Our group of wildlife watchers from western NY stayed at the Lamar Cabin for 10 days in December. It was our base camp for our excursion into the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone. The cabin was spacious, well-equipped, well-furnished and cozy. With outside temperatures in the minus teens, it was a warm and welcoming to come in from watching wolves all day to such a cabin. The kitchen was exceptionally well-equipped with “tools” for our discerning cook. I highly recommend the cabin for family or group gatherings at the doorstep of Yellowstone.
Update: December 2020 This is our 4th year staying at the Lamar Valley Cabins. Depending on the size of our groups, we may stay in one or both of the cabins. With that said, we have always had an exceptional experience here. Both cabins are well-stocked for cooking in a "semi-gourmet" fashion, the rooms are spacious and immaculately clean and the close proximity to Yellowstone National Park makes Lamar Valley Cabins our only choice for excursions into our nation's first national park. Winter access is via a plowed road from Gardiner, MT to Cooke City, MT. This is the only road open in winter that accesses Yellowstone. The driveway into the cabins is plowed and easily accessible to vans and cars. Earth Spirit Excursions will stay in no other place! Updated Review December 2022
Again, our group of wildlife watchers stayed in both the Silver Falls and the Lamar cabins for our winter Yellowstone excursion. As usual, they did not disappoint. Both cabins were exceptionally clean and well stocked with additional blankets, pillows and other necessities. In addition, a new heating stove was installed in the Lamar which added to our comfort as well as outdoor grills. The kitchens are both well equipped and fully functional with up-to-date appliances and accessories. But nothing can compare to the views, location and wildlife that we enjoyed at the cabins! To have all the amenities as well as the scenic benefits of being in the Yellowstone region is impossible to adequately describe. Around the cabins, there are hosts of wildlife: foxes, bison, moose, elk, pine martens and winter species of birds. Returning to the cabins after being in the field all day (especially in the frigid winter) was a pure joy, with all of us sharing experiences of the day. Our hosts were accommodating and flexible with regard to all of our needs. I highly recommend these cabins if you're looking for complete accommodations close to the NE Yellowstone entrance and access to the wildlife-rich Lamar Valley. Lamar Valley Cabins, again, receive my highest recommendation. Thank you, Karen and Jeff for being such great hosts. Joseph Allen, Earth Spirit Excursions
Update 2023
Again, our group of 11 stayed in both cabins, the Silver Falls and the Lamar. Our accommodations were as we have experienced before, impeccable. The most common comment from our participants was, "wow, this is top notch." Since our group has primarily a wildlife watching and environmental education priority, we find the location of the cabins well suited for our explorations and wildlife photographic efforts in the Lamar Valley and northern tier of Yellowstone. Silver Gate, Montana is, in my opinion, the best location to stay while visiting Yellowstone. The quaint charm and friendliness of this community as well as easy access (1 mile) to the northern tier of Yellowstone is unparalleled. The northern tier of Yellowstone is contains the highest and most diverse wildlife populations in the Rocky Mountains. The cabins are fully equipped with all we needed to facilitate our excursions. Fully loaded kitchens as well as outdoor grills make meal preparation effortless. The cabins are located within minutes of trout fishing, hiking trails and a myriad scenic locations. The owners, Jeff and Karen, are quick to respond to any questions we had. These accommodations will not disappoint anyone looking for a "glamping" experience in the mountains. They...
Read moreAfter spending 4 months working in GTNP and living in Gros Ventre Campground, finding the Lamar Valley Cabin was a welcome haven. We did not find it through a 3rd party site. Instead, we found it through a Google search of housing near Lamar Valley. Our goal was to stay in a comfortable house while fitting in a wildlife tour through the Lamar Valley. The owners were able to provide us with a recommendation for a guide familiar with the area. In fact, he grew up in the area and was a natural, focusing on our interests.
The Lamar Valley Cabin was perfect for us and communication with the owners before, during, and after our stay was prompt and relevant. It was interesting to run into Jeff, one of the owners, and hear about how he and his wife Karen designed and built the cabin themselves (as well as the one next door). Their house is impeccably kept (a welcome change from camping). Definitely step into the past by visiting the hotel/bar next door where the author of a Hemingway book is the bartender. It is worth a visit for breakfast at historic Log Cabin Restaurant (right across the street) during the summer/early Fall seasons.
The only recommendations we have are, perhaps, to specifically state the Lamar Valley Cabin’s pet policy online (no cats). Also, we would suggest updating the cabin’s handbook/guidebook to include more than hiking trails with restaurant, general store, and wildlife viewing information.
We definitely hope to make a return trip to the Lamar Valley Cabin as it suited our needs perfectly. What a wonderful area/place to...
Read moreWe recently stayed 8 nights at the Silver Falls cabin, our 4th time at this remarkable location. The review I posted last year is so thorough, I’ll repeat much of it and add a couple notes on hikes we enjoyed. The cabin is welcoming, feels like our home away from home. The wooded setting is soothing and the cabin itself has every convenience for an extended stay. Luxurious bedroom suite on the upper floor, Scandinavian style large living room, small but functional kitchen, cozy dining area, washer and dryer, windows galore, well stocked, good water pressure, two bathrooms and other bedrooms, a mixture of comfy wilderness and graceful elegance. A wonderful home base for the Lamar Valley as well as a great place to relax and hang out. We saw 9 bears in the Park this trip, a personal record. All from the car between Trout Lake and Slough Creek. We enjoyed hiking at Trout Lake, Slough Creek, Yellowstone River on the ridge by the picnic area, the South and North Canyon rim trails, and the Cascade River Hike. We are aging and avoid anything too strenuous. Owners Karen and Jeff are everything you’d hope for - immediately responsive, friendly, genuine, and caring. We met them both during our 2024 trip. Engaging and thoughtful. ...
