My wife and I found this treasure quite by accident; I said find me a place with a fireplace indoors. She found Horn's Ferry Hideaway online. We arrived late on a cold winter Friday night and woke up Saturday to the sight of several bald eagles flying about outside our cabin. We were in awe. Since then, we have committed to visiting HFH about "every quarter" (3-4 months). Our motivation is to gain "down time" away from home (let's be honest, you can never fully relax at home as there is always something to do), take time away from our lovely children (everyone needs a break apart), and spend time together as "just us" (a wise owl once told me that couples need to do things together apart from the kids during marriage so you remain connected for when the kids leave someday). We are both big nature lovers and the time at HFH is therefore both active and reflective. You might find me reading, drawing, puzzling, sleeping, relaxing in a hot bath, running, fishing, hiking, sitting by an outside fire, driving the countryside, or even heading to a store or gym in Pella or Knoxville. Above all, the amenities (fully furnished and clean cabin, enclosed deck, TV with satellite channels, DVD/entertainment center for movies, kitchen/microwave/stove/fridge, and extra large tub with water jets) and customer service (super friendly camp owners are at your service as needed). We cannot say enough about this place. It's a treasure. If you haven't stayed, make time. You won't regret it. All can be summed up by the fact that my wife and I always say we wish it wasn't already time to go at the end of our stay and look eagerly to our next scheduled visit. Dave...
Read moreRecently stayed this past weekend. There was a cancellation and one night opened up. We stayed at The Haven. It was fantastic! Very beautiful and well maintained. It's apparent that the owners care about the guests. The cabin was well stocked and with quality touches. Little touches like a sound bar with the TV and quality sheets really made us comfortable. Very reasonably priced and Hugh, the owner, was great! He welcomed us soon after we arrived and gave us tips on things in the area to check out.
The only thing that can make the cabins better would be the ability to have pets inside. But I understand why not- due to other guests allergies and some people truly just don't watch their animals. There are conditions if you bring a pet and where they can be and you can talk to Hugh more on the details. Fortunately, I had someone that could watch my dog and I didn't have to bring him along. Somewhere cool for animals in the hot summer months would be great.
The cabins are amazing and so is the location. Would recommend to anyone and I certainly will be back again. Great stay and fantastic hosts....
Read moreMy husband and I booked a one night stay at "The Haven" cabin in early August. The cabin was beautiful, comfortable, and stocked with all of the basics. The Howe's really thought of everything! The kitchen was stocked with all of the basic cooking and eating utensils as well as baking / cooking staples (salt, flour, sugar, etc), a large bathroom with clean whirlpool tub and separate shower, huge comfy bed, couch, local restaurant and attraction guides, and board games. We were pleasantly surprised by everything! A short drive to the marina cove for reasonably priced kayak rentals was wonderful! As well as quick and easy access to beautiful blacktop and nature trails through the woods along the Des Moines River and Lake Red Rock. Only about a 10 minute drive to Pella for some local shopping and eating was nice too! Hugh Howe stopped down for a visit around 7:00, after texting my hubby to make sure it was okay, and introduced himself as well as to see if everything was okay and if we needed anything; definitely helped us feel welcome. All in all, a...
