My husband and I just got married this past Friday. We decided last minute to go to Duluth for our honeymoon. We used booking.com and found the Duluth inn and suites. We don’t like staying downtown so this location was ideal, pictures and reviews looked decent. Everything was downhill from there. We let them know this was our honeymoon and asked if there were any add on packages and there weren’t, which is completely fine I wasn’t expecting one. This is just to say we did let them know that it was our honeymoon and the GM did respond to that message. We checked in around 5pm on Tuesday after dinner. We got to our room and it was not the king spa i had booked. We went to the front desk and were told there’s nothing they can do tonight and booking.com sent our stuff over wrong and we can talk to the GM between 7am-3pm the next day. Again, frustrating but not the end of the world. Then we try our TV, it’s broken. So we ask the front desk and they move us over a room. Again the TV in the new room won’t turn on. Instead of getting a third room on our first night we decide to fix it ourselves and spent 30+ minutes trying to move the dresser and turns out our box wasn’t even plugged in. We went to bed frustrated and over it. Woke up the next morning at 7am and were in the lobby at 7:30 to speak to the manager, who we were now being told wouldn’t be in until 8am. There was a nice girl at the front desk though who told us our room would be ready later in the day and we’d get a call so we ate breakfast and we’re on our way to sight see. Around 2pm we get a call so we head back to the hotel yet again and move rooms into the king spa with a jacuzzi tub. We’re exhausted so we move our stuff again and then go to our new room to take a nap. My husband comes over to me and shows me the floor transition near the tub is broken and sticking up so I wouldn’t trip or injure myself. We also find out at this point they have a whole crew redoing a bunch of stuff in the hotel. They’re also working in the room next to us so I didn’t get that nap with all the banging and stomping and voices and music around the hotel. I wish we’d have been told that was happening prior as well because nothing is less relaxing than that. Our bathroom also seemed only partially cleaned and there were hairs on our toilet seat which just made the room seem not clean. We left again because I was getting extremely agitated even being at the hotel. We came back after dinner and decided we’d hang out in the jacuzzi and watch a movie. We run the bath and when we look, the on off switch for the jets is completely missing from the tub but at this point we didn’t even bother to alert staff because we were tired of moving rooms and spending more time at the front desk than anywhere else especially because the manager was never anywhere to be found. On our final night we debated just leaving but decided to just get some sleep and head out early so we could finally end this honeymoon from hell since we had already paid for the room already. We woke up early because again we had been told the GM would be there at 7 and again we were told he’d be there at 8 instead. We weren’t interested in waiting on them again. So we asked for our receipt and left. Then we get our receipt and that we’ll hear from the manager because on night one we were told we’d at least get a refund for the first night. Our receipt shows we paid $432.50 after tax, booking.com showed we’d pay $466.20 and my husbands bank statement is showing $482.60 and we weren’t supposed to even be charged until we got there and it was taken out Monday when we booked despite selecting the option to charge us when we got there. The charge came from the hotel not booking.com so we were frustrated with that as well. Overall, I wish we’d have spent the money at another hotel. I spend a lot of time in Duluth for work (usually 4-5 times a year) and a lot of the time I’m at 2-3 star hotels and have never had an experience like this. If you’re looking to book this hotel for ANY other reason than to sleep, book...

