I recently stayed at this "cabin," though calling it a cabin might be a bit of a stretch—it’s more accurately described as an extended closet with a clean and efficient design. The accommodations are modern and thoughtfully laid out, but they’re best suited for one person or, at most, two adults. This is definitely not a space for more than two people, especially if you're bringing pets or children.
To start on a positive note, the description provided by the host was accurate—nothing stated in the listing was incorrect. However, the key issue lies in what wasn’t mentioned. Specifically, there is no TV, no microwave, no freezer, and no sink in the bathroom. The only sink is in the kitchen, which means brushing your teeth happens in the same spot where you prepare food. While this setup might work for some, it’s important for future guests to be aware of these limitations.
Another notable omission was the lack of cleaning supplies. There were no cleaning products provided, which made it impossible to properly clean the sink after brushing our teeth and before preparing food—unless you thought to bring your own cleaning supplies. There was one sponge but no other basics like disinfectant or dish soap. Additionally, there wasn’t an excess of paper towels or toilet paper, so if we had stayed for the full length of our visit, we would have needed to purchase more ourselves. These are small but significant details that should be added to the "not included" list in the description.
Admittedly, I should have read the listing more carefully before booking. Still, I feel it’s worth emphasizing that this space is one step up from camping. Had I understood that, I wouldn’t have booked it. I arrived with my adult daughter, my 12-year-old grandson, and two dogs (a Basset Hound and a Miniature Dachshund). The space was so small and cramped that the only seating options inside were the bed and the dining table. Unfortunately, due to rainy weather and a dirt-covered campground area, we couldn’t utilize the outdoor picnic table.
One saving grace was the reliable WiFi. Without it, we would have struggled even more to stay entertained, given the lack of a TV. Adding a small, wall-mounted, WiFi-enabled flatscreen would go a long way in making the space more enjoyable for guests, especially during bad weather.
Regrettably, we left two nights into our planned four-night stay because the accommodations were just too tight for our group. On top of that, we all experienced terrible allergies during our time there, which may or may not have been due to the small, pet-friendly space.
To help future guests better evaluate whether this space is right for them, I strongly recommend the host update the listing to include:
The square footage of the space. A clear recommendation that it accommodates two people MAX. A specific list of what is not included (e.g., no TV, no microwave, no freezer, no bathroom sink, no cleaning products, minimal paper towels and toilet paper).
Overall, while this space might be a great fit for a solo traveler or a couple looking for a minimalist getaway, it’s not ideal for small families, or anyone seeking more than basic accommodations. I take full responsibility for not understanding the listing more thoroughly, but I hope this review helps others make an...
Read moreMy partner and I recently had the pleasure of staying at one of Getaway’s tiny cabins in Gilchrist Springs, and it was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in a world of thoughtful touches and comforts that truly set this experience apart.
The cabin itself is a marvel of efficiency and charm. The inclusion of essentials like firewood, s’mores kits, and fire starters added a delightful rustic touch, perfect for cozy evenings. The Adirondack chairs provided a comfortable spot to soak in the natural surroundings. What's more, the cabin came equipped with a first aid kit, magnetic cooking supplies so nothing gets lost, a handy lantern, and even a speaker, ensuring that every need was catered to.
One of the standout features was the thoughtfully curated reading material, including a book from Jon Staff, the founder of Getaway, which offers insights into the essence of such retreats. The welcome paper, suggesting a variety of fun activities, was a nice touch, ensuring we never ran out of things to do.
As a gay couple, we sometimes worry about safety, especially in more remote locations. Our concerns were quickly dispelled here. Not only did we feel completely safe and welcome, but we were also heartened to see other gay couples enjoying their stays. The diversity reflected in the cabin names and the inclusivity of the space was commendable.
The cabin grounds struck a perfect balance between wild beauty and meticulous maintenance. Knowing that the helpful staff was onsite yet unobtrusively hidden away provided an extra layer of comfort, knowing help was available if needed. The attention to detail extended to the provision of a first aid kit, and the inclusion of delicious tea and pour-over coffee was a delightful surprise.
Our stay at Getaway’s cabin was an unforgettable experience, and we are already planning our return. The sense of seclusion, coupled with the thoughtful amenities and inclusive atmosphere, made this a perfect escape. For those considering a visit, I highly recommend checking the Getaway website for potential deals and packages – they make this idyllic retreat...
Read moreI've seen this "hotel" / glamping concept in other parts of the USA and always wanted to try it out. When I saw they opened a location in Florida... we HAD to go!
We found a time when the price was a less busy time, $149/ night and booked in. The website makes it somehow feel so mysterious into what you are getting yourself into. I think that's mostly due to this concept being so different than a typical hotel.. glamping, camping, set up.
So what is it??? I would say glamping fits my own definition best. This location is about 30 minutes outside of Gainsville, FL. It's far enough away from "everything" that you feel like you're in a remote area. But the set up of the cabins and driveway feel luxurious enough to feel like you've booked into a fancy hotel with a theme.
I've read the creator's (Jon Staff) book (that they have in the cabins) and I really love and appreciate this concept. If you're interested, I would do a quick google search to read more about it all.
Our weekend is exactly what I needed out of this place. Rest, recharge, appreciate nature, quiet, reduce distractions, explore... and on and on.The cabin (as they call them) has everything you could really need. I LOVE the campfire box, ready with wood, fire starters, a grill, and some smores materials!!! Even if you aren't familiar with making a camp fire.. they have all the tools you could need.
I cannot recommend this place enough. Their attention to detail was beyond what I can explain. The ease of getting there, setting things up.. and being able to jump right into relaxing.. is something you can't get out of most "hotels".
Nearby is Paynes Prairie (hiking trails, wild horses and bison), High Springs (hiking trails, springs, downtown High Springs- very cute).. and Gainsville isn't too far.
