Ironically, this lovely property is in a technology center, but don't let that stop you from staying here. The house has lovely trees and grounds, and a trail that goes from the house around the area, and connects to a bike trail. We stayed one night as we were attending a performance at the Mabel Tainter Theater and loved the idea of the original connection to the Tainter family. The bed and breakfast is not trying to preserve the original horse farm lifestyle, but has maintained the beautiful structure's style, woodwork and porches, and updated the upstairs to accommodate four bedrooms with their own bathrooms. ||||We arrived when the owner, Maggie, was out but had told us in advance, and we had detailed entry instructions explaining how to find our room and telling us which parts of the house we were allowed access. There are delightful seating areas all over, including a room with a Keurig and small refrigerator with water, soda choices, and even beer (which made my husband happy), and the beverages are available at all times. Each sitting area had books, comfy seating with pillows and made me want to never leave the downstairs. ||||We climbed the amazing staircase to the second floor (you do need to be able to navigate stairs), and found our room, Trillium. The room is a good size, filled with light from the large windows and decorated with beautiful paintings and warm colors. A dresser and hangers are provided for clothing, a comfy chair for reading. The enclosed bathroom had the toilet and shower, and the sink is just outside the bathroom within the room. I love the fact there is no television in the room, although there is one in the downstairs that guests can use if they desire. ||||Maggie offered us breakfast choices, asked about allergies and let us choose the time we wished to eat. There was freshly ground coffee and donut holes to munch on earlier. This truly was a delightful experience, and I highly recommend it for those who love old style homes with wifi and a...
Read moreOur latest stay at Oak Lawn Inn will be our third time there. My wife and I are Stout graduates (50+ years ago) and always enjoy returning to see grandkids and Menomonie Theater Guild plays. Staying at Oak Lawn Inn had added dimension to our visits because of the significance of the house, its first residents, and the history Stephanie happily shares with her guests. Staying at Oak Lawn is like staying in a living museum.
Rooms are furnished with period beds (with modern mattresses) and furniture, private bathroom with showers. The gold room has a bed and dresser with massive 9' high headboards. Oak Lawn Inn has four guest rooms. The gold room and gray room share an adjoining door for guests with friends. All guest rooms are on the second floor, up a flight of 18 steps, If steps are a problem for you, then this is the one drawback to staying here.
The homey atmosphere encourages guests to relax in the living room or parlor, play games, or read. Stephanie has a library of Stout Tower yearbooks, a great resource for those of us that are Stout graduates.
Small snacks, teas and coffee are available on a self-serve basis. Stephanie's breakfast will keep you going all day: hearty oatmeal with blueberries, raisins, and maple syrup followed by a second course of omelets. Your selection may vary but that is what we have enjoyed.
Summer visitors also have options of walking the grounds, playing croquet, or...
Read moreJust had a fantastic 2 night stay at the Oaklawn Inn. Stephanie, the host was sensational and made the whole process from booking to checkout very personal and smooth. The Inn had been completely redone after Stephanie purchased it from the previous owner. I stayed with a friend, i had the Gray room and my friend stayed in the Peach room. the rooms are very spacious and comfortable and everything is pristine. Stephanie cooks a delicious homemade breakfast each morning. On the first night we stayed there were two other couples occupying the other rooms so we got a chance to chat with them the next morning over breakfast in the dining room. There is a beautiful wrap around porch where you can go outside and relax or sip a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and chat with other guests. On the second night my friend and I were the only guests. The Inn is five minutes from downtown Menomonie, so very close to any activities you might have planned. I would highly recommend staying at the Oaklawn Inn as it gives you a very private, personal experience, so much better than a standard hotel stay. There is complimentary coffee and snacks always available in the dining room. I will stay here again the next time I...
