The Bear Store is a unique roadside landmark nestled along M-65 in Hale, Michigan, that blends the charm of a convenience store with the curiosity of a small animal exhibit. Established around 1984, it operates as a convenience/grocery store—offering snacks, ice cream, and essentials—while also housing a collection of live animals including foxes, rabbits, horses, goats, and formerly a bear (who has since passed away) . The experience is nostalgic—visitors can grab a sweet treat, browse the store, and get a close-up look at animals in enclosures adjacent to the counter. #bears #bearstore #halemichigan #puremichigan #m65roadtrip #michiganroadside #michiganroadtrip #northernmichigan #roadsideattraction #michiganwithkids #upnorthmichigan #quirkymichigan #hiddenmichigan #michiganlandmarks #michigantravel #smalltownmichigan #greatlakesstate #michiganbucketlist #familyfunmichigan #michiganadventures #upnorthadventures

I've been coming here for years with family and now I go with my boyfriend and I love it so much. I love Sophie the bear, I love all the other animals. I have a lot of good memories here. Last time I was here Sophie let us get a close-up picture of her, it was really cool.

August 2023 - came here for the ice cream and to see what animals they have. Beautiful foxes but wish they had more room to move around. The kids loved the ice cream (3 daughters from 6-10). Worth a stop for the ice cream if you are in the area.

We stopped here for some ice while passing through. We had no idea at the time of stopping it was ‘home’ to so many ‘rescues’. It was not until glancing at the small cages on the property that we realized there was actually a full sized female bear, along with three foxes there. The cages for the foxes, I kid you not, are about the size of the cages at dog shelters. That’s it. The cage for the bear is a joke. It is minuscule compared to what it should be for an actual bear, or pretty much any animal. Think about how far a bear travels in the wild. The HORSES had more room. The bear was anxiously pacing around its small enclosure. Over and over and over. Circle after circle. That is what it does all day. The foxes were doing the same thing. All of the animals exhibited very obvious signs of anxiety and depression, probably linked to their housing situation. On top of that, it is stated that bear eats a plethora of junk food, along with a steady diet of.. dog food?? An apex predator should not survive on that diet. Please, do not support this glorified petting zoo. Think about the lives of...

I stayed here last night on 11/25/23… it was my fiancé who is 6months pregnant and my 4yr old. We literally got our room took our bags in and went to a restaurant to eat dinner. We come back to our room smelling like marijuana due to the guy next door to us smoking which idc but when my kid and fiancé continues to complain about it there’s an issue. So I go in talk to the lady tell her what’s going on she tells me I can’t move rooms even though she could have moved us and that it was tough luck I literally tell her that she needs to put up no smoking signs in the room and tell people to not smoke in them and she tells me that she can’t tell people not to smoke lol I said you can tell them not to smoke in the rooms or go away from others windows and doors so they don’t have to smell it and she just didn’t care. I have continued coming here since I have been a little boy and in that moment I realized that this place doesn’t care or have the best interest in children. She could have done something but chose not to and for that I will no longer be stopping...

My family and I come here each time we come to visit Grandma and Grandpa. The animals are cute--our favorite are the bunnies. They give out huge scoops of ice cream; the kiddie scoop is enough for even my teen. The store has a good variety of things, from drinks and snacks to nicnacs and moccasins. We (5 of us) have even stayed in the motel! It's an old-school roadside motel, so don't expect any bells and whistles. Clean, quaint and super affordable, it's perfect for an overnighter or hunting excursions. Heater works well, has a small shower in the tiny bathroom and beds are clean and comfy.

I'm giving it 5 stars because it's great for what it is. They aren't trying to be something they can't be. It's affordable, the employees are totally kind and it's a unique roadside attraction of days-gone-by. Stop by if you...