Firstly, I was happy with the Receptionist that checked me in and out. They were both very kind, cared bout my stay and explained the details to which the pool and other amenities, to how they could be used due to Covid. The Hotel in its self, in appearance it's bad, could use a little updating and an absolute better cleaning staff. This is to why my score is one one star. Cleaning is extremely important, not due to the current issue to me, but in general. So much dirt, grime and finger prints on the walls. Base board and just kind of every where. As for my room... 3rd floor, they have an elevator which was nice. That needed some attention too. The room.. gross!! There was so much dust on EVERY picture frame, door frame and end table/tv stand/ coffee stand. Stains on the sheets( one bed), garbage on the floor, visual under the table, garbage under the beds (yes both), garbage under the wall heater, splattered food on the walls, something sticky on the table, and beyond lose corner protectors. Sink drain was clogged, took forever to drain to brush teeth or wash our hands. Finger prints on the mirrors and just over all yuck!! Beds were okay, a bit too firm. I have uploaded pictures but I have no idea if they will be added. Google has changed so much of how reviews are done. I would prefer the old way that they would be attached to a review, but now they just go into a bucket view and no one really gets to see the real pictures of actual stayers verse the staged ones by the Hotel and Google. You might be asking why I didn't call on the front desk for the issues, we were experiencing. Well, We spent the day hiking and got in after 11pm, so we wanted to just hit the shower and a bed. I expressed my concerns, when I checked out. She was very kind and apologetic for the non cleanliness of the room. She wrote down the number and said she would contact the Manager. I have not a clue, if that happened. Per my review via the Hotels stay , I received an "Im so sorry: , Email. Which I thought was very generic and lacked care. She said I hope you stay with us again. In my view, for $157.35, My room should have beyond exceeded my expectations , which it did not!! I feel I deserve some kind of a refund, to be honest. I am not aware of what the breakfast was like as we slept in til 10am. I will never stay here again. There is a hotel across the road, might think there, next time. For a Best Western Plus, This hotel is very much lacking!!
6/2/21.. as per reading upon the other reviews, its seem as though the cleanliness, up keep and lacking in updating, had been an issue for Months. I have read back to 7-9 months, and same same same... GM Ms. Ashley Johnson is apologetic and says she will look into it and make needed changes. Well, 9 months later and here I am writing a similar review. I would not waste the $100- $150 , it will cost you to stay. NOT WORTH IT!! I am waiting on a reply from Ms. Johnson to have a partial refund, as this stay was...
Read moreWhen I booked this hotel, all I saw was the 3.9 star rating and didn't even give it a second thought. I travel alot for work and stay at hotels at least 50% of the year, so I am usually pretty good at picking out a decent one on the internet with the work budget I have. Usually anything over a 3.5 is decent and though I have never stayed at this particular hotel, I have stayed at many in Duluth and have only really had one bad experience (save that poor excuse of a waterpark which I will not mention by name).
When I got to this hotel, I immediately began to worry as the sign in the front was a makeshift one, which to me meant construction, dust, and inconvenience, but I still did not let it deter me. The lady at the front desk was very pleasant and accomodating and got me situated quickly.
Once I was done there, I went up to my room to make sure it was clean and to turn on the air condition so it was nice and cool by the time I got my luggage in there and began to settle down. As far as I could tell it was nice and tidy and the air condition unit appeared to work quite well (bells all around!). So I got my luggage and other things and returned to my room.
Now, I don't write reviews often, but I felt obligated to because when I finally got settled in, I decided to look at the reviews for this hotel. I have no idea why, I was pleased, but I did notice the place was quite empty and for a nice and affordable hotel, I found that strange. Much to my suprise, most the recent reviews, were not only bad, but horrible, really, really horrible.
I know this hotel has changed ownership at least once in the last three months and is now under the Choice brands, which, even though in the past that has been hit-or-miss, recently they have really raised their game. I stay at Choice almost exclusively now, mainly because I feel they are the best for your buck and the rewards program is very reasonable.
It's pretty clear this hotel has had a renovation and it looks great, I also did not see any of the bugs that were reported in other reviews. It was clean overall, the pool and spa were very clean and well-kempt. The beds and pillows were comfy as well.
The only negatives I will say about this place is they need to make sure to remove all the paint tape from the rooms and everyone else (the pool area for one) and the breakfast is nothing to write home about. The paint tape doesn't really bother me, but it does make the place look sloppy. The breakfast needs work, the eggs and sausage were overcooked and rubbery and the coffee was watery.
Despite that, I will definitely stay here again. The staff was nice and they left me alone, which is something I greatly appreciate. If you have stayed here in the past and have had a negative experience, I encourage you to try it again, it is obvious that it has recently gone under a transformation...
