Wolf Cove Inn and the staff truly made it feel like a home away from home. My girlfriend and I stayed there for three nights (THR-SUN) in THE BIGELOWS room. Located on the third floor facing the front of the property (parking / road side). Although some cars could be heard, it was mostly not a bother and having nobody above or behind most of the surrounding walls made it a quiet room. Speaking of quiet, the AC is whisper quiet and very effective at keeping the room cool. The bed and linens were clean and comfy. The room has a (small) TV with cable offering many channels. There is also good Wi-Fi throughout the property - no password required since it's fairly secluded.
Wolf Cove Inn did their best to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Super friendly staff, always greeted and offered any assistance. They were very helpful with information on local activities and offered bug spray for our hike which is available for the guests. There is (free) bottled water, canned soda, coffee and tea available throughout the day. There is a mini fridge on every floor which is always stocked with beverages and a coffee / tea Thermos in the dining area. Speaking of dining, the included daily breakfast here is part of what makes WCI a special experience. This is a FULL breakfast and puts most "hotel included" breakfasts to shame. It changes daily including: eggs every-which way, quiche, omelets, bacon, sausage, pancakes, French toast, fruit cups, baked goods, various cereals and even some GF options. There is a welcome board by the main entrance with individual room slots which daily surprises you with a pair of fresh maple cookies and tomorrow's breakfast selection page. Choose what you want, mark it on the page and drop it back in.
Aside from the comfy rooms and tasty / plentiful breakfast Wolf Cove Inn also has a nice lake with free canoes and kayaks for the guests to use. The nice dock helps with using the kayaks or to fish off of (need your own rods). Although we did not have any luck fishing here (nor see any fish), we did spot a Bald Eagle in the distance and a beaver swimming around the dock at dusk. There isn't much of a beach, but there are plenty of lounge and Adirondack chairs on the lawn overlooking the lake. They are quite relaxing to use during the day or in the evening while by the firepit. Again, the property offers everything to make the stay hassle free and enjoyable. Making available lighters, logs and fire-starter for the firepit. Binoculars to observe nature / wildlife. Bug spray if needed. And various board games to make the day / evening more fun. We played some backgammon, while watching the sunset and observing the stealthy beaver.
Poland Maine is slow-paced and there isn't a hopping downtown, which was nice for a change. However there are plenty of places to visit including the Poland Spring Preservation Park, which has the Poland Springs museum and nice hiking trails to enjoy. Although we were bothered by ticks and mosquitoes during our hike (mid-June). There are many antiques stores in the area which we enjoyed visiting and shopping at. A few breweries and a local Oxford Casino too if that's your thing. But the star attraction here aside from hiking and antiquing is the Maine Wildlife Park which we quite enjoyed visiting. It like a zoo which consists of mostly local animals which for various reasons wouldn't have survived on their own in the wild. There's an interactive guide on their website to use during the visit. Aside from breakfast, other food is only accessible by car with enough restaurant / take-out choices not too far. There's also a Walmart and Hannaford supermarket nearby.
All in all we really enjoyed our stay. It was nice to finally stay somewhere else after the Covid lockdown and this was the perfect choice. If you're looking to escape from the repetitive schedule and enjoy a quiet getaway, I would definitely recommend visiting Wolf Cove Inn and enjoy a few days in...
