If you are a hiker who wants to spend more time hiking and less time getting to the trailhead, Reds Meadow is the ideal location. Situated close to Devil’s Postpile National Monument, those with lodging reservations are allowed drive to Reds Meadow rather than taking the Park shuttle bus. Hikes into the John Muir and Ansel Adams wilderness areas are close by, and that includes access to the Pacific Crest Trail. Reds is a popular stop off point for PCT hikers to resupply and get a bite to eat at Reds cafe. (Note: Milkshakes are about $12.)||||I’ve stayed at Reds Meadow before because it offers an ideal base to do long day hikes into the Sierra—hikes that many people typically backpack. I prefer to do a 14 mile hike and end up in a comfortable bed rather than carry backpacking equipment! ||||I stayed in one of the A-frame cabins for three nights. The cabin has a loft with two single beds, but as heat rises, it probably is not an ideal option. The upstairs window doesn’t have a screen, which would invite mosquitos and other flying insects. One of the beds is even with the safety railing, which means one wrong rollover or getting out of the bed on the wrong side would cause a person to fall to the floor below. Additionally, the “stairs” are really more of a ladder whose handrail is shaky (as is the upstairs safety rail). I personally would not use the upstairs.||||The downstairs has a separate bedroom that opens to a small deck. The patio doors have a screen but the screen had mouse-size holes and a few other tears. I repaired them with some tape I brought along so that I could get fresh air at night (no air conditioning) without worrying about furry creatures visiting. (There are, however, a few mice in the walls. Not to worry as they don’t have a way to get into the cabin.) The kitchen-living room-dining area is an open space, with a futon that opens to a bed. There is a small dining table and a well-equipped kitchen area. ||||I’ve stayed in one of these A-frame cabins on previous trips. Just like the other cabin I stayed in, this one has the water in the shower plumbed opposite to what it should be. That is, as soon as you turn on the faucet, you get hot water. The other direction gives cold water. It’s easy to get used to, just don’t turn off the water slowly, as closer to off, the hotter the water gets. One gets the impression that a licensed plumber was never hired, as the kitchen faucet was falling off. My partner fixed that with a set of tools we brought. ||||The bed is comfortable and the property is very quiet. I got a good night’s sleep. Despite its quirks, the location will always draw me back to...
Read moreI would give a 1 star but the views compensated for the HORRIBLE customer service. I scheduled a same day pack out trail for the 2 hour for my daughters and I. I scheduled 1 hour before the ride was supposed to start. I called to let them know my gps was saying I’d arrive 9 minutes late. I spoke with Ashley in the front desk and she said she doesn’t think it’s be a problem given the ride before us had a family 20 Minutes late. After speaking with her manager the manager denied us and Ashly told us we can not reschedule nor can we get a refund. That refund are given at 24 hour notice only. Well we scheduled same day so how are we supposed to give a 24 hour notice. My daughter was so upset crying so my husband called back and stated if there was anyway we can reschedule or get a refund. Ashley stated that she didn’t trust my husbands “intensions” and would not reschedule or give a refund. After going back and forth the manager agreed to allows to reschedule. This costing us an additional $600 to stay another 2 nights. But my daughter really wanted to go. I gave my seat to my grandmother (same height, same weight as myself) so she can take the kids. When my grandma arrived they were extremely rude, discriminating against my grandma being handicapped due to knee surgery but was perfect capable of getting onto the horse. They said things like “well you won’t be able to stear the horse”, “your handicapped how are you going to do this trail” and much more horrible things almost causing them to not go again. Finally after again much more going back and forth they aloud them to go on the ride. The ride was great but the customer service and failure to comply with their own rules we will never return again. This was a very expensive trip that we have done for years. In the future we will stick with lake Mary pack out trail rides. Totally disrespectful, rude, telling my husband what Ashley Assumed my husbands “intensions” were, and the discrimination against my grandmothers disabilities were down right wrong! They will not try to scam us or steal...
Read moreWe stayed here for two nights on 8/11-8/12/22 in cabin 1. The cabin is behind the restaurant and attached to cabin 2. There is a front porch and parking in front of the cabin. There is no early (pre 3 pm) check in option.||Being located in the park is great and the staff were awesome, friendly and helpful.||The cabin was the worst place we have ever stayed. The is one electrical outlet in the bath and bedroom area, The is no fridge, fan, coffee maker, clock plastic drinking cups or a chain lock or deadbolt. There were plenty of carpenter ants.||The room (excluding the ants) was clean, the shower head is low 5 ft 5 inches or so but the water pressure is very good. The bathroom is small with no counter space.||The screen (windows front and back) were loose but we did not have any problems with flying bugs. You need to have the windows open to cool the cabin down. The first night it was noisy until 9 pm or so, the second night was quiet right after dark.||The cabin has little sound insulation so you hear your neighbor and the critters running around in the attic and walls||||We ate diner, lunch and breakfast at Red's. The food was good and excluding breakfast, we thought it was fairly priced. You order at tone window and when your name is called pick up your food at another window. You eat at, either the picnic tables around the restaurant, the ground or in your cabin. ||There is a shuttle that stops at Red's every 30 to 45 min. that can bring you to other areas in the park.||Since you are staying in the park you can drive down the road and to various stops avoiding the mandatory shuttle. The ride in and out of the park was a little scary esp. the one lane road sections.||There are A frames at Red's which may be better but we can't...
