I have always had a fascination for lighthouses and my boyfriend found this particular one and decided to go. It was a 9 hour car drive from where we were coming from. A simple one at that. I was nervous at first due to some of these reviews, but I'm glad I didn't let those stop me. This lighthouse is beautiful and maintained very well. Our room was comfortable and homey. The room we stayed in was a nice size room looking out at Lake Superior. (I wish the bushes were trimmed down so I could have had even more of a view of the lake, but I didn’t plan on staying inside the whole time so it wasn’t a downside.) Our bed was a very nice size and comfortable. The towels were soft and even warm due to the towel warmer and the room was furnished nicely and appropriately. The keepers were welcoming and very well informed of the back history of the lighthouse and Big Bay itself. The keepers interacted with the guests, but only in the morning and upon arrival. One of them was a little chatty, but when you’re excited and happy about a certain topic you tend to enjoy talking of it too. Pay attention and ask questions. He holds some good information. Other than morning breakfast and arrival the keepers tend to keep to themselves. They have their own life to live! The two breakfast's I had while I was there were fantastic, I'm still craving the french toast. Breakfast was held family style, which I enjoyed because you were able to interact with other guests. (Which is kind of what a bed and breakfast is all about.) One of the mornings the breakfast consisted of eggs florentine, fresh fruit, coffee, juice, bacon and scones. The second was stuffed french toast, sausage, muffins, coffee, juice and fresh fruit. They did have yogurt and other things available. You are welcome to explore the grounds as you please and the lighthouse tower is always available to go into. They also have a sauna located in the tower. They provide you with a list of, “Things To Do.” We had only one actual day to do sightseeing, but were able to get the things in we wanted to do most and never felt rushed doing them. The area is absolutely gorgeous! One night we had a pizza dinner at Lumberjack Tavern. Get the pizza! I’m not a big fan of pizza, but it was fantastic. The other night we had dinner at Thunder Bay Inn which was also nice. One downside, which is under no one’s control is that it happened to rain at night during our stay. The rain caused a bit of humidity so biting flies decided to inhabit the area. Once you get a certain distance away from the shore the flies tend to dissipate. My experience with the Big Bay Lighthouse was a fantastic one. It’s sad to see them selling, but after 20+ years of constantly entertaining guests I would want to move on too. I hope it will always be a bed and breakfast because I would love to go back again....
Read moreWe stayed at the Big Bay Point Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast in August for four nights. We used it as a base for exploring the surrounding UP. The inn/lighthouse is the only active lighthouse that is privately owned and operated as a bed and breakfast. The owner and innkeeper, Nick, is a wonderful host. His passion for lighthouses is amazing, and is reflected in the care exhibited throughout the property. As a staying guest, you have access to a part of the lighthouse tower where you can sit and watch the sun set or rise. After sunset, you can watch the beacon as it shines over the lake.
The lighthouse and rooms were decorated with comfort and style in mind. There are plenty of cozy nooks inside where you can have a glass of wine and enjoy the ambiance with your favorite novel. The same can be said for the surrounding grounds. They’re simply immaculate. There is plenty of outdoor seating around the property where you can enjoy the views of Lake Superior.
The beds were comfortable. The rooms were clean. The breakfasts were beautifully prepared, presented, filling, and tasty. Since the area is remote, internet access is limited, but not unwelcome. Instead of looking at a phone, we enjoyed expansive views of Lake Superior. There is plenty of parking.
The lighthouse was a great base for visiting the UP. Nearby Big Bay is a unique draw for true crime buffs who want to know more about the event, book, and subsequent Hollywood film, Anatomy of a Murder. Don’t worry - it happened back in 1952. The Lumberjack Tavern and the Thunder Bay Inn are available for lunch and dinner. If you’re looking for a wider selection of dining establishments, bustling Marquette is an easy 30-minute drive.
If you’re reading this with just an interest in visiting the lighthouse, you’ll be disappointed. This is a private residence. There are no regular visiting hours. We suggest checking the innkeeper’s website to find out if and when tours are available, and plan well in advance. Better yet, plan a stay at the lighthouse for yourself or with a significant other.
If you’re searching for a signature, getaway experience you find it at the Big Bay Point Lighthouse B&B....
Read moreThis is the 2nd time that my wife (Maryanne) and I stayed. The first time, it is where I asked her to marry me. We loved it so much that we spent a few days of our honeymoon there as well. First and foremost, the immediate impression of the lighthouse is pride of ownership and attention to detail. The owner Nick (who is the host as well) is very welcoming and very chilled. Other artifacts from other lighthouses that Nick owns are displayed throughout. It makes for a wonderful tour. We stayed in different rooms both times and I won't go into which are the best because as long as you can get in, no matter the room you should book it. Along with the very clean and comfortable room, you'll enjoy the charm and detail that each display. Here is the thing. The Big Bay area is a sort of sleepy area, and it is exactly why we love it. Anatomy of a murder (book and movie) was based on the happenings at Lumberjack Tavern. The story is interesting, and it is also interesting that Henry Ford and family spent much of the later years in Big Bay. It makes for a great learning experience if you know little about it and even if you do, you are sure to take away something more that you didn't know before visiting. If you are fortunate to be able to book a room at the Big Bay Lighthouse, you should do it. Nick, along with the lighthouse itself makes the whole Big Bay experience wonderful. You can bet we will...
