Wonderful hospitality, cleanliness, and food service!
The owner Doc and his family, were very welcoming and accommodating! Doc was happy to get us anything we needed. He is personable and we enjoyed many jovial conversations with him.
Breakfast service was very punctual. The food was delicious, varied, and beautifully presented. We were given breakfast early one day as request since we needed to head out before the normal time. Coffee, tea, and snacks were available 24/7. We felt spoiled to be served on the precious China. The local coffee was excellent.
Gluten free alternatives were provided each day as needed and my plate was marked gluten free. The server would also mention it was gf when he dropped off the breakfast tray. That attention to detail gave me a peace of mind.
The grounds are gorgeous! Even with several guests you feel like you have the place to yourself. You feel at home with the friendly dogs and cats walking around. Farther away from the house, you can walk to seen alpacas and horses.
We enjoyed the nature trails and a swim in the pool as well as breakfast outside and in our rooms. I also noticed volleyball nets and badminton equipment, as well as indoor games.
I stayed with my husband in Miss Vashti’s room and my in-laws stayed across the hall in Miss Marci’s room because Doc graciously gave us a complimentary upgrade! We had a private staircase and hall which was incredible to have our own part of the house but also our individual privacy. We also had a mini-fridge and freezer which was very convenient. Window AC units gave us control over the room temperature. The bed was comfortable and I believe it had a feather pillow and bed cover. Housekeeping supplies / towels were offered daily but we declined as we had plenty.
The house is decorated with countless antiques. Every time I looked or walked into a room, I noticed another charming piece of artwork.
The property is a former plantation. Parts of this historic property are over 300 years old! It’s age brings a lot of beauty and charm to the place. It also of course means there are the quirks of an old renovated home. The bedroom doors are only able to lock from inside the room so you may want to keep that in mind. Although it felt very safe. The current owners have redeemed the place to be a place of peace and relaxation. I felt that they honored the history of the previous owners and slaves through recording the history and naming spaces after the slaves and workers.
I would recommend this place to anyone. We made great memories here and hope to return soon!
Visited during Covid: no contact housekeeping supplies, complimentary breakfast delivery to room or outdoors, plenty of space to keep distance. Masks are not required inside since it is considered a residence. We were encourage to do what we were comfortable with in regards to mask wearing. Hand sanitizer...
Read moreWe went to Prospect Hill Inn to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and stayed in The Overseer's Cottage. Everything about our stay was wonderful. We arrived on a Saturday, and stayed until the following Saturday. We were warmly greeted by T and the dogs even though she was juggling a wedding party. After giving us a cookie, and getting us checked in, she gave us a list of recommendations for local restaurants based on previous guest experiences, gave us a quick tour of the property, showed us our cottage, and got us extra towels and wash cloths (she wanted to make sure that we had everything we needed). We woke up early the next morning and walked the short (but beautiful!) nature trail on the property before heading to the main inn for breakfast. We finished our walk and approached the back door to see T standing at the back door offering us coffee since we were a little early for breakfast. She let us know that another guest had lit the fire pit already so we took our coffee to the fire pit. Then, we had breakfast. Oh. My. Goodness. Every single component of every single breakfast was divine. Jim (T's husband) puts a lot of love into every meal he cooks and you can taste it! Each breakfast starts with a latte, juice of your choice, and either a small smoothie or some fruit and yogurt. We had French toast with bacon the first day, and during the week we had breakfast casserole, blueberry pancakes, chicken and waffles, omelettes, and more! Not one repeated meal in 7 days and they were all delicious! The end of each breakfast had a dessert -- key lime tart, blueberry muffin, peach compote with vanilla ice cream, coffee cupcake, pumpkin bar, each one better than the last. After breakfast every day we'd talk to T about our plans for the day and she would tell us about anything she knew about where we were going and what we were doing. On our actual anniversary, we had booked an "Innkeeper's Dinner" at the inn which was a private dining experience with a 5 course meal prepared by Jim and served by T. Again, every course was amazing. They have a set menu for each season (ours was Fall) with several different options for each course. We had let them know a few days in advance what our choices were and Jim did not disappoint! T took pictures for us before dinner, and she did a fabulous job! We brought a bottle of wine that we had gotten from a local winery and they served it with our dinner. When it was finally time to go home after our weeklong stay, we didn't want to leave. T hugged our neck and I almost cried! She and Jim were such gracious and attentive hosts, and I KNOW that they are going to do great things at Prospect Hill. We enjoyed our stay so much and we cannot wait...
Read moreMy husband and I honeymooned at Prospect Hill for 6 days in September 2021 . We had a great time! As we are from Pittsburgh, we had a wonderful experience of "southern hospitality". Doc, the owner of the inn, and his wife make everything so personal! He gave us a quick history lesson and tour of the property, took interest in getting to know us as guests, and remembered the things we told him about days later! He managed any special requests and made our honeymoon so much more laid back, "homey" and relaxing than if we had stayed in an impersonal hotel. And don't even get me started on the food! Doc's wife (forgive me for not knowing her name!) cooked breakfast every morning, and it was delivered right to our door! The best part was... it was always a surprise! We got such a variety of breakfast items, hot and fresh from the kitchen, that we often didn't need a big lunch. We devoured and thoroughly enjoyed each breakfast and I STILL miss them! I tried to recreate the hot baked fruit dish she made but it doesn't compare to Doc's wife :) We only dined in a restaurant 1x during our whole stay. After our day trips to tour historical sites and exhausting hikes in Shenandoah National Park, we preferred to get our food to-go from local restaurants, come back to the plantation and eat on the property during "golden hour". The sun setting through the trees was beautiful! We took many leisurely strolls along the property, enjoyed a cozy bonfire and even treated the horses to a few tasty apples (hope that was OK, Doc!). I played the big piano on the first floor with no complaints from the owners or guests.
I hesitate to even include any critiques, but in the name of transparency I have two:
One is that our veranda was a little unkempt - it was cobwebby with tree debris, but Doc had to lay off so much of his staff in order to stay afloat and now does everything himself. You never see him sitting down! I don't blame him for not having time to sweep off a balcony :) We could have easily done that ourselves.
Second was our mattress was a bit worn out - there were two "tracks" or lanes where guests have slept, and it made for some achiness in our necks and shoulders in the morning. The mattress might just need rotated.
However, these things were easily overlooked by the overall wonderful experience we had! Thanks for making our honeymoon so special - I am so glad we came to Prospect Hill instead of some big-name hotel. My husband and I 100% recommend giving...
