Campers Review of Oak Lake Family Campground, Fair Oak , Indiana
My partner and I spent weekends camping at Oak Lake Family Campground, after the new owners took over. It was our opinion that they were doing a good job of trying to bring the grounds up to standard. Then last year, right at the end of the Memorial Day weekend we decided to become Seasoners of Oak Lake Family Campground. NOW this is where the REVIEW REALLY BEGINS. We asked questions about what we could do and could not do as we were driven around the campground looking for a site that we liked. We were told that they were a GREEN Campground and going to be more GREEN, soon to find out you better have a BIG wallet with a lot of Green in it $5's, $10's, $20.s and so on, or Credit cards because everything that goes on with this campground is about the Almighty Dollar, BUT one of the famous comments is, IT'S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY. When we first started camping the swimming and the water toys were free. Soon the swimming was free but the water toys would cost you to use, along with some bicycles they purchased. I can see charging for the bicycles by the hour, but NO first cost was $10.00 for a wrist band that covered you or a child for the weekend along with a $5.00 deposit if you wanted to use the bikes, (BUT IT”S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY). When asked if my 3 year old grandson could jump on their jumping bag for a couple of minutes they said yes for $10.00, (BUT IT”S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY). Now if you are a seasonal you can purchase a wrist band for the sum of $72.00 a child per season, not for a band to switch between your grandchildren , Per Child, (BUT IT”S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY) 1 St. On their website they offer FREE WIFI, so you don't ask any questions. After paying a Non Refundable amount , in our case was $1400.00 plus a $200.00 deposit, we find out that the WIFI is only for the weekenders, NOT Seasoners, even if you offer to pay (answer = NO).
Rules that were told but NOT in Writing,,,, you could have a screen house with a wood floor, you could have a wood deck no more than 8 foot out and no more than the length of the trailer, without the tongue. I asked one of the owners if it was ok to add a sidewalk between the two decks so there would be less chance of tripping and falling. I was told fine and Ok by one of them. By the way another Great answer to any question that you ask why did you tell me it was ok to do is,,,,,, (I Don't Remember Telling You That) When we went in to pay our $1,435.00 lot rental, I was told that my sidewalk had to come out. I ask for my check back and told owner that I would get back with her. I decided to change campgrounds and pulled first load of things out on my utility trailer. When I came back I was locked out of the park , forcing me to block cars and walk back and see what the problem was. After leaving the park, I was not given back our security deposit of $200.00 because we had broken one of their Rules , You must give 90 days written notice of your intentions to leave your campsite, or you lose your security deposit. (BUT IT”S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY)

Read moreWe will definitely be back! This is one of the cleanest campgrounds to which I have ever been! I am usually hesitant about taking showers at campgrounds because of all the spiders and spider webs hanging overhead. Not one spider or web here (except for the very large spider I managed to bring home in my bedsheets - lol)! Each shower stall is large and is equipped with a rack to put all your toiletries, and the water was hot!!! I did notice that some of the stalls were without toilet paper and I personally had to give a lady toilet paper. But this was also Memorial Day Weekend, so the place was packed to capacity. There were plenty of activities for kids of all ages. Even though some cost extra, I guess you have to expect that wherever you go. My niece recommended this campground to us and, to be honest, I was very hesitant about booking because of all the negative reviews and people calling the owners Nazis. The owners were very nice. Yes, they enforce rules constantly, but you have to if you want your campground to be a family-oriented place. There was a bit of confusion as we were checking in. It seems that they gave our campsite to someone else arriving before us, but it worked out for the better for us, and we were not charged for the extra rate. Yes, the owners are always making sure kids & adults have wristbands on if you want to use the jumpee toys, but is it fair to the people that buy them, only to have kids that don't pay use them also? There is a fun glow-in-the-dark tractor pull every night that the kids enjoyed. There are nice hiking trails. There are numerous play areas for the kids. You can tell the owners are really trying to keep the place nice. Our site had newly laid dirt with grass seed and a new evergreen sapling planted on it. There was a fun thing called Water Wars where a truck comes through with water balloons and hoses. We really had fun with that one, didn't we Alan???? And don't forget to try their home-made cookie ice cream sandwiches from the store!!! To die for!!! And, no, no one likes the firewood rules, but they are the same wherever you camp because of the bug infestation. One thing that would have been nice was if the store sold refrigerated items such as milk. With three grandkids and 4 adults, we ran out of milk and had to leave the campground for it, but there was a store nearby. However, if you are in an RV and not towing a car, this could have been a problem. All in all, the positives far outweigh the negatives, so, Yes, we will be...
Read moreWhen we first started weekend camping at Oak Lake, we absolutely loved it. It was a great place for my son and his friends. The rules are very strict and most of them I agree with, especially because I feel my son was safe at the campground.
We decided to become seasonal campers and that's when the hassles started. The first issue is with the owners attitudes. Although you can tell that they try very hard to keep themselves in check, this is a very huge task for them. When something is not to what THEY think it should be (regardless of if the expectation is clearly outlined or not)....they get irritated quickly and do not know how to speak to people. My son was screamed at with the "F" word because he threw trash in the wrong garbage bin!
Another issue we had was that two days after we signed our agreement for this season, we were given a checklist of things that we had to change on our campsite, one of which included making a purchase of something that we already had approval to have on our site. Giving them our deposit and first payment to keep when we walked away "nope, no refunds - sorry"
When we told one of the owners that we were contemplating leaving, we were told "good luck, have fun - there's more coming in than going out."
From a business perspective these people have no clue, they are not customer friendly and have a horrible way of communicating things.
One of the ladies in the office, Beth - is amazing. She is able to communicate very well, even bad news without making you feel like your stupid.
These folks have a place that could be a great place for people to enjoy, however, they spend the majority of their time yelling at people, changing rules and charging for every little thing. It's a sad state of affairs when you spend half of your time at the campground wondering what they will yell at you about next as they are always running around on their bikes checking out what everyone is doing. It's almost as though they love finding things wrong just so they can feel superior and yell at you.
If only they could treat their seasonals like they do the weekenders, they may be able to keep them for an extended amount of time! We found another campground that is truly peaceful with larger sites and even my son said to me this past weekend "hey mom, this is great, we haven't been yelled at once since we've been here." ...
