Caverns Country Club Resort — Hotel in Luray

I read a lot of very positive recent posts so decided to make the trip from Bryce resort to try this course.

It’s a challenging layout, and in its heyday was probably excellent. But the summer drought here has really hurt the course. They have done a good job of keeping the fairways and greens in decent shape. But there is no rough ….it’s dead / dormant grass, almost dirt. In addition, most tee boxes are dead grass / dirt. Not in good shape.

I understand dry summers can cause issues with a course, but the deal breaker for me is that the bunkers all seem to be neglected. It seems like they are giving up on maintaining these. Lots of pebbles and rocks, standing water, weeds and crabgrass. I can forgive the dry conditions causing them to focus watering on the fairways and greens, but neglecting bunkers has nothing to do with water conditions. I’m guessing they don’t have the cash flow to add sand and properly maintain the course.

It’s sad to see, it’s clear this course once was a gem. But I would not recommend playing right now due to the below average conditions unless you can always hit fairways and greens in...

The sign at the proshop warned they do not maintain the sand traps. It should have said they stopped maintaining the course at all. The tee boxes hadn’t been mowed in a few days. They played like a moderate shot from the rough. Greens were a mess. Several reviews said they were fast greens. They were fast, when putting over dirt, which was not uncommon on the greens. Putts over grass were extremely slow.

Who would enjoy this course: if you have never played golf before, if you enjoy bee stings, or if you want to gag on gas fumes from the carts.

Some reviews say the views were amazing. The views were nice, but the 7-11 and Walmart nearby have nice views of the mountains as well. Not really a selling point. Save your money...

So... this is not an easy place to play... narrow fairways and really tough greens. I don't mind playing a difficult course, but when you are playing a tough course and the conditions are very poor, it ends up being a frustrating day. Simply put, this place is in the worst shape of any course I have played in the last couple of years. Fairways patchy... bunkers feel like they are part sand / part dirt with small rocks throughout... Tee Boxes in poor shape... Greens are okay. If you live locally - within 30 mins or so - and you want a cheap day out on the course with poor conditions, then okay... but i would not drive over an hour away to play...
