The campsite was ok. Tall grass which I don't understand why they don't mow it. The fire pit was extremely close the the tall grass so we were worried the whole time that it was going to start the grass on fire. The best thing about the stay was going on the hike and seeing the deer and birds. Also being able to watch deer's come into the campsite and walk down the gravel road. The kids wanted to go swimming, so took them to the beach but we didn't swim much cause of the moss in the lake. You walk into the lake and the moss would wrap around your ankles. SO we took them to Lake Farley instead to swim. We had a lady staying with us who has medical conditions and needed the generator. The main person at the office said it was ok, so the lady staying with us confirmed with other campers and they were all ok with it. Other staff members came over and made us shut it off and this caused her to have to leave early. They had amazing bathrooms that were handicap accessible but where we were staying they was a ways a way. MY mom was in a wheel chair and we told them and they booked us farther from the bathroom. The porta potties wasn't handicap accessible and one of the staff sat there and watched me and my brother struggle trying to get my mom in the porta potty without willing to help. For this being a state park we were very surprised when we couldn't find a park for the kids so we had to find other ways to entertain them. i will not stay here again unless i am desperate to stay some where and this is the...
Read moreBig Stone Lake park is a nice place to spend a weekend, with beautiful views across the lake. Many people come here to fish, so expect to see a number of boats in the campground and close to the shore throughout the day.
Our campsites were on the Lake shore and it was lovely, with surprisingly few bugs. There is not a ton of hiking here, or biking here. That said, there are some nice nature walks of shorter duration. Facilities were decent, and clean . For those interested in birds, there are supposedly 200 different species in this area. We found the sheer number of different bird callst to be pretty amazing and heard quite a few we didn't know.
Tent sites on the Lake are a bit small and several slope towards the lake. We didn't have any issues, though, fitting three tents across two camp sites. Cell service was in the one to two bar region between the two major carriers we use - so it made being off the grid a little easier.
The nearby town of Ortonville is nice and I can definitely recommend Berkner's pizza, as well as the coffee shop/cafe/gift shop...
Read moreNot great for a family or hiking. We went to just get away and there are only 2 hiking trails each a mile long. One bathroom for two campgrounds. The drinking water was slightly brown. No staff the day we arrived (4pm) so we couldn't buy firewood. Bugs are terrible. Kids got bored pretty quick. Swimming beach had alot of people fishing so not much room for kids. This is a great place for those who want to fish. Lots of great fishing going on. But lots of people including the host were cleaning fish at their campsites, bringing in lots of flies. Not kid friendly. No playground or places for kids to explore. The dump station needs up grading. This campground feels like the State...
