I have always loved The Short Branch in Crystal, Nevada, and recently stayed again with my two dogs during the Death Valley 49ers Encampment (November 6-10, 2024). The Short Branch is easily accessed by a paved road from Hwy 160, three miles down the road. As of now, the Sunset Lounge/Short Branch Bunkhouse (as renamed on Air BnB) is still an ongoing operation, and booked through AirBnB. Despite the fire two years ago that affected the saloon, the Short Branch Bunkhouse still provides the peace and solitude of the desert. The accommodations might be rustic for some folk, but it is cozy, clean and comfortable and has every thing you need. The shower was hot with good tasting water from the sink. From Pahrump to Bishop and beyond, desert water has high mineral content, so be not afraid if there might be white stains around the sink fixtures—it's where the Mojave meets the Great Basin. There is still a small gathering place that serves wine and beer for donations and is open on occasion (no posted hours). It is a great location between Pahrump and Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge with easy access to Ash Meadows and the Longstreet Casino via dirt roads (4x4 recommended as there are swaths of sand), when the weather is dry. There are a myriad of paved routes as well. My hope is that it will continue on for many years, but everything changes. I have always admired Kathy for her dedication to her Short Branch Saloon which has brought joy to so many visitors all these years and to her daughter for helping out during the challenging times. Thank you for another...

The owner keeps costs low by turning off the AC and fridges in the rooms when not in use, so you'll need to have a check-in time when she's there and ask nicely if she can turn it on before your arrival. Otherwise, it'll take a bit to cool things down.
It's an old bunk house. The porch squeaks, the beds are antique and there's dust in the window corners. Shower water doesn't get too hot, and it's well water so it's hard and leaves mineral deposits on the sink. This isn't a world-class Vegas resort! It is cheap, quiet, scenic, and there aren't bedbugs. You get a fridge, a shower, a door with a lock and a coffee cart and microwave on the porch so you can rock and watch the desert sunrise. It's definitely got character, and I'd recommend it to anyone who...
