A Sanctuary of Stillness and Light — Lumeria Retreat, Maui” My stay at Lumeria Retreat in the Maui mountains felt like stepping into a space of true alignment — where nature, beauty, and inner peace all meet. From the moment I arrived, the energy was calm and grounded. Check-in was effortless, and Zora greeted me with genuine warmth, offering a thoughtful tour that helped me instantly settle into the rhythm of the retreat. My room overlooked the meditation lawn, elegantly rustic with natural textures and a serene, soulful feel. The four-poster bed invited deep rest, and the spa-like bathroom — with nine-foot ceilings, a pebble floor, and a rain shower — felt like a ritual in mindfulness itself. The grounds are sacred and serene, with outdoor meditation huts and a stone labyrinth for walking meditation and quiet reflection. Later, I joined a yoga and sound healing Crystal Bowl meditation session in the Yoga Shala by Rose, where the soft light, resonant tones, and mountain air seemed to realign every chakra and melt away all tension. Dinner at The Wooden Crate was extraordinary — a perfectly balanced expression of quality, freshness, and flavor, prepared with care and intention. Afterward, I found stillness in the hammocks of the whispering pine forest, then ended the evening beneath the stars in the hot tub, feeling both grounded and expansive. The next morning’s hot breakfast was equally thoughtful and sustaining — fresh island fruit, eggs, and wholesome grains that carried me through the day. Lumeria Retreat is not just a getaway — it’s a journey inward. A place where nature holds space for mindfulness, where body and spirit find balance, and where you leave feeling more centered, open, and alive.

Located just 10 minutes from Paia, Lumeria is nestled in the hills overlooking the ocean. The natural salt pool and hot tub more than make up for the lack of direct water access, but the ocean is just minutes away by car. The property is calming and grounding, and the values of the resort itself are strong. Unlike many go-to Americanized resorts, you will not find televisions on site, and rooms are serviced every other day. There is wifi available and some cell service, but that is limited in some areas as well — that was not a disservice to us and felt like a gentle reminder to disconnect with technology and connect with what is around you. Like the property itself, the rooms were stunning, simple, and comfortable. You can look forward to an impressive selection of daily meditations, yoga, and similar workshops across the property. The interconnected relationship of the mind, body, and spirit is clearly considered in all aspects of this beautiful place. We will absolutely be back.

We stayed 2 nights at Lumeria during our time on Maui and WOW, this place is better than we hoped for! Jim is outstanding!! So accommodating and friendly and full of knowledge about the area and history of Lumeria. The retreat was absolutely breathtaking and all classes, accommodations, and food were superb. We had 4 adults in the double queen courtyard room and although a little tight, it worked perfectly for us. The beds and pillows were the most comfortable we have ever had at any hotel/resort. The location of the retreat was perfect for a start on the Road to Hana and our morning trip to the Haleakala summit to watch the sunrise (this is an absolute must if you’re going to Maui!! Must have park ticket for entry) We would love to return someday and will definitely recommend Lumeria to anyone. Only suggestions would be a 2nd or bigger trash can in the main bedroom, and a full length mirror behind the door : )

TRIGGER WARNING PROFILING POST / DISCRIMINATION

My local friend came to visit me from Oahu and booked us a staycation at Lumeria (I live Haiku, have sent loved ones here to stay because it’s close).

On his second day there, he mentioned that a man (later found out it was manager) came and asked him if he was a guest there/ was checking him out in a discriminatory way. He brushed it off, said he’s used to it (body blasted in tattoos- not that that should be an excuse). I’m thinking hm thats not right but also brushed it off and tried to enjoy our weekend.

A few hours later a woman comes at us, laying by the pool, phone pointed at us as if she’s filming and very angrily says “are you guests here, whats your room number?” we replied yes and then I asked if there’s a problem, before i could even finish asking that she demanded “whats your room number?” So we started looking for the key but pointed at the room in the meantime. Then finally she said “WHATS YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME” so rude and so heated. And my friend told her his name (because were paying guests) And then I said by the way.. who are you? And she responds “I’m the supervisor I have to make sure you’re not breaking into the pool” And i said so thats how you approach us? Paying guests? With absolute disrespect?

