Review: Steel Creek Campground Steel Creek Campground offers a wonderfully secluded and rustic camping experience. The thick trees and underbrush create a sense of privacy, making it easy to forget you have neighbors. Most of the car-accessible tent sites are generously sized and feel quite roomy, with fairly level driveways that are great for car camping. The campground's facilities, however, feel a bit neglected. The bathrooms are old and dirty, with peeling paint and stained toilet seats. In some stalls, the space is so tight it's barely possible to sit down, let alone change clothes. A word of caution about the check-in and payment process: This is a first-come, first-serve campground, but be prepared for a potentially unusual interaction with the camp host. My experience was less than welcoming; a gruff initial encounter ended in them taking payment while appearing annoyed at being disturbed, despite it being their job. The biggest issue I encountered was with the campsite availability. After paying for three nights, I was told on the third day that I had to pack up because someone else wanted the site. The host claimed this was a "risk you take" when paying for multiple nights, contradicting the "first come, first serve" policy and the stated site availability. This forced me to cut my trip short and left me feeling like I lost a night's payment with no refund offered. Overall, if you're looking for a truly woodsy and private spot to park your car and pitch a tent, Steel Creek delivers on that front. Just be aware of the outdated facilities and the potential for a difficult and frustrating experience with the camp host and...
Read moreAfter hours of driving we arrived at the campgroup at around 2 PM. We found a site with an expired reservation so began to look for the camp host or a fee box. Since neither were present we called Resorvation.gov to confirm availability. After being advised the site was available since no new reservation was posted and we would pay the camp host in the morning we began to set up camp. After returning from a short hike around 4 PM we noticed a new reservation posted. Unable to get ahold of the camp host, maintenance, or anyone who would give attention to our situation (even leaving messages on two different numbers) we decided to call the local Zig-Zag ranger station at which time we explained our situation and was advised the claim to the camping spot was ours. To avoid displacing the family expecting to arrive at their reserved spot we decided to pack up. It has been two days since and we have yet to receive a returned...
Read moreNO views of Mt Hood in that site, I can start there. It's fantastically beautiful, as green as it gets, however there are lots of fixable potholes leading to the campsites, like huge ones. I don't know how RV's get through it..must be a miracle. I drove a Honda Fit there because I'm a moron. Also bring bug spray, natural or otherwise and wear long pants so you only need to use bug spray on your bare arms. I saw lots of birds and chipmunks and they love to rummage through your bags looking for food, it's actually kind of adorable. As always, hide food overnight in a vehicle. I never saw a single bear but I'm okay with that! Lastly if you want to book nearest the creek, it's site 22 and perhaps others on that side. You'd literally be next to the...
