To sum it up 2 people (my wife and I who are experienced fishermen) caught total in 5 days fishing 3 salmon, no lingcod, no yelloweye, several halibut and quite a few rockfish. The first day we returned with ZERO fish for 4 people. The 4 people on the boat caught less than 10 salmon for the week. Other boats at the same dock had piles of salmon, rockfish and LARGE yelloweye and in speaking with others in town we heard limiting out by noon??? Heard the same story from others from around the island also. The owner/captain was not on site and the other 2 guides seemed to not know where or how to fish. Don't trust the brochure. The front page includes a photo of someone with a trap and crabs. They have no traps and no crabs. It describes for those staying 6 nights and fishing 5 days there would be a steak and crab night. No such thing. Fresh bread every night. Not one night. Said they would catch fresh bait. Lots of bait around but we were given frozen bait which comes right off the hook and they didn't even try for any fresh bait. The guide had only a gaff with a handle of about 8". Imagine trying to gaff a fish from a boat that size with that. Only other way to land a fish was to harpoon it or land it with a net. Nets spook fish easily. State Troopers were headed our way and the guide was worried because he had no registration for the boat. Luckily they didn't board us. It may have ended our day. There was no control of fisherman by the captain/guide. We had an etremely rude, large fisherman who thought he owned his spot and that every time any rod was hit trolling it was his fish. No discipline or structure of the fishing. It may have been better in the past. Someone who had been there 3 times prior mentioned that he should have a refund and he would never return again. An older gentlean was on the boat fishing and caught 1 salmon, one halibut about 30" and some rockfish. Upon returning home several packages of the fish we did get were not sealed. The vacuum was broken. || Just another detail ignored by the lodge. That's it. That is not what you think of when payng $4000+ for an Alaskan fishing trip. I have to say scenery was very good. Pretty country, whales, otters and...
Read moreIf you like to fish and you like to eat fish this is the spot. It was so much fun last year we took the whole lodge again for a week with family and friends. Clean comfortable rooms with individual baths. Marilyn and Roxy take turns in the kitchen and the food is all home cooked from scratch, simple but excellent. Lunches consist of sandwiches and chips but who has time for lunch when you are catching so many fish. Boats are top notch and perfect for the task. Marvin, Abner and Grey are great captains who have been fishing these waters all there lives. Joe is his crew are supper clean and precise with the fish filleting. We brought back 730 lbs of halibut, salmon, rock fish and ling cod frozen and vacuum packed.||||My advice on the trip to Kodiak is avoid Raven Air if possible, fly Alaska Air. Raven can't fly when it is foggy and has weigh restrictions that will leave your bags behind if the flight is full. They were kind enough to make sure we got the fish on board, but still waiting on those bags? ||||We shipped all our wine directly from a vineyard and brought liqueur with us in a wine shipping box. Bonny, the owner of the taxi service can get beer in Kodiak and have it in the car when she picks you up for the final leg of the journey.||||We missed Captain James who was out on a job, but not so much since he was not there to remind us when we were running late after a long night on the patio sampling wine or in the wood fired sauna!! ||||This is a very smooth operation in a fairly remote location, thanks to the great...
Read moreMy brother and I took both families w/kids 14,16,21(girl),23,25 and of course our wives were there and loved it. We took the whole lodge. The lodge is just like a comfortable home, simple but very functional. Boats are perfect for the type of fishing they do. It is like being in a National Geo movie while you are catching all the fish you could possibly want. Halibut, Rockfish, 3 kinds of Salmon, Octopus(7ft), ling cod, etc. Whales, Otters, Bald Eagles, Killer Whales are everywhere. The scenery from the water was as captivating as the fishing. Captain James runs a tight ship but is a pleasure to be around, have him play "Fish On" for you which brings good luck for sure. Capitan Marvin is the real deal Alaskan, born and raised right there and there is no nicer Captain on the seas. He does not talk much, but when he does its either real funny or informative. The fish cleaners do a great job packaging the catch each day and kitchen staff cooks the best breakfast, lunch and dinner. We shipped wine to the lodge directly from vineyard so we had incredible wine at each dinner. Take a lot of whites cause you eat a lots of yummy fish. Don't miss a trip to the hatchery for bear watching. We are headed back...