She never said aloha, she came at us already expecting that we had broken in and were abusing their pool. She didn’t want to hear a word we had to say DESPITE us dropping $1000 on room/ massages. This is how you treat the people giving you business?

A little more time passes, I’m livid. Now the manager (original profiler) comes down w paperwork in his hand. He said I needed to sign some waivers to be by the pool. I told him the situation. He was apologetic.

We didn’t wind up staying there last night (our second night). Because of how uncomfortable this “healing wellness center” made us feel. To be attacked when you’re trying to find recluse is absolutely unacceptable.

Today we went to get massages, had to check in at reception. The profiler lady was sitting at the front desk and could barely make eye contact with us let alone apologize. Which I i felt we deserve.

The Bigger Picture

How are you going to run a business on stolen land and then treat the people you stole it from as if they don’t belong?

I’m writing this on behalf of my friend, and I want it to be very clear: I will never send another visitor here. I will never give this place another...

I stayed here for 3 nights in February 2025.

Pros: *Gorgeous setting and property *Peaceful vibe *Pool and hot tub are nice *Classes were good *Mattress was comfortable

Cons: *Room was very dusty and dirty upon check-in. I contacted the front desk and they didn't respond. I took photos of the dust on most of the surfaces and of the bathroom but got no response. (hint: do not look under or behind the bed - Yikes) The ceiling fan was on high when I checked in with all the windows closed and was blowing dust all around the room.

*Room air quality was poor due to the dust as well as the large armoire that smelled like it had been recently stained inside the room and never aired out. (They ask you not to open the windows or the door). It was unbearable TBH, I had to open the windows and turn off the fans - and all of my clothes that were in my suitcase smelled like polyurethane for the rest of my 2 week trip. Yay.

*There is no luggage rack and there is one hook in the bathroom. There is no where to hang things or easily access your suitcase, The armoire was not an option for me due to the smell and it had hanging room for shirts or jackets, not dresses or pants.

*Music starts at 8am and stays on for over 12 hours. The volume level is too loud on the lanai to hear birds or read a book.

As some reviewers mentioned - there was a fair amount of moldy cushions on the outdoor furniture.

For the price point in February for a basic room, I expected a clean room upon check-in. The front desk staff was not responsive or accommodating. I had a reservation for 5 nights and checked out after 3. If my room had been clean and the armoire either stained with non-toxic stain or properly aired out - then I would have stayed the 5 nights.

Update: Lumeria responded to my review below and asked me to contact them directly. I did contact them right away and sent them my 2 original emails from Feb and March 2025. I still have yet to hear from them.

I still have yet to hear back from Lumeria months later as they asked me to email them in their response...

We had a high-end retreat booked here for April 2020. Of course, with COVID, that needed to be canceled. At the time, the hotel management offered us a full refund or the ability to reschedule for later in the year. Assuming that the COVID madness would have subsided by Fall, we opted to simply reschedule. As Fall rolled around and Hawai'i extended the quarantine, Lumeria was going to be unable to host our retreat once again, forcing us to cancel/reschedule a 2nd time. At this point, we could not continue to keep our retreat participants in limbo and decided not to reschedule until we were more confident that the retreat would be able to happen. When we called for our refund, we were informed that they would not be refunding us. Of course, we were flabbergasted. After a good deal of back and forth, they agreed to refund us a portion of the fee that we paid to reserve the retreat but would not give us a full refund. We are a very small (2 person) local business. This retreat represented a large portion of our total revenue for the year. The cancellation was devastating. But we are even more appalled by the lack of consideration and professionalism that Lumeria is extending during this difficult time. We feel like it is such a shame that this company is making us PAY for a service they CANNOT provide. It is unconscionable. They are willing to put the $$ toward a future booking, but I have no interest in doing further business with a company that treats it's customers this way. It would be one thing if we canceled out of inconvenience, but the retreat center literally CANNOT host our retreat during the dates we agreed upon, yet WE still have to pay for it. This is such a shame. Please choose to spend your hard-earned dollars at a place that supports local revenue and contributes to the well-being of...
