BATES MOTEL in Vermont. So weird. so creepy. The building is old and in no way can possibly meet code. Floors are uneven, walls and ceiling are cracked. Desk clerk comes and goes. The only way to reach him was by calling him with an extension number I got by knocking on the room door of the only other people staying over and that was after wandering around the property, both upstairs and down, calling for someone for about 15 minutes. When he finally arrived to check me in, he was pretty unprofessional and certainly unhelpful. I told him I had only 30 minutes before found out my fiance had been killed and and I needed a landline in my room to call people back home in CA. He had no emotional response at all and sent me to a room where the phone was attached to the wall so I'd have to stand. I asked for another room and he found only one where the phone was in a place that could be accessed from the bed or sitting position. There was no WIFI OR cell coverage (Verizon) and he told me I would find that most of Vermont didn't have either (which, except in this one town, was not my experience). I asked about cancelling my reservation and was told no refund would be issued since I booked through Orbitz (understandable but he could have mentioned I contact Orbitz for a refund rather than leaving me feeling like I was locked in to this Hotel California experience with no options). The room was very dated, the phone being a rotary, the bathroom very, very small and dingy with a stand up shower, and the light switch had wires sticking out of it. The TV only pulled in three channels (as I later learned but since I didn't have a working remote, I could only get one and spent the entire night listening to a Shark Tank marathon when I wasn't on the phone because I couldn't change the channel). I was really creeped out by the whole atmosphere and called a couple of family members to tell them where I was, just in case. In NO WAY would I have stayed the night had that other couple not been there in the next room. I spent much of the night making phone calls breaking my horrible news to family members. I later found out my sister had called the Inn and the extension creepy desk clerk guy had told me to tell people to use to reach me, wasn't working. She called and spoke directly to him, asking him to go upstairs to ask me to call her from my room so she could comfort me. He refused. Another friend of mine also spoke briefly to him before being transferred and my friend's first words to me were, "Who is Lurch at the desk?" The next morning, the other couple and I found the hotel empty again of any employee and ultimately made our own pot of coffee in the kitchen, as no basic breakfast was provided even though it had been listed online as supplying one. We had a great laugh about how bizarre the whole experience had been and how weird it was that even coffee hadn't been made. I went through a door marked "Employees Only" to get milk for our coffee and within seconds, the desk guy popped out of nowhere (I think he lives over the detached garage in the backyard which would explain to where he continuously disappears) and he admonished me at length for doing so because I was not an employee. By this time, I wasn't trying to be polite anymore. The other couple and I all walked upstairs, grabbed our suitcases and left. It was such a surreal experience. I've never written a review online before but it's been a month since my stay at the Salt Ash Inn and I'm still disturbed by the experience. More than anything, I want to advise any woman traveling alone to stay elsewhere. Anywhere else. It just has a really bad feeling...and there isn't enough money in the world for me to risk getting in a...
Read moreYour quintessential and historically time stamped Vermont hotel. Rustic comfortable no frills. Right down the road from Plymouth cheese factory. Stay here to add the true Vermont flavor you're looking for. Pluses out weigh cons 5x over. It's an old place so the you will hear people coming, going and moving around. Staff reflects the typical laid back vermonter: nice, laid back and non existent. No front desk, they leave you a note and a key when you arrive. No check out, drop it in a box. I arrived late and was confused how to check in, because I didnt see where they put the note I called the help number. Phone rang down the hall to be picked up by one of the guys we had passed in the bar (who I first asked if they worked there when I came in, to which they responded no as the played pool and watched the superbowl) so the guy who said he didnt work there did. When I asked on the phone how I should check in he replied annoyed, "dude, look down theres a note with your key." Could he have just told me that when I walked in? A bit offsetting. I get it, super bowl, not paid to work at night or something, but not how i would have handled it if it was my job... Room was as expected except the bed was not four posted, as advertised. I realize that may sound picky but my wife instagrams professionally, it was her birthday, and we had selected that room partially for the little nuances, such as a four post canopy bed, which was not there. Coupled with the discourtesy of the guy in the bar I decided to let it slide. Thermostat was finicky too, which controlled the electric fire place. Free wifi but no cellphone service, which isnt a bad thing if you need a disconnect. Otherwise the place is great for the price and would come back again. It's a lower budget larger then normal b&b (think camp mess hall meets Vermont rustic). Other visitors were heard but not seen (we didnt go to ski so we slept in). Dont expect world class service and luxury (which we didnt for the price) and you wont be disappointed. I recommend for those who are laid back and not fussy about the little...
Read moreI can’t say enough:||1. No one to greet us when we went to check in; after waiting at least 5 mins for assistance, one member in my party went looking for him; his response, when found, was he wasn’t expecting us so early so turned his phone off(the time must have been approximately 3:55 - check in was 4:00!)||2. Our room was on the 3rd floor; after traversing some very narrow stairs to get up there, we found the room hadn’t been prepared for our arrival. A third floor room, with no windows open, was VERY hot and musty smelling. We were given 2 window fans and were told it would cool off in the night. ||3. We were furnished towels that had been tossed on our beds. The towels were rough, thin and discolored, ||4. There was a hallway off the main room that led to the bathroom. A twin bed was in this room. There was no way this room was ever going to cool off in the night - it had no window. ||5. The three of us decided these circumstances were not acceptable and found other accommodations. Al, the proprietor, would not consent to a refund, so we were stuck with the room. ||6. We checked on the room the next day and found, at 4:00 in the afternoon, the room had not been cleaned. (We had left water glasses in the room and they were still there.)||7. For all of this we were charged $179 for the 1st night and $98 for the second. Al was only interested in the money and not guest satisfaction. ||We were spending 10 days in the New England area. It was unfortunate we had to encounter Al and his House of Disgust, but we moved on to enjoy the rest...
