This “resort” is obviously geared toward wedding and events only. The hotel was completely booked for the weekend of the VIR races however also double booked Saturday with an outdoor party for 50+ with a DJ that was visible and audible for all resort attendees to hear and watch. |Food service approved by what I was told were three cooks in a single kitchen facilitating the tavern, mansion dining room, catering and room service for all guests and event attendees plus locals coming in for just dinner. We waited over an hour each night for food at both Darbys and The Mansion. It appeared the private party took precedence over all hotel guests, even though they jacked the rate to $299 per night for race attendees over the weekend. So they charged a premium but then lacked the service of anything that should be called a resort. In addition the help(with the exception of the lovely gal at the front desk from 8am -8pm; and Cadence at Darby’s), we’re atrocious, short, rude, unprofessional, poorly attired, and completely untrained. House made special cocktails are made with Monin syrups instead of fresh ingredients. Bartenders have little to no experience in mixology and the menu and ingredients show. One kind but totally untrained and unskilled bartender was available in the “Mansion” dining area. Drinks were very slow, poorly executed, and no y in our party finished their first drink due to them being so sweet and artificial tasting from the use of fake syrups for juice.|A bathroom is conveniently located next to our dining table so when each guest opened the door we would have a great view of the toilet they just used when they exited. Gross!|Our waitress told us three times she would bring more bread, after 2:15 we never receive bread after being told three times we would. She disappeared because she didn’t know what to say when the kitchen wasn’t bringing our food. 4 adults and two kids sharing 4 entrees and three salads. Not a difficult task to execute. |We inquired and were told 7 more minutes, after over an hour from when we ordered food. We were walking out after waiting an additional 15 minute to go to McDonalds before they closed, to walk into the bartender now bringing us out food because our waitress couldn’t stop crying after being told she lied to us about the bread, disappeared a half hour ago and never came back and checked on us or gave us an update or explanation, and told me it wasn’t her fault, they had no manager on site for the weekend and she was the only waitress(granted they only had 16 guests all night long in the dining room(and we were 6 of them)!|She ended up discounting my friends bill 50% and mine only 30% claiming that’s all she could do, even though the bartender who brought us food and apologized algae already told us we would get 1/2 off. It took her fussing at me in front of my daughter to get her to void the first charge and fix the bill. During this there were 4 employees sitting in the bar area talking about me and my friends. This had already occurred earlier with the bartender and my daughter and my friends daughter already overheard them talking poorly about us.|We simply told our waitress we didn’t want her to finally come back around to the table in another 20 minutes to find us all fine, so you need to call someone and explain we’re leaving soon. She’s 18 and very untrained and too much of a passive server to perform under any stress. Hiding in the bar was her answer to our disappointment.|Now…to the rooms. First room was great, minus its one with no balcony and was $299 per night plus taxes and fees! Second nights room had a broken ironing board, old tv with lines going through it as you watched, and no apps for streaming. Not what you would expect for $299 a night!|Then at 4:53pm the afternoon after we departed at 8am, they called me and were quite short about not having my credit card number to book the second night. I reluctantly gave them my card over the phone after already paying for the room when I checked in. Can’t wait to see if I’m charged twice for the second night.|Maybe having a wedding there is fine, but staying there will never ever happen again for my friends and I! My friends have stayed there the last three years for the race and they have nicknames it “Berry Hell” after...
Read moreThis place was absolutely phenomenal. If you are into historic, countryside settings, this is the place for you. Myself, my 4 year old, my dog and my husband stayed here during the week on work trip, and we are so lucky to have stumbled upon the place. We actually had checked in somewhere else in South Boston but the place was disgusting so we left immediately and we're lucky enough to get a room here last minute!
The staff were so friendly and helpful, the housekeepers were incredibly accommodating and kept me stocked up with towels and decaf Starbucks coffee. Wish it could have been caffeinated, but I'm pregnant and trying to avoid the stuff. Anyways, the room was absolutely spotless and we were so happy to have a small patio off the back of our simple 'two queen' bedroom so that I could just walk straight out across our brick patio into a large beautiful field through a sea of crepe myrtle trees surrounded by cobblestone walls. The only thing that was unfortunate about the room was that there was no mini fridge or microwave, but there was plenty of ice available and they were actually small kitchen areas with microwaves set throughout the floor that our room was on.
