The pursuit of adventure can lead one to unexpected places, where cultures collide and unique experiences await. Such was the case when I stumbled upon Dragon Racers Camp at the Tail of the Dragon—a haven for adrenaline junkies and road obsessed enthusiasts alike. Run by the charismatic Istvan, this camp brought together the thrill of driving, the fellowship of bikers and car people alike, and the joy of communal feasting.
From the moment I arrived at Dragon Racers Camp, it was clear that I was in for an extraordinary experience. Nestled amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Tail of the Dragon, the camp emanated an air of excitement. The rumbling sound of motorcycles mingled with the aroma of burning rubber, and a spotlessly clean camp enlivened with Istvan's sculptures made from bike parts. (The toilet is flushed by revving the throttle of a bike handle.)
Istvan, the camp's spirited host, welcomed me with open arms and an infectious grin. His passion for racing and community building were immediately evident. He effortlessly transitioned from stoking the flames of the fire pit to sharing stories about his time spent on the Tail of the Dragon on his motorcycle. As dusk settled, Istvan conjured up an enticing Hungarian dish right before our eyes, infusing the air with an array of tantalizing spices.
Gathered around the fire, a motley crew of racers and curious souls joined me in savoring Istvan's culinary creation. The dish, bursting with robust flavors and a delightful blend of textures, transported us times throughout history people put aside their differences to share a common love. Each bite unfolded a story—from Marty's brand new C8 to Tyler's 2,000 mile journey on his KTM.
But it wasn't just the food that made the trip unforgettable. Istvan, a man of many talents, revealed his love for Moto GP by setting up a massive outdoor TV screen for us to watch a thrilling race unfold. The collective cheers and gasps reverberated as we witnessed the unparalleled skill of the racers. It was a harmonious convergence of passions, where racing aficionados bonded over the prowess of their favorite riders.
Dragon Racers Camp is not a camp, it is a mecca for enthusiasts. Istvan has created an oasis where speed, tradition, and fellowship intertwine to create an experience that is both exhilarating and comforting. In the span of a single evening, I found myself surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Tail of the Dragon, new friendships, and a restful night of sleep after hours by the campfire.
Dragon Racers Camp is an extraordinary destination that promises to ignite your senses and leave an indelible mark on your soul. Istvan's contagious spirit and the alchemy of his Hungarian culinary prowess will transport you to a world where high-speed thrills merge into an experience that is nothing...
Read moreWe wanted to check out Robbinsville because we are considering moving there and found this camp through a google search of places to stay near the dragon. I read multiple 5 star reviews about the Dragon Racers Camp and all I can say is they are so spot on. The camp itself is extremely clean and situated right off a quite road nestled in the forest. While it is geared toward motorcycles we were welcomed just the same driving a car. It was so peaceful and quite. The cabin was basic and super clean with 2 super comfy beds a mini fridge, coffee machine and an AC unit also with heat. Outside there is a covered seating area with a gas barbecue grill, bottled water dispenser and fire pit. The bathroom and shower are right next to the cabins and likewise were super clean. There are some very artistic and creative welded sculptures when you enter the camp. The whole camp is just a few months old and the owners Istvan and Lizzie are super passionate about making you feel like friends you’ve known forever and not just someone paying to sleep in a cabin. Istvan was waiting for our arrival sitting by the fire pit with a welcoming fire. On our second night he and Lizzie were cooking goulash for dinner over the fire pit and offered us and 4 other quests that were staying the camp dinner which was excellent. We all sat around the fire pit sharing stories and experiences. We’ve stayed at many camps before but never felt so welcomed as we did at the DRC. Istvan and Lizzie are the “Special Sauce” that made this a memorable experience that we will not forget. When talking with the other quests they expressed the same feeling. One thing I observed was a bike rider had some issues with her motorcycle and Istvan who is motorcycle racer himself was able to fabricate a part to repair her bike so that her trip riding...
Read moreIstvan is undeniably the finest host and human being to ever grace this earth. My buddy and I arrived late after running into a thunderstorm on our way up to DRC but pulled in around 1130 at night. Istvan was down the drive way and welcoming us to our cabins before we had even got off our bikes. The warmth and passion of this man cannot be described properly in words, you will simply have to meet him yourself. Let's not forget his recent first place finish in Talledaga. The man's knowledge of the Dragon and surrounding area is truly a wonder to behold and he was even gracious enough to share some of his favorite roads with us.
The cabins are cozy and exactly as pictured but the beds are where they truly shine. There are gear hooks and helmet racks for each bunk, enough storage under the bed for as much luggage as you could want and the heating/cooling units work great for the small space. The bathroom and shower were spotless and of course adorned with more creative motircycle art.
To top all of this off the art and racing decoration around the property and woven into every aspect of the camp is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is beyond evident how much heart and soul was poured into the camp. Last and certainly not least the driveway and every piece of pavement in the yard is emaculate and beyond comparison please help keep it that way with the provided stand pads!
Thank you Istvan and Lizi, your property is magical and I hope to return...
