If I could give this campground zero stars I would. Extremely small sites stacked on top of each other. No views unless you care to stare at the camper next to you. No room to even walk in between sites when you use table provided. Fire ring was a joke, no one wants to sit at the end of the gravel and enjoy a fire, it's like having a tiny fire at the end of your driveway, looking at other people. Unfriendly campers, mostly all older folks which is typically great except when you get the not so lovely mean type as neighbors. Pond was less than stellar. Slow internet which was the only reason we stayed here as being in school doesn't stop for some when out on the road. First time staying and will absolutely look for something else as I wanted to stay close to my daughter who was at camp. Large standard poodle who roamed the grounds and bothered our peace. Tags on the dog, but obviously leash policy doesn't apply to everyone in this campground. Absolutely nothing to do here. Laundry looked as if it were in a shed. We have camped all over North Carolina over the course of years and this was mind blowing when we pulled up. Never again. We contemplated leaving before checking in, because it was so awful looking but no one else in the area had internet and openings. Hindsight, we should have just used out data plan from our provider went elsewhere. absolutely zero shade, and the row of campers in the back with high grass is a snake pit it seems. Our first neighbors were fantastic and then, bring on the grumpy grumpier old men. Quality overy quantity should be the moto, but obviously not everyone thinks so. Had to level the gravel upon arrival as well so the other reviews of lovely level sites is not accurate. Spend your money elsewhere and enjoy yourself, unless watching strangers is your thing, this is the place for you! Didn't even attempt to go to the bathhouse, gross. Take a que from the campgrounds around you, saving money isn't worth it. You get what...
Read moreMy only experience with Mayberry Campground is far from a positive one. We are so sad and disappointed in what we had hoped would be a fun and happy time in Mt Airy. We live five hours from Mt Airy but decided to make a weekend of it when we heard that a 95th Birthday Luncheon was to be held for Betty Lynn on Saturday, August 28th. We bought our tickets to the luncheon and made reservations for one night at Mayberry Campground. Their policy is a two week notification of cancellation for a refund. We were notified on the afternoon of August 17th that this luncheon was cancelled due to Miss Lynn’s health. We were issued a refund to that event. While very disappointed, we certainly understood and wish her well. We called the Campground the following day to explain what had happened and that we would not be driving five hours as our event had been canceled. There was no way of our knowing two weeks in advance. The campground informed us that they would “file our payment for a future visit” but would not issue a refund…of $38! We explained that because of the distance we may never come to Mayberry but they offered no mercy. This was for one night, the circumstances were beyond our control, and when we asked if they were full or if we prevented someone else from staying because of our having to cancel they informed us that no, they were not full but “it is their policy”. This is not like the Mayberry portrayed on TV and we really no longer have a desire to ever stay at this campground. The lesson we learned is that nothing is as it appears and we are just sad that this is the memory we now have of Mayberry Campground…over $38. 😔 Sadly, the business manager also told us that Betty Lynn’s Birthday Luncheon “was not a major event” when it...
Read moreWe were at site 108 our first visit, and this happened to be THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SPOT - spacious, up on a hill, winds whipping our camper,... Gorgeous! Even though it was close to I-74, we found the whirring of the cars somewhat soothing, certainly not disturbing. We did not have cable access at this location of the campground, but that was fine with us! My only complaint was that someone in our vicinity refused to pick up after their dog, and of course, I stepped all in it. That's not the owners' fault at all, but I share this aspect as a good-will message to all camping pet owners: be responsible and courteous toward other campers by monitoring your fur baby and cleaning up after them.
We'll return to Mayberry! The grounds are extremely well-kept, and the crowd was friendly.
11/28/23: We have just returned from our second stay at Mayberry. Still beautiful, but sadly, the owners have allowed a vehicle/trailer/storage building to be parked at the foot of the attractive hill, creating an unsightly eye-sore... so close to the pond, it certainly is a shame. Still no internet/cable at the top of the hill. Once the grounds fill up, wifi is shotty and unreliable. Lastly, another camper was caught walking her dog but would not pick up after him.
I'd love to see camper and vehicle storage restricted to one area and kept out of view. Perhaps a wall of trees or tall shrubs separating the storage area from the campground? Nothing should take away from the well-kept lots and attractive...
