The park itself is pretty amazing. Very beautiful with lots of short trails to walk and explore. Now the campground leaves a lot to be desired. Very old with campers piled on top of each other. Also, when we were there (Christmas season),we hit the jackpot with screaming kids at 5 o'clock every morning. People erected flat screen TVs (plural) in the evening and cranked the volume as they competed with each other. There were quiet rules such as (and this is posted right in the bathhouses) "don't let your kids or pet run wild as some people come here for quiet reflexion." Well, good luck with that as the rangers did absolutely nothing to enforce any kind of rules. I have camped from northern British Columbia to Key West Florida and have never seen anything like this. Forget about listening to birds. Oh, and on another note, if you take the tour, try to get a seat as close to the left side of the trolly as possible as that is where 90% of the points of...
Read moreA huge park with the highest number of rare and endemic species in the state of Florida! Rangers at the entrance were patient and helpful, this park was spectacular. We spent about 4 hours here and didn't get to see everything. Access road through the Florida scrub allows sightings of deer, gopher tortoises and other native wildlife. Playground and picnic area with the CCC museum and camp store, which had a pleasant variety of choices in beautiful log cabin style building with some local favorites like Orange ice cream and gator jerky. A two mile driveable loop allows you to experience the hammock with it's lush tropical forest, native wildlife, and numerous walking trails, all very achievably sized. A breathtaking boardwalk (not pet accessible) winds through the Cypress swamp, but beware of the mosquitoes, bug spray or solid skin coverage is a must. Overall an amazing experience and I look forward to returning with my family to...
Read moreCamped in the tent only section and it was wonderful! P16 has plenty of shade all throughout the day and probably has the most privacy/space between it and the next spot. Other campers out here seem to understand the quiet hours rule which made the weekend even better as that seems to not be the case everywhere. Campsite was very clean and plenty of room for multiple tents/bug/changing rooms . Bugs were only bad first thing in the morning and right around sunset. There are bathrooms/showers by the RV side (packed) which was close to a 2 mile hike. Firewood is available at the park shop since you’re not allowed to collect here.
Highly recommend...
