Well, we had a rather strange experience. We requested a weekend, Saturday to Monday. The host, Leighanne, warned us that there would be a dinner reception at the property Sunday evening. So to accommodate, she put us on the second floor and we agreed not to use the first floor during the reception.
We get in on Saturday. There were no other guests, so we pretty much had the house to ourselves Saturday evening. Sunday morning, Leighanne comes up out of the basement. We didn't know she lived in the basement. After exchanging greetings, she suggests we leave and find another place to stay. She said multiple times, "Last night did not go well." She was referring to our three kids, I think. She probably thought they were loud. Like kids usually are. They didn't damage anything, they were just being kids. And we thought we had the house to ourselves. We didn't know she was underneath us the whole time.
I explained to her that we planned to eat out Sunday evening and then come back to put the kids to sleep, bringing minimal disturbance to their dinner reception. But she didn't seem happy with that. Even though she gave us the final decision, we weren't comfortable staying any longer because she strongly suggested we leave and it felt very passive aggressive. Honestly, it threw me off because of how well reviewed this place is.
So we packed up and left. She at least let us stay past our check-in time so we didn't have to leave in a rush. Sunday was my wife's birthday too. So instead of enjoying a relaxing day at the bed and breakfast, we had to leave and figure out what to do with our vacation. An apology would have been nice. I mean, you're the one who said it would be fine for us to stay on the second floor, and then you changed your mind and suggested we leave. Even if she had second thoughts, she could have at least apologized about it, explained the situation, and taken ownership of her mistake. Instead, she was passive aggressive and unprofessional. "Last night did not go well." No, lady, that night went perfectly normal. What are you on about?
I'm sure most guests won't have the same experience, but this still might be something to consider, especially if...
Read moreMy fiancé and I stayed here for a week in June 2019.
Leighanne is a very accommodating hostess. She contacted us prior to arrival to ensure that she stocked her pantry to suit our dietary requirements for her full service breakfast and to ensure that she would be home to greet us when we arrived.
Leighanne chooses fresh, high quality ingredients to serve on her breakfast menu. Her expansive kitchen is also perfect for those looking to make their own meals and she welcomes her guests to make full use of it.
Leighanne’s home is the perfect retreat: the décor is inviting and her housekeeper keeps the space clean and tidy; there is a hot tub and large patio opening out to a beautiful and well-maintained garden that provides space for relaxation; the rooms are spacious, the beds are comfortable and the walls are well insulated to provide for a restful night of sleep.
Leighanne mentioned to me in conversation that her motto has always been to “under promise and over deliver”. I would say that she’s kept her word during our stay. During our time at Leighanne’s home, we also met guests who frequently stay there when visiting Richmond; I think this is a true testament to the high ratings for this bed & breakfast.
I highly recommend Seldom Scene Meadow Bed & Breakfast and will definitely be staying here each time I am...

From the moment I arrived, there was a warm, homey atmosphere that made me and my wife feel instantly comfortable—almost like visiting family, but with the polish and quality you’d expect from a four‑star Hilton. The property is tucked away in a safe, peaceful setting, surrounded by nature and wildlife. Morning coffee on the porch came with the sound of birdsong and the sight of deer grazing nearby, making it the perfect escape from the busyness of everyday life. What really set this stay apart was the owner‑manager’s attentiveness. You can tell they truly know how to anticipate travelers’ needs—whether it’s providing helpful local recommendations, accommodating special requests, or simply making sure everything runs seamlessly. Their hospitality struck a wonderful balance of professionalism and genuine care.
