Oak Flat was a wonderful gem to stay at near the LA area. It's a small campground with two main loops at the top of one of the hills just outside LA. The area is moderately forested. Smokey the Bear (pre-diet) greets you to a one-lane paved road up to the campground (second right). There were three pit toilets, which had been recently redone, and two dumpsters for garbage collection. I wouldn't want to pull anything larger than a car+travel trailer, or moderately sized (I'm guessing in the 30' range) RV. No hookups, but everything was quiet and pleasant. I left my travel trailer there during the day for about a week recently, and everything was just fine (locked). It's free with an America the Beautiful pass, which a ranger asked to see my third day there, around 10:30 am. I was a little bit leery of the place from previous reviews, but it was a nice...

Can't believe they've been cleaned in a month and we were there on a Weds. None of the sites were big enough for a truck and small trailer (18') and the roads were so tight it was tough for us to get through the grounds and back out. The "ranger station" is a gutted rat trap, fire trap that needs to be taken out or repaired. We spent the night in the station driveway. There's no water for the camp - yet there is a boy scout camp with water and fire station barracks with water so pipes come up but no water for campers. Nope - not a good experience. Stopping at the roadside rest would have...
Read moreLoved this whole campground. Outhouses are well kept. Ya need a permit to camp, but security was lax so we never got asked for ours. We camped there on a Saturday night, not packed at all, and many spaces to choose from. We saw RVs, tents, and cars in the area, so pretty sure their isn't a limit on size. We camped there just a few days before Nov. 1st, and the no-fire pursuant was still effective. No smoking unless in an enclosed area as well. There is an entrance to the I-5 north ramp that goes underneath this tunnel when we left Oak Flats that was pretty cool. Cell service/signal works great up there, too. Also a very quiet and...
