Beautiful long hike but its worth it. Grayson Highland State Park is a good starting point. At the second gate, you just follow the sign...that says stay on the white blaze to Mount Roger Summit...although the last 0.3 mile to the summit you follow the blue blaze. Otherwise, the trail is easy to follow and then trace your step back to the parking lot. It's took us about 6 hours out and back, but that's because we stopped many times for snacks and...

I'm not a camper (I don't like dirt or bugs) and I'm not a hiker (same), but I can appreciate a beautiful view and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is chock full of scenery. Well managed forests and roadside pullouts and fantastic views of green valleys make my day.

For starters, the area is beautiful. We will definitely be returning. However, the National Park portion of the area that we explored is largely abandoned. The campsites were overgrown. The bathrooms were closed. The "beach" was empty. We enjoyed the emptiness, but were sad to see how it has been so neglected.
