We stayed 3 nights over Columbus Day Weekend in a 24-foot travel trailer with 3 kids (under 8 yrs old) in sight D1. The park was clean and well maintained for the most part. The sights are well laid out and even though some are close together, there is plenty of room. AT&T and Verizon cell signals are strong 5G, good enough to stream Disney+ on the apple TV on a rainy day. The sight was pretty level. We only had to use one leveling block under the Driver side of the trailer to get it perfect. The dump station is not level, however and canted away from the hook up. We used a couple of blocks when we dumped out. Water pressure was on the low side but not bad. Water was clean and useful.
Though very full, it was very quiet, with one exception... Sunday afternoon was crazy with birthday parties and bbq'ers. D1 is directly across from two large group pavilions and picnic tables. For most of our stay, we had unobstructed view of the lake/river and solitary access to the playground and swings. On Sunday, however, the park filled up and there was a ton of traffic, loud car audio and people everywhere. It was not an issue and we felt safe, just be prepared that activity picked up on this particularly nice Sunday afternoon. Also, if you stay along the main drive between the boat ramp and the entrance, there will be a steady stream of trucks pulling boats just before and around day break. Again, wasn't a bother for us as the AC/Fan drowns most of the squeaky trailer noise. If we had to do it again, we would stay further into the park away from the main road and common areas. The campground has lots of mature trees with many little gray squirrels running about. We did not encounter any other critters aside from centipedes and daddy long leg spiders, which the kids loved messing with. If you park under a tree in the spot, be sure to check the canopy for dead limbs a.k.a "widow makers," and be prepared to be awakened by very large and loud acorns intermittently falling onto your camper... they are loud! But harmless.
All-in-all, we had a blast in the park and spent most of our time there. We will defiantly stay here again. We hiked Pinnacle Mountain via the West Summit trail, nearby. I highly recommend it. Although pretty technical rip-rap at the top, even our 4-year old made it. Also, we drove 20 minutes to North Little Rock to see the Old Mill, which is the only standing structure filmed in "Gone With the Wind." Great quick stop and the kids loved feeding our leftover picnic bread to the ducks. We also checked out the "Big Dam Bridge" and walked to the top. We wished we had brought the bikes as the greenbelt trail there...
Read moreThis place is truly beautiful! The spots are spaced out far apart. It is quiet. You feel like you are in the country but you are only a few short mins from many shops, grocery stores, and entertainment. However, I do not recommend this place for many reasons. One being the infestation of Yellowjackets! I was walking my dogs and we all got attacked. We got stung many times. This should be something they spray for considering it could have easily been a child that was attacked. I get that this can happen anywhere and they can only do so much to control it. But this was literally right behind our camper. Each time we went outside we had to worry about getting stung again. Also, the amount of fire ants! So many mounds of fire ants that will bite you just for walking around in flip flops. Another reason I do not recommend this place is due to the lady who works in the office. She refused to check us in or out during our two week stay because she did not like the discount card we used to book our site on recreation.gov. We purchased an annual America the Beautiful pass for $80 that gives you discounts on certain parks across the country. You can only use this card when booking online. This park only allows you to book online. THE DISCOUNT APPLIED WHEN BOOKING OUR SITE! She sent park rangers to our camper 4 times during our stay. We went to the office at least 4 more times during our stay. All because she said 50% was too much of a discount and she didn't agree with it. We even called customer service and they said it was A VALID DISCOUNT! There was no need to be harassed during our stay. It totally ruined the experience and we will not be back. (Btw, our friend who told us about this card was camping two sites down from us. She did not get spoken to about her card or her discount on the site that she had used MULTIPLE TIMES already this summer.) Anyways, I mainly made this review in the hopes that others would purchase this pass and use it at the park. It pays for itself within one long camping trip and you can use it at Willow Beach as well! Save money and tell the office lady to calm down. It's not like I personally took cash from her...
Read moreWe took our new toyhauler out for the first big trip here. It is a fantastic facility with nice green space and SHADE between and at each site.
Not all sites are super level, so check each site's reviews. Google Earth is also helpful to make sure that you can get your rig into your spot. We backed into ours in under 2 minutes and had it set up and level pretty quickly.
Book your dates as early as possible, as it fills up fast, especially the riverside spots. My husband and Son have tent camped here a few times too.
The bathhouses are clean and the showers have great water pressure. Watching the enormous Tug boats and barges go down the river is fascinating.
You can ride your road bike right out of the gates. Mountain biking is close by, but it is easier to take your vehicle to the trail heads.
Each site has a grill, firepit and concrete picnic table. Some sites even have gazebos!
The peace and gorgeous greenspace is without equal here. There a huge open area with shade trees in the middle of each loop. Our young dog is in heaven with so many squirrels and geese to watch.
Weekdays are mostly retirees. The families come in during the weekends. People tend to watch their kids and keep their pets on leash, which is refreshing. All in all, it is a great park in a beautiful and active area for hiking, cycling, museums...
