We visited Anza-Borrego State Park for the first time over Christmas weekend, as a group of 3. Decided to camp here due to its proximity to the park sights and ease of getting to it. We stayed at site 117 which was very spacious and fit our large tent no problem. All sites feature a fire pit and picnic table. Depending on which site you choose it can have space for multiple tents (seemed like most of them) or only have space for one. There are a handful of sites that are extra cool - they feature stone ramadas with a built in fireplace and tables (sites 116, 104, and 107). I would opt for one of those sites next time! The campground was pretty quiet at night. We didn't have any neighbors too close to us. The stars at night are gorgeous! You can spend hours just staring up at the sky. The Palm Canyon trail starts from the campground - no need to drive to the trailhead, and it is a hike worth doing. There are several open air toilets around the campground. I expected them to be pit toilets but they flush. There are regular building toilets with sinks as well. The only downsides to camping here are 1) at night you can see the lights of the town (doesn't interfere with stars at least), and 2) the cost. I would try one of the other more remote campgrounds next time or dispersed camping, now that I've been and know the...
Read moreThis is one of the best campgrounds I have visited! Mainly because the staff is awesome and there are plenty of resources! At night there is nothing but the sound of silence or an occasional coyote howl with a dark sky full of stars like most have not or rarely seen.
Hot showers for a couple of bucks, clean water, and plenty of restrooms w/ sinks and plugs. Plus Water facets are located liberally throughout camp sites It has one of the Best Afternoon Hikes I have done in the West which is the Palm Canyon Hike to an Oasis in the Desert!
It is next to the awesome little town of Borrego Springs which is full of guinine, outdoor loving people. It's in The Anzo-Borrego State Park, CA's largest. There is plenty to do without spending money in the Anzo Borrego Desert!
The desert is much more alive and vibrant than most people imagine - Right now the WildFlowers are popping up!
If you live in LA or San Diego county, this is a great weekend getaway within a few hours for just a few bucks. (Bus back and forth from El Cajon and Borrego on Thurs. & Fri.)
Really Great Hike & Bike...
Read moreI’ve stayed at this campground twice. The first time 12 years ago it was really hot, but we had a great time. The second time was in April 2019, and it was awful. I think the difference had to do with location. ||||The first time we camped here we were at a tent site at the front of the campground right next to the bathroom/shower building. ||||This last time we were at a tent site in the back part of the campground, which is very far away from the entrance and the other campsites. It was extremely windy in the back area of the campground, and we ended up packing and leaving in the dark the second night there. We were seriously afraid our tent was going to blow over after the tent stakes started coming out of the sandy ground from the crazy wind gusts. ||||IMPORTANT: Also, on the campsite map online it shows two bathrooms in the back campsite area. But be warned. There is only one bathroom/shower building and it is closer to the front. The other “bathrooms” are actually toilets surrounded by 5 foot rock walls with NO door or roof (see...
