Horrible experience!!! Most staff is so rude and unprofessional!! First, while checking in we were informed that the sites we had reserved were not full hook-up like requested and verified. After being told that the employee that had taken our reservations was terminated due to too many mistakes being made, the manager thought it was not in the campgrounds best interest to try and make the mistake right. A slight refund, a free bundle of wood... anything. After about 20 mins of back and forth (with him and another employee who was in fact very nice, but I forgot her name), he did give a slight discount to try and make it right. He did, however, repeat to tell me how when mistakes are made, refunds are NEVER given, and this is his first discount that he has ever approved.
Next, I took my daughter horseback riding. It was both of our first times. When we were getting into the saddle, my horse was acting very funny and timid. When expressing how I was not comfortable on that particular horse (mind you, they had about 20 other horses that were saddled up and ready to go), they assured me I would be fine. We made our way down the trail a bit and the horse I was on, Lucky was his name, was apparently not feeling it. Pulling his head, stomping his feet, not being cooperative at all. I expressed to the guide, Cody, that I was not comfortable with this, and wished to get off the horse. I was in full blown panic attack (I suffer from anxiety), but did not let that through because I did not want to freak my daughter out. Now, the ride had just started, we had been on for about 5-7 mins, and he was the rudest that I think anyone has ever been to me. Yelling at me, telling me that I was not allowed to get off the horse - that this is the experience I had paid for, that I was ruining everyone else's time... among other things! I was keeping totally calm and just repeating to him that I was not feeling safe, and that I wished to get off the horse. When he finally called someone to help me, a very nice gentleman by the name of Bob, took me and reassured me that it was fine. After thanking him for being so understanding, Cody continued to make comments about the situation. Telling me not to look at him and that I better not expect a refund. Please keep in mind, that this was all happening in front of my 9 year old daughter. We were with another group of friends, who were also horseback riding, and while Bob helped me back to the barn my daughter stayed with my friend and continued on the ride. My daughter came back and explained that she had a nice time with the horse, but was sad because the trail guide Cody, did nothing but talk about me to the group and to her personally. About how my "episode" would cost everyone their experience, and that they would now not have enough time to do the whole ride (the "episode" took about 3-4 mins). I have never been so disappointed and taken back by a support staff's behavior; especially when someone's life and the life of an animal are involved. Bob, was amazing and assured me that this was not the first time this has happened, and that it was best for me to request to get off 1) when I did before the ride was too far in, and 2) that if a person is in the middle of a panic attack, the horse is going to sense that - and that is not good.
I do hope that the employees that treated myself and my family so terrible are talked to and reprimanded. Please don't get me wrong, there were some staff that we came into contact with (thank you Bob) that were pleasant and kind,...
Read moreCamped there last weekend. Some like the word Rustic to describe campgrounds, others prefer outdated. I’ve tried a lot of smaller campgrounds in MI and Double R really is expensive for the amenities offered. The service staff is just ok, but not spectacular or anything. They only allow 2 ppl per site and it’s $5 more per person per day. (Most other places just charge per site and have a max of 6 ppl allowed) They’ve got a pool that was fairly clean, but no chaise lounges, tables, nor chairs provided. The men’s bathroom by the pool doesn’t have locks on the bathroom stalls nor shower stalls so you gotta hold the door shut when using the toilet. It was decently clean at least during the morning hours. The newer bathroom is nice though. Wood is $8/bundle, and you’ve gotta load yourself whereas every other place I’ve been they deliver it to your site. The wood has been fairly wet both times we stayed here, so I just bring extra charcoal and lighter fluid and start fires each night using a vessel and charcoal that I add to the pit first. The sites are ok but not large by any means. (standard hole in the ground outlined by rocks fire pits) The roads/paths are in rough shape and are not paved. The restaurant offers a nice selection but still was kinda pricy compared to most campgrounds. Pizza averaged around $18 for roughly a 14” and was a thin crust style. Nothing to write home to mom about though. Ice cream was good and is a good value. I didn’t feel like I really got a great value out of our stay, but the kids had fun. They should offer discounts on things like golf/tubing/food to guests and it would be better. Most places my family stays offer free ice cream socials, DJ dance parties, free activities for kids, Poker runs, fishing tournaments, corn hole tournaments, waterparks, golf cart rentals, mini golf, foam parties, etc every weekend. Adding anything like this would make the experience more enjoyable for campers. Between the site, wood, ice, and food bought at their store (pizza and ice cream) I spent roughly $450 for a 3 night stay on a tent site. I spend $490 for a 4 night stay at Adventurebound in Whitecloud which includes a gas powered golf cart to get around, very nice Waterpark with 2 pools, full lake and beach, a site twice the size of Double R’s, better fire pits, and 14” pizzas are $8 for a full breakfast pizza, and $10 for a regular pizza. Plus they brew coffee for guests. So it’s hard to say you get much value out of your stay at Double R. 2 and a half stars is what I would rate the campground/experience. Not memorable, but not terrible...
Read moreMy daughter and I went horseback riding a few days ago. When I called to set up our trail ride, I was informed that because my daughter 5 years old, she would have to ride by herself (normally we ride double-back). I expressed my concerns with this, as she has never ridden by herself before. They said there was nothing they could do, and that she would have to ride by herself. I was not given an option. After debating this over and over again, and talking with my daughter about it, we decided to go anyway. She was so excited and loves horses. When we got there, I expressed my concerns three separate times again, and was informed each time that she would have to ride by herself. When they put her on her own horse, I asked one of the volunteers to please put her with me, because I was feeling very uncomfortable about the situation. He specifically said, "are you being paranoid? Look, I would put my own two-year old granddaughter on this horse. She is very good with kids, I PROMISE she will be OK." So, I trusted him and we went about the ride. About two minutes into the ride, my daughters horse suddenly stopped out of nowhere, and began rearing its head. After another minute, it took off running in the complete opposite direction that all the other horses were walking. The guide went after her, and I got my horse into a run after her also. They DIDN'T EVEN OFFER HELMETS!! The whole time the horse was running, I kept visualizing my daughter going flying off and suffering a serious head injury, or even being trampled on. We are so blessed she was able to hold on the whole time and never fell off. She could've been seriously hurt, and by THEIR neglect in my concerns. I will never be going back here again, and I will share my experience with everyone possible. This was so wrong on so many levels. They did not even offer me a refund. I still paid full price. Riding a horse by yourself should NEVER be determined by age, but instead by experience. I voiced my concerns several times, got blown off, and my daughter's life was put in jeopardy because of it! This should've never happened. Please be aware of this place and their unlawful rules. May my experience with this raise awareness to others who may someday be put in the...
