The Inn sits up on small hill with quite a bit of land around the backside of it. The Inn has a marking for Ben Franklin's postal delivery The original Inn is old. Though this place has a commercial kitchen & oodles of dining rooms, there is no breakfast served nor access to a kitchen. You must leave to have breakfast. There is no refrigerator to have cold water, drinks, or even ice. We were at this Inn as of convenience to friends. Didn't have any other motels in Spencer. Our friends thought this was supposed to be a NICE place. It's a weird place! The room was a very nice size. The bathroom was a nice size. The bathroom had another door in it. The lady said it went to another room but it was locked & no one could come in & we couldn't go out it either. Odd, but I figured this is an very old Inn, so layouts can be different. Late the next night, I realized that this door was by another staircase that was completely DARK. No lights by the staircase. That area was DARK! The beds were comfortable. The sheets were silky soft. The towels were soft. The bath mat was worn out. The magazines were from 2009 & 2008. The TV is a 17" monitor. Did have a remote. The air conditioner is old & did not get cold. It cooled the room only slightly. Woke up sweating during the night. The shower stream was that of a garden hose. The shower head obviously had a lot of mineral deposits so it didn't spray. Did have water pressure though! Shower was difficult to work at first. Did not know you had to jerk the handle out with force to get water on & ram it in to shut it off. Obviously the person answering the number I called didn't know that either. She was very condescending when I advised I couldn't get the water on. I had advised her I did not try to FORCE anything. She said she would be in about 9am & the help was to be in about 8am. That was the first time we knew the owners, managers, nor help weren't at the Inn. No one informed during the check-in. First morning I saw a gentleman leaving. The next morning another couple left. We only realized we were the sole persons when we came in late that night. Not a vehicle in the parking lot. Not a light on. No entry light. Nothing! Absolutely dark! Luckily had an app on my phone to light up the keyhole. Finally found a light switch. Absolutely NO ONE ELSE! If an emergency arose, we would have had to use the cell phones. There are no phones either. This is a huge building. Should a fire break out, I hope they have a great fire alarm system. If someone has a fall, heart attack, stoke, etc, you are on your own! If someone broke in, we wouldn't have had any help. It rained during the night. In the morning I figured it would be cooler outside than inside with the loud & inadequate air conditioner. When we were loading our vehicle to leave, I asked my husband if he had closed the window. He said no. Since it was raining off and on, I didn't want to have the rain blow in, so I went back in to go upstairs to close the window. I was being considerate of the people even though manager or owner was rude to me. When I was about to close the window, I heard a door close. Mind you, we were all by ourselves! The noise came from the bathroom! I am not a skittish person. I am a confident person. The only window opened was in the bedroom. The door leading to the bedroom from the hall was still open. The door going into the bathroom was open. The only other door was in the bathroom that led out to that dark staircase. I did not investigate. I bolted from the building as fast as I could get down those stairs! Had to pass that DARK hallway! Since everyone leaves early, how would the Inn know if an unauthorized person is living there or not? All I could think is that someone thought we had left & they were coming in to see if we left anything. We are all laughing about the "Bates Motel" in Spencer, MA! I give this a 2 stars only because the beds were comfortable. The sheets & towels were silky. Other than that, it would have to rate "terrible" due to the lack of amenities, friendliness, proper air...
Read moreMy husband and I were invited to a wedding in Spencer at the Spencer Country Inn. We arrived the day before on a Thursday and stayed overnight two nights for a Friday wedding. The restaurant served a varied menu and the food was delicious. It reminded me of the type of atmosphere and service that was common in the past, no hurried fast food, just good wholesome food, prepared with care and attention. The rooms at the inn were modest and comfortable. The cost per night was $68.00. In the morning, the wait staff served us a continental breakfast in one of the three smaller dining rooms. Lunch was equally yummy, with a good selection of sandwiches and complete entrees. The wedding on Friday night was held in the great room which had been transformed into a lovely venue for a small gathering of 70 people. The service and food was excellent with a beef or chicken choice for dinner. |Spencer Country Inn is full of history and charm, something you do not see very often. What others might see as outdated, we thought to be charming and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If you are looking for a modern hotel with WiFi and big-screen TV's in every room, Spencer Country Inn can not deliver. If on the other hand, you are looking to unwind and unplug, Spencer Country Inn is a sweet reprieve. There are a number of small dining rooms, as well as, the large function hall, making this an ideal spot for special events. We would return here and might even book a small function in the varied accommodations.Pleasantly surprised was our assessment of...
Read moreWe attended a 60th birthday party with approximately 16 people on February 10th. The room was beautiful and the service was ok - the waiters were rushed Out of the 16 people 12 ordered food - out of the 12 8 ordered seafood and a different kind each one. I had the scallops that were so over cooked they were like chewing rubber, the oven roasted potatoes were covered with a green spice that was awful - it was so heavily seasoned the potatoes were green in color. The salad was small and on a small plate so it was hard to eat without spilling on the table and the rolls were cold and hard. The only good thing was the creamed spinach. The baked potatoes others had were so over cooked that the skins were wrinkly and the inside of the potato dried out. The swordfish was over cooked and tasted fishy. The haddock was over cooked. The shrimp dinner came with 4 large shrimp buried in a bowl of stuffing that had "copy crab" in it. The other 2 seafood dinners were also over cooked. The red meat and chicken dishes were fine. I wrote the Inn as did another who attended and we have not heard back and our hand written letters were not acknowledged. It's too bad - some who were in attendance will never go again. I grew up in the Brookfields and have attended many weddings and other events there - I was disappointed to say the least and an acknowledgement of my letter would have been appropriate. The person who paid for the dinner should be compensated for the 8 awful seafood meals at...
