Traveled and stayed three days at the Venice Marina for the holidays. I stayed at one of their cabins and put the boat in the slip and dock just below the cabin.
The marina has seen considerable damage from Hurricane Ida. However, the marina has done an amazing job in reconstruction of the docks, slips and marina facilities.
The boat ramps are excellent. The marina, restaurant and deck areas around the marina are first class. The cabins have seen wear and are needs updating...but they are clean and the linens, shower/bath and kitchen area are good.
The bait at the marina was limited to frozen shrimp and fish. As the season progresses, live bait should become available.
Location of the marina is really ideal...you can fish to the east of the River through Baptiste Collette or east out through Red Pass. For the bigger boats, a run down the River puts you offshore into the Gulf or into the lower Delta for fishing in the marsh or into Breton Sound. I fished out through the Baptiste area one day, and outside of Red Pass along the rim of island and marsh areas just on the fringe of the Gulf.
For drive time, it is a longer trek. However, the highway down Plaquemines Parish is smooth and fast. With limited grocery stores, it helps to bring an ice chest of food and drink.
For some of the most beautiful coastal landscapes and water along the Gulf, this is one of the places to plan to...
Read moreI had reserved the Crab House for one night and discovered when I arrived that the staff had bumped me into the shabby "cabins" so as to take a 3-day booking. When you book a cabin the staff takes your credit card number but sends you no confirmation of your booking. We decided to eat at the restaurant this past Sunday, June 3, because the staff told us it would be open til 10 p.m. We got there at 8:30 p.m. and were told that the restaurant had a two-hour backlog of meals (already ordered by other people) that they had not served, and that they were taking no orders because they were out of food. The cabins are shabby and the "television" has about screen smaller than my laptop. The beds are so small that if you're above six feet tall you have to sleep diagonally. They don't even make the beds; they just throw a sheet on the bed. Their checkout policy is such that if you book a charter fishing trip, you can't re-enter your room to take a shower. I strongly suggest that you find other lodging and eat elsewhere. This is a poorly managed organization that treats people shabbily because they have so little...
Read moreBeware! The fish cleaning & shipping service is terrible and they don't seem to care.
The fishing was great! Three of us caught redfish, sea trout, red snapper and Tuna. Had them clean, package & freeze the fish, separate them into 3 boxes and ship overnight to 3 different addresses. Cost us over $700 each ($2100 total).
Well the results were horrible! Very disappointing after a great trip.
For each of the 3 of us, when we received our 3 individual boxes, the Styrofoam was broken and the contents partly thawed. One third of the bags were not sealed properly and air had gotten in.
And we were led to believe that the fish would be divided into "meal size" packages. Well that did not happen! The tuna for example was divided into approximately 10 pound portions, stuffed in a bag and frozen as a chunk. So you want some tuna? You got to thaw 10 pounds of it!
I called to complain & they responded that it was FedEx's problem. Ah! No! I contracted with you to clean and ship my fish. They said they would take it up with Fedex but it is now 4 months later and I have not heard a...
