I just visited the UP for the first time ever and we chose to stay here while visiting. We mainly chose it because it was a bit cheaper than its competitors and they are pet friendly were as other places didn't seem to be. At first glance it doesn't look that nice, but once you get inside there is some nice decor. Anyway, we had rented the two bedroom suite upstairs. They claimed it was a modern suite with a kitchen, but it wasn't. The beds felt like they were at least 20 years old and the rest of the furniture was outdated as well. The kitchen was merely a bathroom refurbished with a mini fridge and a microwave and a sink. The bathroom was cramped, and shower barely big enough to turn around and it wasn't very tall. Also it would've been nice to have the TV in the bedroom, but that's neither here or there. One of things we really noticed as well was the plumbing. The toilet was really slow to flush (also started to clog) and the sink was slow to drain. Also it took awhile for the water to heat up. Our relatives down in the suite had the same issue. The other issue was service. Towels didn't always get changed for us and they never went to the downstairs suite (3 bed 2 bath) to replace them the whole time the rest of our family had it booked. We had to ask repeatedly. There furniture was also outdated. I couldn't stand sitting on the couches as there was no support. Also they never had there trash taken out, we had to do it ourselves (they told us to). Also the WiFi was pretty spotty at best (I didn't mind but the rest of the family did). Moving on, the family there was nice. Always greeting us and our dog. They do have a game room, but the only working thing is the foosball table. Arcade machines were off and the pool table they sent in for repairs was never given back to them. The beach was really nice as well and they pulled out picnic tables and gathered wood off the beach so you could have a fire while there. Also you could check out kayaks and a canoe for no extra charge. You just need to fill out a form and leave a valid drivers license. There was free popcorn in the lobby as will as instant oatmeal for...
Read moreWe stayed in the Log Home in early October. It is not on the Inn property, but is about a 5 minute drive away along the shore. It is quite private and the beach area is beautiful.
The cabin itself is fine but quite dark - maybe it would help with the summer sun angle - and needs updating of at least carpet and furniture. The kitchen is nice. A major problem for us was that there was No Wifi and I didn't have cell service here either. Yes, one could say it is good to be disconnected, but the website stated that wifi was available and I assumed log home was included. Wrong assumption. This caused issues with needing to stay in touch with family. The cable tv worked fine.
I looked forward to a cozy fire and there was wood provided, but there is a very unattractive insert in the fireplace. The window in the insert is small, blackened, and cracked. It really ruined the cozy fire experience that I was hoping for.
Walking on beach was nice. Found some pretty beach glass pebbles and agates and saw a few beautiful sunsets. Watch out for the step in the wood walkway coming back. It's not evident on the way back, especially in dim light, and would be safer with a reflective strip.
It sounds like the Inn experience is preferable to the log home, but we were concerned about covid because of a high-risk pulmonary lymphoma condition and wanted to reduce exposure. It was quite worrisome upon check-in (no-contact was not offered) that the owner had a mask only over his mouth, not over his nose, and even that kept slipping down. Also, when I asked about wifi, I was told that we could come sit in their small lobby with a laptop where people are walking through. This didn't seem to be taking the severity of the covid pandemic seriously enough. We did end up sitting in our car using the wifi in the parking lot when we needed to check on family matters and were glad that was available.
The log home might be better for a summer beach vacation if you aren't concerned about...
Read moreJust book your stay, already! We had a FANTASTIC 3 night stay in the Chickadee cabin. I can't recommend Scott's enough.
First, Josh who checked us in was great - he told us about all the hiking spots we should check out in the Porcupine Mountains and was so friendly. He even brought an AC to our cabin because it was over 90 degrees (very unusual for the area, he said).
Second, the LOCATION! Wow. We were just steps from the lake, which we took advantage of every day. The beach is quiet, private, and feels cozy. We loved that we had access to kayaks and a canoe for free. We also made a bonfire on the beach every night and stargazed when it was clear - so gorgeous, one of our favorite memories. If you're a fan of hiking or nature in general, Scott's is a great home base to explore from. We hiked the Presque Isle Scenic Area, Lake of the Clouds, and other areas, all of which were less than an hour from the cabin. Ontonagon is a quaint little town with a few shops and restaurants. Check out Syl's!
Third, the cabin itself. Totally new, the inside was pristine and had all the amenities we needed in a compact space. From the sitting area on the front porch to the fire pit/charcoal grill out back and comfy bed and thoughtful decor, the cabin was perfectly set up. One thing to note about the kitchen area is that the fridge is small, so don't plan on doing a big grocery run! Luckily, Pat's IGA is just down the road, so we stopped there every day to pick up dinner ingredients. Having a dishwasher is a huge plus if you plan on cooking during your stay.
Overall, it's one of our favorite places we've ever stayed and we can't wait...
