We have been coming to Sandy Pines for 15+ years - staying in various cabins as our family grew with kids getting married and then adding grandchildren. We love our annual family week there and feel fortunate that our children and grandchildren look forward to our time together there too. Some things that make the resort special include: owners who truly care about their guests’ experience, comfortable well outfitted cabins, availability of boat rental, activities for the kids, great beach, plenty of fish just waiting to be caught and the location (close to outside amenities yet not “too” close). The fact that they welcome our dogs is an added bonus!

We visit as a family every year and the owner Jim is very attentive. This is a great, private, fun yet quiet resort. The lake is great for swimming, tubing and fishing (although we didn't catch a lot this year). We book 4 cabins as a group and will be back next year.

We have stayed at Sandy Pines 3 times with poppa and grandma (us) in one cabin and Daughter, son-in-law and 2 grandsons in another cabin. It is perfect for us. The resort is on a very nice wide swath of Big Portage Lake. Ample docks allow great fishing (especially for kids) and there is a nice well-equipped beach(lots of water toys). Cabins are updated and very clean. We rented a pontoon boat from the resort which makes boating quite simple. Big Portage Lakes connects with smaller Rice Portage Lake which then connects through a small wildlife filled channel to Deep Portage Lake. Each lake has its own personality and are uncrowded yet not too big. Fishing is very good in all 3 lakes. The resort has a separate laundry cabin, a fish cleaning shack and lots of tables, benches, basketball, tether ball and is nicely spread out (cabins aren't squashed in next to each other). The location is great: not near any big highways or other cabins or resorts yet just 4 scenic miles from Godfreys, restaurants, services and the small town of Backus. Godfreys is a fun full-service grocery store, mini-bank, bait store, fishing tackle store, gas station and full blown hardware store, clothing store plus more. A fun and friendly store. We strongly recommend...

This was my first experience with renting a cabin. But I thought this place was great!! Most people did seem to come here to fish. We rented a boat for 2 days and caught tons of sunnies. They were great for dinner. The cabin was clean. Small of course and paper thin walls but it didn't matter. I loved having the kids so close. We swam, kayaked, paddle boated, camp fired, fishing, hung out. My 2 video game addicted kids put down the games and enjoyed family and nature and I didn't even have to ask!! Loved the "curfew". Not a party place, thank goodness. A few negatives: if we rented a boat for 2 days and it came with a tank of gas, I would have like a second tank the second day. There were no BBQ tools in the cabin. I still give this place an excellent. We plan on making this a yearly tradition. Free...

ABOVE AND BEYOND! My husband and I rented the Aspen cabin for the two of us and our son’s family of 10 (8 grandchildren). First of all the Aspen cabin was BEAUTIFUL and PERFECT for our large family. The grandkids even commented on how much they loved this place! They really enjoyed the incredible beach area and the pontoon we rented for a day. Rod and Pam were the perfect hosts, who were there for anything and everything we needed. Pam offered her time and creativity for the kids (on a couple of occasions), which the kids really enjoyed. Rod was not only the handyman, but taking care of picking up any garbage, and making sure we always had what we needed. This resort was very clean and it had everything we’d hoped for! Lastly, thank you James (the resort owner) for your contribution in making our stay a Five...
