shower opportunity to produce hot water and it never did? I checked faucets in kitchen and bathroom sinks. After my cold shower, I decided to find someone in maintenance, and of course it's Christmas and no one is around. and the resort does not open until afternoon. I went back to the room to have some breakfast, cup of yogurt, and no spoon, guest services left two knifes and two forks.|Wow what a poorly run facility, and the money I spent was not justified....
