I stayed at the Big Lynn Lodge for a few days in August 2015 while visiting the North Carolina mountains for an art auction. The summary of my review is that Big Lynn is simply fantastic and is a friendly, welcoming place with terrific value.
Foremost, the lodge is situated directly alongside a valley, providing spectacular views from many of the rooms (some rooms do face the road, so if you want one with the view, be sure to specify when you reserve). The rooms feature wonderful porches with rocking chairs - perfect for reading or simply watching the changing sunlight play off of the gorgeous landscape. Inside, you'll find simple but clean and comfortable accommodations. Our room had a king bed with dresser and flat panel TV with a couple of chairs. The usual cable compliment is available, though with the beautiful views outdoors, I didn't watch much TV here.
The bathrooms in the motel room I stayed in was superb - equal to most well regarded hotel chains. That said, the hot water did take a bit to activate, but not at all objectionable.
Aside from the room, the lodge features a stunning dining room, game room with pool table, and a relaxing library. This is definitely an ideal place for a relaxing vacation or family get together. As a bonus, guests receive daily hot breakfast (made to order from a menu) and an evening hot dinner. The dinner has a set menu that includes meat, three sides, salad, bread, and dessert - second portions are available, save for dessert. I didn't find seconds necessary - the portions were quite fine and the food all tasted homemade. Of note - if you'll take advantage of these included meals, budget $2.50 per person per meal to tip the wait staff. They deserve it. They worked hard, were very friendly, and took care to make sure my dining here was most pleasant.
Of course, no place is perfect. I found the pillows rather firm for my preference and the bathroom items only included shampoo and a couple of soaps. If staying here, you may prefer to bring a pillow and pack some lotion/conditioner/soap of your own. Note that these are my only negatives in this review. That's saying something about how great Big Lynn Lodge truly is.
Let me conclude by thanking all of the staff at Big Lynn Lodge. They provided me with one of my favorite places to stay in all of my years traveling, and I will return. This is a gem tucked away in the North Carolina mountains. It's unpretentious, simple, but feels like a warm hug from a much loved relative. If you want a place to relax and be surrounded by friendly people, this is the...
Β Β Β Read moreMy family of four arrived on Wednesday to Big Lynn Lodge after a 3 hour drive. My husband, myself, and children ages 4 and 8. Check in was pretty easy. We were given a key to our room that didnβt work, I had to go back and get another key to βtry.β This key did work. We walk in to a room that was freezing. Fortunately, we were warned ahead of time that it was cold so to bring extra blankets and heaters. We plugged the heaters in, unpacked, and hung out for a few. We went to the dining hall to eat dinner, the food was great. While eating dinner the manager or owner not sure what he is (Hoyot) came to our table to inform us he had to go in our room and unplug our heater because the other guest were complaining that it was cold. Apparently the thermostat to the entire building was in our room (room 122) and the heat wasnβt running because our heater had the room heated up. We were ok with this, but thought it was weird that he had gone in our room while we werenβt there. After diner we went back to the room to get some rest for the next day. Our door had been left unlocked! It gets better....my entire family was in bed and sleeping when all of a sudden someone starts banging on our door like the police. Before my husband could get out of bed Hoyot has already unlocked the door and was coming in. He says that people are still complaining about it being cold and he needed to adjust the thermostat. UNREAL! The next day was Thanksgiving. We all got up, got ready, hung out, went site seeing, and came back to eat Thanksgiving lunch. We get to the dinning hall a little after 12, we eat lunch, and are just finishing up about 12:50. The waitress comes to our table and tells us she has to clear the table because they had a 1:00 seating. We were NEVER told you had to make a reservation for lunch. I was appalled. Spending time with our family on Thanksgiving was supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable. Instead, we were basically told to get out without being told to get out. Our entire experience was crazy. The room was old, outdated, and the beds are very uncomfortable. To top it all off when we checked out our bill was way more than expected. They charged us $15 extra per night for my 8 year old but my 4 year old was free. Insanity. They also charge all of us $15 for Thanksgiving lunch. My 4 year old didnβt eat the lunch and my 8 year old barely ate anything. Iβm only giving this place 2 stars because of the view and the food. If you have a family with small children, I do not recommend. There is nothing to do and they arenβt...
Β Β Β Read moreWe just stayed at the Big Lynn Lodge and I can whole heartedly say that my family and I are in love with this quaint little Inn that takes you back in time. We absolutely loved all of the charming and well thought out details of the lobby area. The moment you step in you are offered hot coffee, hot chocolate or tea. You can peruse the books on hand, play the piano, be a part of the puzzle that is being pieced together on the community table or play a game of pool downstairs. I think the biggest plus to this stay however has to be that they serve both breakfast and dinner, price included with your stay!! To all my Mammaβs out there meal prepping for trips or trying to yelp review a few places that your whole family can agree on eating at, THIS PLACE IS FOR YOU! After a long drive there or exploring for the day, it was incredible to just have dinner done for us. I am actually the one with the culinary needs in the family (vegetarian) and the owner was nice enough to come out and talk to me about what I could eat. You can tell they take pride in their food and it shows. The food is delicious! Oh, and an absolutely adorable touch is that they actually ring the dinner bell when they are ready to serve! A side note on COVID is that they were very open to placing our dinners on trays for us to bring to our room to eat there and they also moved our table to a corner for us to feel more comfortable during breakfast. We traveled through the area from Florida in order for our young kids to see snow. Our children were so excited that it snowed that the owner came in during breakfast with a sled for them to use on the hill. That little gesture meant so very much to us and our kids. It is little touches like that that make Big Lynn Lodge feel like a home away from home. The rooms are older but very well kept up. What isnβt old is the beds! Even our 9-year-old commented on how comfortable the bed was, versus other Disney hotels and cabins we have stayed at. They have the perfect mix of charming old touches. You can tell everyone who works here truly cares about your stay. Honestly, we cannot recommend this place enough and will be staying here again...
