This place is everything that is awesome about Terlinga with family. It is deafeningly quiet, totally comfortable, and comes with a bazillion toy rocks to play with. Our family of three stayed in the 20/0 and it is totally comfortable. We were there when it was HOT but this place has an amazing breeze, especially at night, and the A/C rocks! The unit itself is small but the construction is so thoughtful we really never felt cramped. The bathroom is as big as any apartment bathroom and the kitchen had all the storage we needed for cereal breakfasts and evening snacks. The 20/40 is situated for sunrises and the 20/0 is situated for sunsets. The unit has red porch lights so that you can get every bit if the magnificent dessert sky. You can tell that the guy who built this loves the stars and the mountain views. This is a couple miles above the ghost town so you are close to anything going on but also isolated from the noise and light of the community. It is rough going to get up past the ghost town, because Viva Terlinga, but that also means nothing is developed up where you are. Our son had a blast chasing lizards and “building a house” like the ghost town’s old stone houses. He also hunted for fossils (they are everywhere) and had an extended conversation with a quail. The way the houses are situated, it is awesome because you can let the kids have the freedom of exploring but you literally have a mile of visibility and voice connection. Meanwhile, we sat in chairs with wine or coffee and watched him and the critters and the changing colors of the sky. It is a tiny piece of urban comfort in unadulterated dessert. This was seriously one of the easiest Air BNBs ever and you can tell a Terlingua-lover wants to let you slide effortlessly into essence...
Read moreMy recent stay in Terlingua at Fossil Knob Ridge - Chisos House was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, we felt transported to a tranquil oasis where breathtaking views and serene surroundings set the tone for a perfect getaway.
The accommodations were incredibly comfortable and thoughtfully designed, offering everything we needed for a seamless stay. From a well-equipped kitchen to cozy seating areas, it was clear that every detail had been considered to make guests feel at home. Whether we were preparing a quick breakfast or curling up with a book, I never found myself wanting for anything.
If you need to pick up items or groceries during your stay, there are several small stores in the area that offer basic necessities. These shops were convenient and had just enough to ensure I never felt unprepared or inconvenienced.
What truly made this stay unforgettable, however, was the natural beauty that surrounded the property. Waking up to a stunning sunrise painting the desert landscape in hues of pink and gold was an experience I’ll never forget. Each morning felt like a fresh start, a reminder of the peace and rejuvenation the area offers.
Evenings were equally magical. Watching the sun set and the sky transform into a canvas of vibrant colors was the perfect way to wind down after a day of relaxation. The quietness of the desert, paired with these awe-inspiring views, provided the perfect backdrop to reflect, reset, and refresh.
If you're looking for a true escape, this is the place to be. Fossil Knob Ridge offers an authentic experience of nature's beauty, and the accommodations make it even more special. I left feeling completely renewed and can’t...
Read moreGreat way to do Big Bend! Originally planned to tent camp in Chisos Basin but found this far better alternative! This way I still got to cook our meals in Dutch ovens and on open fire grills (no ground fires in the park) but also had a prep area in a kitchen, AC and a shower! No worries about bears either. Perfect mix of “glamping” within a short drive to BBNP for hiking all day. Very cute house (we stayed in Rainbow) with a comfortable bed. It’s thoughtfully designed with a nice porch, fire ring, kitchen/bedroom/bath/sitting area with enormous windows for sunrise views. Each house is oriented so there is plenty of privacy from neighbors (ours were families with small kids but they were courteous and we weren’t bothered by any noise) and either a great sunset or sunrise view. Watch for scorps. We brought a black light flashlight and found a big black one out AWAY from the house. The last night there was a brief but intense storm. Lots of lightening/ thunder and even some hail. Glad we were in a solid structure instead of a tent! The power stayed on but we had been warned that it sometimes goes out. Oh that night’s planned dinner was foiled by forgotten key ingredients (and fatigue from a day of hiking, and we didn’t know it at first but the storm would have ruined dinner outdoor cooking plans anyway) but the property owner had recommended Long Draw Pizza just a few miles away and it was fantastic! Get...
