My experience here was phenomenal, especially for a hostel. I was looking for a cheap but safe stay to visit Yosemite from, and this fit the bill perfectly. The entire place had a really quaint but cozy charm to it, you can tell a lot of love went into making this place what it is. The "caretaker" of the hostel, whose name is escaping me, was incredibly friendly and helpful, promptly answering any questions I had and helping me with anything I needed.
I met so many people here from all across the world, it was really wonderful to be a part of such an ephemeral yet caring community of people, even if it was only for a few nights. The other guests were always courteous and kind, because the type of people who book through a hostel understand that it's a "we're all in this together" mindset; we all have to take care of each other.
I stayed in the co-ed dorm on the second floor. The bed was reasonably comfortable, I certainly don't have any complaints. The hostel could get quite hot at times and at night if the windows were opened during the day or not opened at night, but the nights where that scheme was followed it was reasonably comfortable. The owners do plan on installing central heating and cooling at some point!
The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you might need to make your own food. I personally did not take advantage of this simply because my trip was too short and I tend to cook in large batches, but if I had been staying longer I definitely would have. The town of North Fork in which the Jackass Hostel resides in does have a limited number of dining options if you don't want to cook for yourself (shoutout to North Fork American BBQ). The town of Oakhurst is also only a 30min drive away and has many more dining options there (shoutout to South Gate Brewing Company).
I would 100% stay here again if I were coming out to Yosemite. I know the hostel experience can be a bit intimidating to those who haven't tried it before, but honestly I had a better time here than I would have sitting alone in some boring hotel room somewhere. At Jackass, you feel like you're in a home...
Read moreA great location and deal if you're planning on visiting Yosemite, Sequoia National Park or any of the other local parks. Yosemite Valley is about an hour drive away if there's no traffic. Sequoia was about 1.5 hours away. Super home like space and comfortable beds. All the guests there were friendly when I stayed and we quickly became good friends meeting for exchanging our travel stories at the end of the day. The outdoor cat there was also so cute and hung out on the picnic table in the front a lot. I purchased food at the grocery store near Fresno before driving up here so got a better deal and selection than what the limited local stores had to offer. I recommend that if you can. The pizza place nearby was very good though.
There is no AC so a stay during cooler or not as hot months is better. There are several fans but still AC is AC. I stayed the beginning of June and it was fine. There are also no lockers for storage so leave your things in your car if you want. I left my clothes in my luggage next to my bed and didn't have any problems. There are also no shades on the windows, which I guess helps you get up early! But it would be nice to have shades to sleep in a...
Read moreOur stay at the hostel was very pleasant. The host was very nice and greeted us upon arrival, then showed us around to our bunk and amenities available. WiFi was free to use, along with access to Netflix, Amazon Video, and HBO Now. A full kitchen with spices, cookware, and a good selection of accoutrements was available for use by guests. Lots of literature for exploring Yosemite National Park was available to look at on the living room table, along with the host being more than happy to answer any questions we had about the area. The bathroom was newly remodeled with very nice slate tile on the floor and in the shower. The beds were standard cot/ bunk beds you would expect at a hostel experience. The host has a new puppy in the process of being trained who was very friendly and fun to play with. Overall a...
