I have business in Postville that will keep me here for most of the week, and rather than drive 30 miles to a place I had heard of, I thought I'd give the Pines a try. It looked nice - well groomed. I generally don't stay at small non chain places, and I avoid placed that have the rooms exit straight to the street, In my experience, folks tend to get up to no good at places like that. Well, I settled into a small basic room. It has a small TV, iffy WIFI internet, a saggy bed - all not good signs. I only booked for the one night in case I didn;t like ti. Deal sealed, I'm driving 30 miles to Prairie du Chein for the rest of the week. Shorty aster I settled and finished my working day, I hear quite a racket - pounding on a door a few down from mine. The manager went and got a key, and proceeded to take all of the contents of the room and put them out next to the dumpster. I anticipate this means I'll hear screaming and shouting later when the occupant of that room returns. Sometimes inexpensive is too cheap, and all things considered - it's not that cheap. Just $10 more a night gets me a brand I know 3o miles away, most...
Read moreI had noticed this place as I drove by in the past. It is a striking look into yesteryear from the road, and I thought it would bear further investigation under the correct circumstance. ||I finally met that circumstance, and gave it a shot. Wow, I am so glad that I did. Classic retro architecture and neat as a pin rooms with decent pillows and mattress. Banana plants in the lobby and the owner willing to explain them to another plant lover. ||If you read my other reviews, I am always harping on how we are losing the classic places of our past to the generic corporate world. Well, this place is what we as a society need to keep some of what I am talking about. It is the best of both worlds- classic in the layout and convenience ( you park outside your room, what can be easier than that?) and the rooms are more home-like than the corporate cookie cutter dreck. ||I have heard that the breakfast is better than the corporate world offers also. I just couldn't wait to try it before I had to write this review. ||If you are in the area of Postville ( a most interesting town) and are going to be spending an evening, give this...
Read moreI've stayed here multiple times over the last few years and have found that it they had new staff every time I came and the place has gotten worse every visit. Every time i spoke to the staff about the condition of the place they blamed it on the construction. This past time just like every other time my room had black mold on the bathroom, dirty and old carpet floors and beds which you can feel the springs. My room smelled of urine and was damp despite having the AC on the whole time. I spoke to the property manager who appoligized about the condition of the place and gave the same excuse as all the staff and said he'd take care of it. Which he did not. Even the table table and the whole bathroom sink was dirty. Here is a photo of some of the wipes I used to wipe down some of the surfaces. They don't even have a front desk anymore. If you need to speak to someone you have to call the elms motel in West Union multiple times over multiple days to get...
