Beware ~ We are mystified how this place could receive any positive reviews unless they are from friends or family. Note, 3 reviews are from nameless inactive "Google Users" one review form Melanie is her only review ...
Perhaps it's a different experience during the winter time when it's snowing and no place to go. In our humble opinion, their website is VERY misleading.
While planning our 2013 Summer road trip, my wife called U.L.R. twice to make a camping reservation. Both times, she spoke with Stephanie who said we'd receive a call back from Jennifer. We never received a call back. We should have left it at that, but due to their website and their potential locale, we persisted. I called from the road, two days before our arrival and reached Jennifer. She seemed pleasant on the phone, assured us we'd love the place and took our reservation including my credit card info. She said they wouldn't charge our card until we arrived and we'd receive a confirmation email as well as an envelope would be waiting for us on the bulletin board outside the office with our campsite information.
We never received the email confirmation, but drove there anyway. When we arrived, there was no envelope as promised. We saw a sign directing us to the camp host. We went to the host's dilapidated trailer only to be greeted by an angry, aggressive dog. We called out "Hello" above the barking and growling but no one came out. We looked around a little and this place looked more like a run down residential trailer park with a few small cabins dispersed, than a resort. The camping area was an open field without any shade / trees and no fire pit offered. There was a seemingly clean yet rustic bathroom shack with showers in the general area (that seemed to be the best amenity there).
We went back to the office for one more look. As we were about to leave Jennifer pulled up in a car with a sketchy guy sitting passenger. She asked if she could help and we introduced ourselves. She apologized for not sending the email or posting the envelope as promised. She seemed hyper and offered up multible excuses saying she was over worked and under staffed. My wife was unusually creeped out by this place (she has great intuition). We said we've decided not to stay there and went on our way.
Jennifer called us today (17 days after our 'visit') to say she never received payment for our stay. I reminded her of our visit and detailed the conversation and our dissatisfaction with their "resort". We also told her our feelings about their misleading website. She said they have been locked out of their website due to a 'divorce' and planned to make some updates when possible (more excuses). I can't imagine the place changed much since their website was built - Umpqua's Last Resort is not at all inviting.
I just checked my credit card statement and discovered we WERE CHARGED! Now I'm going to have to deal with getting a refund. Sheesh ~
We highly recommend avoiding this place.
The good news is there are a lot of state campgrounds (and at least one private facility) in the area that are clean, shaded, offer fire pits...
Read moreWe had a wonderful time at ULR! Toby, Seth, and Dustin (guide and owner) were very accommodating.
So let’s start with the negative: There was one issue, the Wi-Fi wasn’t working on my phone or my partners, and there was no direct access to cable television. They were super cool about it and refunded us the fee for the Internet, but this ultimately did not fix the problem and we went without access for two days. Likely, this is an uncommon problem, and they were very surprised and basically had a loss for the issue. Honestly, this ended up being a good thing because we totally unplugged (something we never do), and spent all of our time enjoying each other’s company, playing card games, grilling food, imbibing on some adult beverages, and of course, doing miles of hikes, waterfalls, and kayaking.
The bathroom situation is not ideal, as there are two stalls and two showers available for the whole park. That said, I never had to wait to use the bathroom, and the water was hot and had good pressure. Not really a negative, and when you consider the cost of the cabin… I can’t complain.
OK, the positive: Our cabin was the “king cabin”, had a very comfortable bed, a mini fridge that was fairly effective, a water-cooler, and a working AC (which, if you’re familiar with the Pacific Northwest, you know that an air conditioner is not always a guarantee at any hotel or resort). The outside had a nice little picnic table, plus a grilling area and fire pit - we utilized both. Other options include mini RVs, permanent “tents“, and a tiny house!
This is an amazing area of Oregon. It’s about 45 minutes to an hour away from crater Lake, an hour to an hour and a half away from multiple sites along the rogue river, and, best of all, within 15 minutes of two of the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve ever seen (Watson Falls and Toketee Falls).
There are a couple of restaurants within about an hour. Of course, an hour is pretty substantial, so if you’re all about doing a food getaway, this might not be the best place to go. That said, we went to Manly’s Tavern on 58 and Becky‘s pies on 230 and thoroughly enjoyed both. The drive either way is beautiful, so you really can’t lose.
There are also rentals available. We rented kayaks and enjoyed a lovely afternoon on the lake. I actually would recommend going a little bit later than we did, say around four or 430 so that you can enjoy the serenity of the lake at Sunset. Oh, and by the way, we saw a bald eagle! There are also guided tours of local waterfalls, etc.; you have to give at least a days notice to get these.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The scenery alone is worth it! The friendly staff of both ULR and the Grocer next door made it all that much better. We will definitely be back...
Read moreI stayed here for two nights in one of the king cabins. When I arrived the camp host, Jesse, was in the office and had all the paperwork ready for Check in. The office is filled with flyers for stuff to do along the Umpqua River. The cabin I stayed in was clean and ready right at 3pm. The cabin was bigger than I expected! A king sized bed, along with a small bench and four chairs, was included in the room. There's a small fridge and freezer and a microwave. The freezer is actually a regular freezer, so you can keep frozen items frozen easily, like ice cream. There is a loft accessible by a ladder with a bed as well so this place can easily accommodate four people. There's a tv with a DVD player and some movies on the counter. There is WiFi here as well so you can stay connected if you want. There's also a small water cooler. The bathrooms include two showers and lots of warm water and a heater so you're not freezing like other campgrounds. I did see a lot of RV's here with black water hookups and electricity. My site had a picnic table and a fire pit with a privacy wall. They are currently building a tiny house that will house many people and will have its own bathroom. The grounds are surrounded by woods on three sides and the road on the other. You can hear the road when large trucks go by, so if that bothers you, you will want to stay in a tent or RV on the upper hill. We did hear turkeys in the afternoon, which was a nice sound of nature. There is a trail down to a part of the river on the property which I used several times. This place is dog friendly and I brought my dog with me to hike. The area is full of waterfalls that are very close to camp. I went to Several water falls and up to Diamond Lake. If you want to go to Crater Lake it will take you two and a half hours in the winter but only an hour in the summer. The North entrance isn't too far, but is closed for the winter. I'm excited to come back here especially since I was told they are expanding the site to add more tent and cabins. I'm also excited to stay at the tiny house. Make sure you bring your camping equipment if you want to cook your own food. There are a few places around but Steamboat Inn won't be open for a while for food service, so you'll have to trek down to Glide for restaurants. There's also a small store in walking distance to the camp. Can't wait...