The location is fantastic, set just a few short miles outside of town but still within about 10 minutes of anything there is to do in South Boston (which isn't a whole lot but it's close anyways). I would imagine most people staying here are staying for events and for the facility itself, not for the South Boston location. The grounds are well-maintained by very friendly staff who seem to really care for the place. You can take guided tours of the grounds.
There are two restaurants on the grounds, one in the mansion and one across from the main lobby. We were just on a business trip so we did not dine at the Mansion restaurant, but we did order room service from Darby's tavern multiple times and we were so happy with everything we received. The deep fried pickles were excellent and my daughter was very happy with the kids menu choices. Prices are very reasonable as well.
The continental breakfast was great. Very simple pastries, muffins, cereals, juices oatmeal and coffee cakes etc. Thursday and friday, however, they had a very simple waffle machine set out with delicious batter that both myself and my daughter enjoyed thoroughly. Plenty of hot coffee and tea options in there as well as things like yogurt and boiled eggs.
The pool house was absolutely gorgeous. It is separate from the pool and has the most beautiful French doors surrounding half of the building. I bet they open it up in the summer and it's incredible. You walk into the pool house and it smells like a sauna, and fresh wood, I'm sure that's because there is a sauna in both the women's change room and the men's change room! There are plenty of comfortable chairs surrounding the pool and they keep the pool house stocked with towels so that you don't have to use up the ones from your room. We swam at night every single night we were there, and the only complaint I have is that it's pretty dark when you walk out of the pool house so you may need to flashlight if you aren't too steady on your feet. There are lights on the brick walkways, but some of them were not lit.
Aside from the pool, they have tennis courts and they have lots of sports equipment available including things like cornhole boards. It's even quite kid friendly, and you have the option to have milk, cookies, and a book delivered to your room in the evening for your child.
Had we not been up there working, we would not have needed to leave the resort for anything at all during our entire stay. We loved it and will definitely be returning when we have our next project scheduled in that area. It's also somewhere that I could see myself and my husband going for a quick getaway weekend or even just to take our daughter out for a...
Read moreThis property is beautiful!
We stayed here over a long Labor Day weekend, as a planned get away from everything. This place fit the bill perfectly. Our first night we arrived late and checked into a double bed room. The bathrooms are fantastic by the way! But... By morning we had realized the air conditioning was not working, as the room was very warm. The staff was very friendly, and maintenance checked it out while we were out exploring the property in the day light. The front desk informed us that we would need to move to another room. We ended up upgrading to the Lafayette mansionette in the front of the property. It was a wonderful experience! Although, it obviously needs some maintenance and TLC... Example: The exterior door handle came off the first day, but I was able to easily fix it with a gerber from my bag.
The on-site restaurant, Darby's Tavern was great, but I wish the other property dining options were also open. However, I chalk that up to COVID.
We loved the overall atmosphere here. It was "fancy" and elegant, but without the stereotypical "arrogance" often associated with those words. It was like having full access to a museum, and that was the key to it's charm. It was an immersive experience that we loved. The resident historian Mr. Luck even took my family on a walking tour of the mansion. His stories were both informative and entertaining.
Other than overall maintenance and upkeep, the hiking trail from the mansion to the river needs significant upkeep. It is very, very poorly marked, and the map provided does not match up to the path. This is especially true while the fields are planted with soybeans. The permanent wooden trail marker arrows were more often than not, non-existent....and when they were they were often broken or on the ground. The majority of the trail markers were orange flagging tape that has obviously seen a season or two, and need immediate replacing. The trail also has numerous trees down blocking the path. It became so unclear that we followed a field edge back to the cart path. The majority of our hike was off trail walking along the edge of soybean fields. The cart path is very well marked because it's basically a road along a gas line. The Diamond Hill Cemetery could also use additional grounds keeping and upkeep.
I would also personally like to see one of the slave quarters reconstructed. One of the things I can appreciate about Berry Hill is that they do not try to hide their past. Instead they embrace it so that we can learn from it. Understanding our past is the key to moving forward.
The next time we come to Berry Hill we plan to stay in the Bruce suite to get the full mansion experience. If you love history this is a great...
