The tour of the canyon was, as many others have said, truly phenomenal. The rock formations will take your breath away, in many places. Stunning.
Our guide, Dylan (sp?) was friendly, knowledgeable, and took a number of great pictures for us (of us!) in the canyon. He is also their main welder, who has been upgrading the ladders along the way to make things safer. We felt like we were in good hands.
However.... The PROCESS of "checking in," and knowing that we were in the right place, has some room for improvement. Here's what you should know....
We booked online. We arrived on time, at the address provided. We found.... a closed gate, no person, and signs saying "Yes, we're open!". There was also a tattered paper sign on a chair, that said "Drive half a mile down the dirt road, and close the gate behind you ..." With some trepidation, off we went.
We arrived at a parking area, a trailer, a whiteboard, and.... No person. We were early, so we waited and hoped for the best. About 10 minutes later, Dylan came cruising up, explained that he would be our guide, so we hopped in! (I did offer them the feedback that they needed to work on their "customer communications...")
He took us through the desert for about 15 minutes, and we set off on foot through the canyon. BE ADVISED that this is a HIKE. You will have to do some climbing, and there will be a few challenging spots. You need to be in at least "average physical condition.". If you have breathing difficulties or physical limitations, this may be more difficult than you bargained for. (My wife is not in "great shape," and she made it. She loved what she saw, but this really pushed her limits...)
With that in mind, if you can take this tour, you will not be sorry. From what I can tell, they cater to smaller groups (it was just the 2 of us on this one) and the experience really is worth the effort. These are magnificent...
Read moreYou want to go with this company! What an incredibly intimate and special experience! I feel so incredibly fortunate that I chose this tour company.
From checking out the different websites, I could just tell that while I’m sure the others are good, this one would be different, unique. That’s exactly what it was from start to finish, and I’ll explain why.
I called the night before at 8:30pm because I couldn’t book online being that it was just me. Rose Ann, the owner answered, and not only did she get me on the tour the next day, but she ended up spending 30 mins on the phone with me talking about the rest of my road trip plans, and giving me some really helpful pointers and suggestions as I was heading deep into Navajo land the next day.
Then on the actual tour, Leevander (our amazing guide), and a really kind couple and I (only 4 of us!) got to experience a slot canyon all by ourselves. How it works is that each company has their own portion of the canyon to share. After driving by the other companies on my way out to their property, I passed by parking lots with 30-50 cars. To imagine sharing that incredible place with hundreds of other people… that’s not what I was looking for.
Leevander shared about the history of the canyon and many Navajo stories that tied into what we were seeing (& feeling). It lead to some very powerful conversations about how this canyon, and Navajo cuties have some beautiful lessons to teach all of us, if we can open our body, mind and heart to hear them.
This was one of the most special moments of my life. I feel changed because of it. And that is all because of what Rose Ann & Lester have built, and the purity of the message that Leevander gifted to us. Thank you my new friends! I can guarantee that if life gives me a chance to experience this again, it will...
Read moreI cannot recommend this tour enough! I know everyone says this but... pictures are just not sufficient and neither are words. So here is my best attempt. Glorious patterns of lines and swirls carved from the wind and rain encompass the world in this bright orange canyon. You are reminded just how small and insignificant you are compared to nature’s immense power. Every turn has a new design, every rock glows in a glorious orangish-red color that seems to have been intentionally sculpted by a higher being. This place makes you see god. The coolest part of this experience was just how personal it was, we didn’t have tour guides rushing us from place to place, we didn’t have hoards of people cramming through tiny spots and pushing each other out of the way to get the perfect pictures like most tours and every review of the upper and lower antelope canyons. The tour guide belonged to the family who owns the land, the family let us into their world, their magical oasis, and allowed us to get up close and personal with the land. I felt honored and humbled to walk these trails yet it felt like my adventure, our little family set the pace and we got to enter this nature kingdom. We got to be a part of the land not a part of a business. I cannot recommend this trip enough I was so unbelievably happy with this stop. Admittedly, at first I didn’t want to build this place up too much because I know as soon as this hidden treasure is discovered by the rest of the instagram traveling world that Mystical Canyon will undoubtedly be popular and buzzing with people. On the other hand, Lester and Roseann have a treasure, a true gem that anyone would be blessed to get to experience in...
