What a cool old building - and a great re-purposing of it! I booked a room for 1 night on my GAP ride from Pittsburgh to Cumberland. The room was cozy, very clean, with a super comfy bed and several pillows to choose from. Plenty of hot water in the oversized shower, which was greatly appreciated as this was my 3rd day on the trail, and the weather unexpectedly turned cold and rainy. I also appreciated the secured bike storage facility. The website indicated that laundry facilities were available. I spotted a washer and dryer in the storage area, but it was unclear if they were in working order, as there was a bit of 'stuff' piled on top of both. ||That's the good stuff. Here's the not so good, in order: ||1. I emailed the property 4 days prior to my departure to find out if the restaurant on site was open, and where to get my room key on arrival (self check in instructions were included with confirmation of my reservation, and that weekends often include live music in the pub, and 'the building is old so sound sometimes carries, but it usually wraps up by 11 pm, so please be patient'!), and to learn if live music was indeed scheduled. No response. Sent a 2nd email; no response. On the morning of my departure, I received an email requesting my credit card info to secure my reservation. Ok - one additional task to complete while I'm trying to get out the door, but required, so I complied, and included a message indicating that I'd not gotten a response to my inquiry. No further communication from MTC on anything. Ever. |2. As there were apparently no other guests in the entire property, I took the opportunity to look around a bit. The rooms on the upper floor were spacious, well appointed, several included a small refrigerator, and many had private bathrooms. One or two included a large 'sitting room,' that would have been fun had I been traveling with a large group. However, as I was traveling solo, I found the entire experience of staying alone in an old warehouse to be a bit creepy. |3. Upon arrival, I determined that the on site restaurant was not only closed, but appeared to have been for quite some time. Maybe this was a win, as I walked to the diner on the next block, and had an awesome meal for a great price (bowl of chili, cheeseburger, fries, peach pie). Also made sure I was back inside my room well before dark.|4. As I left for the diner, I noticed that the exterior door to the building (for which I had been provided the digital passcode) had been left ajar. By prior guests? By the cleaning crew? By local urban explorers hoping to make their own pot of that wonderful Folgers in the common room? Certainly not something to provide a sense of security to a solo traveler, especially given the Welcome letter in my room suggested dialing 911 if something was wrong! |5. The common room on the 2nd floor reminded me of off campus college housing: a worn out, uncomfortable couch, and some unidentifiable odor. Thanks for providing a coffee maker, jug of spring water, and coffee. I should have walked to Sheetz instead for my morning cup. ||A comfy bed, plentiful hot water, and cozy room would normally get a 4 or 5 star review from me. However, due to lack of services, amenities, building security, and non existent communication, my experience was more of a 2 star one. I got a $50/night experience, but paid just over $100. ||Traveling solo, or want a true BnB experience? Go elsewhere. |Traveling with a group, don't mind making your own coffee, going out for breakfast , and 'enjoying' self check in, and sketchy security? - this place might work for you. ||For context: I met 2 other women on the trail the next day, also riding the GAP trail to Cumberland. They stayed at an inn very close to the trail, for a very similar price. They got a ride to a great restaurant the previous night after their hosts made reservations for them, complimentary beer and wine when the arrived at the inn, and...
Read moreI love to find unique places and this fit the bill. |Myersdale is a small town on the Gap.|The place originally built as a tool shop and a morgue. It was purchased and made into a popular bar/restaurant hotel. It was again purchased and is undergoing renovation. That being said. The restraunt was not functional. and there was a lot of construction stuff around. The check in was a little confusing, as there is no staff on site. There was a bad smell in the hallways. And carpets was a little gross in hallways. Once I figured things out a bit I was good. In the evening I was the single only person in the building. That was a little creepy but I’m ok with creepy. |The power went out in my room that evening and could locate no one. I called the hotel number and got a vm and the mailbox was full. I texted as well and got no response. I was able to find a powerstrip to plug in a lamp. I did come across someone later who did t work there but knew the owner and made a call and it was fixed. |Is this Hotel haunted? Some say yes. I had no experiences. There is a paranormal report on google that states a medium did experience some connections nothing dark. |The rooms were really cool, clean, exposed brick, air and heat. None of my bedside lamps worked. |I see this location as more like a hostel then a hotel and it has so much potential and I hope they get it up and going. All this being said. I’m pretty flexible but if you are looking for a standard hotel stay, this may not be the place for you. If you are open to the unique and strange you will enjoy. For me the worst part was the smell on the 2nd floor. I would say it is a little overpriced at this time. It if they get it renovated and business picks up it would...
Read moreWe had just finished riding 50 miles enroute to DC. This place came highly recommended. We thought we would give it a try. We waited to be seated about 10-15 minutes. We ended up being seated at the same time as another group who had just arrived. After another wait, the other table received their drinks and had their orders taken. The kicker was when the waitress apologized for their having to wait for service. Needless to say, we didn't stick around. I truly wish this team much success, as I realize we were tired and hungry and did not want to wait. The lady who recommended the restaurant gave me the history of the building and how they acquired the building in the hopes of rejouvenating the city. I hope they learn to communicate better and keep an eye on the front of the...