Read moreThere are a lot of positives at Wolf Cove Inn and some negatives. Some of the drawbacks are out of the control of the Inn. Route 11 runs behind the Inn and is busy most days from early am until after dusk, including large trucks. The traffic noise is ever present around most of the property, especially outdoors. We could hear it in the cabin, even with the windows closed and the a/c on. The "lake" is small and not deep, thus leading to a very shallow, disappointing "beachfront" with weeds, reeds and not the best swimming conditions. We noticed a lot of people on this lake boat out to the middle and swim. The waterfront needs some TLC and the kayaks and canoes were not in the best condition.| The Eagle Nest cabin, which was very clean, lacked supplies and equipment that were hinted at in the description of the space ie: what we "assumed" would be supplied for getting food and eating meals at the cabin if we so chose. The fridge etc is not in the pictures on the website. The fridge was a tiny dorm fridge with a "mini" microwave on top. Otherwise, a coffee maker, wine opener and a few paper cups completed the equipment in the room. We had to ask our server the first night for supplies and got one napkin, 2 forks and 2 knives and 2 wine glasses. No paper towels. No spoons. For the money charged and the description of the one cottage, we were disappointed with the limited supplies. | We hung the sign out for "refreshing our room" as instructed the first morning, but returned late that afternoon and had to ask for it to be done. Was told most people "don't ask to get their towels refreshed." Our towels needed refreshing, our trash needed emptying, etc. I felt terrible for asking. We also felt bad about a breakfast on the porch with a very unhappy toddler and a very loud toddler program playing on a laptop. The experience for a room in the Inn may be completely different.| The plus side is friendly staff ! who after the first ask for service that did not happen, asked every morning at breakfast if we wanted our room done. The food was good and we enjoyed the choice. We did not do the special dinner in the boathouse. The flowers and gardens on the grounds are beautiful ! The view across the lake to the conservation area and where the sun sets is fantastic. We did enjoy sitting out in front of the cabin at sunset. The shower in the Eagle Nest cabin is lovely. Every space we visited was clean and neat. They are very welcoming to dogs. | We stayed for 4 nights. In looking into the guest book in the cabin and rereading the reviews online, we realized there were a lot! of couples and they only seem to stay for one or two nights! We can see how this would be a very romantic spot for an elopement or a small wedding location for a weekend ! We would not necessarily recommend more than a few days stay...
Read moreMy husband and I eloped at Wolf Cove Inn and had a wonderful experience from beginning to end! We bought the diamond elopement package which included venue space for the ceremony, officiant, bouquet/boutonniere, wedding cake, champagne + flutes, romantic dinner for two with custom menu, breakfast delivered to your room the next morning, one hour of photography, two night stay, plus a discount on our third night and help with wedding planning. The package was well worth it and made the planning process less stressful. My bouquet was beautiful, although not the exact colors I wanted, so make sure to be very specific. The cake was delicious and HUGE considering it was just the two of us. Plenty of leftovers in our freezer.
I can honestly say that every single bite of food we had was delicious. Their breakfast every morning was amazing. They make it a priority to use organic & local ingredients, from the must have English muffins for breakfast to the filet mignon we had the night of our wedding. The grounds are beautiful and the location is very peaceful and quaint. Nicole, Geoff and all of their staff were so warm, welcoming and accommodating. I can honestly say we felt like we were treated like the king and queen throughout our stay, but especially on our wedding day. They made sure everything was as perfect as can be. We stayed in Eagles Nest Cabin which was private and detached from the inn, it was so beautiful and rustic. The only criticism I have is the lighting was very poor, which I would normally care less about, but it made getting ready for the wedding difficult as well as photography. If you plan on getting married at Wolf Cove Inn I would say just keep this in mind, that’s all.
One last thing that is worth mentioning is their sauna and cold plunge. The sauna is a beautiful wooden structure with views of the lake where we were able to watch the sunset. The cold plunge was quite literally an ice bath, not only was it 33 degrees but the slab of ice on the bottom lifted while my husband was in the tub and Geoff had to come out and hack away at it with an axe 😂 Such an amazing and unique experience. It also included hot tea, infused water and a nice fruit platter. Very, very relaxing and cleansing experience that I would consider a must if you stay at Wolf Cove, even if you just opt for the sauna (the ice bath was really intense, definitely not for everyone).
If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway with excellent food and service, especially if you plan on eloping like us, Wolf Cove Inn is the place to go. You won’t regret it. We can’t wait to go back again we...
