Site 10 has a canopy that you can post up if you plan on hammock sleeping for the night. Also one of the largest campsites to host multiple people. Only downside was it was far from the bathrooms/showers.
Overall it's a decent campsite to stay for the night if you want to get away from beach and crowded areas. Aside from Parsons landing this was the second secluded campsite we hit on the trans catalina trail.
Potable water almost at all campsites. Large water fire buckets to put out the campsite at night. Food lockers were clean and it seemed like one per site which was good. Bathrooms were clean compared to other chemical toilettes out on the trail and had a bottle of hand sanitzer,
Stars are the brightest here if you plan on star gazing. You get a nice mist going when it starts getting dark and the temperatures drop pretty cold up there so make sure you're prepared for that.
Was able to get 4G reception up there to send off a few messages to loved ones.
Just a headsup there is another campsite around the corner from blackjack so you may see random people walking...
Read moreBlackjack Campground was the perfect first stop on our Trans-Catalina Trail trek. After the initial stretch, it gave us a chance to really rest, refuel, and soak in the island’s beauty. The campground itself is big, spacious, and well laid out, so even when it’s busy you don’t feel cramped.
On the way in, we were lucky enough to spot plenty of wildlife—bison grazing in the distance, a few hawks circling overhead, a curious fox, and even some deer along the trail. It really set the tone for the adventure and reminded us why Catalina feels so special.
By the time we reached Blackjack, it felt like a reward. The quiet, the fresh air, and the open space helped us recharge and get energized for the days ahead. If you’re hiking the TCT, I’d definitely recommend spending the night here—it’s a great balance of nature, comfort, and that feeling of being in the wild without being too far off the grid....ps got...
Read moreThis campground is large and spacious, only problem was the numbering of the sites was off and map didn't help at all. Water tastes of chlorine and hard minerals and made our tea taste metallic. We had to add electrolytes to everything to make it palatable. Guess we are spoiled from hiking the sierras and filtering out own. We tried to run the faucet water through our katadyn, but it didn't help at all. Campsites have a picnic table each, some have 2 and a fire pit that is currently not usable due to fire danger. There is a cold outdoor shower with no privacy, but it was much appreciated after the hike out of avalon. Just a side note, there are no switchbacks on avalon. Everything is straight up and straight down. Awesome stay here overall, I would definitely...
