We took a trip from Michigan to Tennessee for a week and stayed in cabins at the Smoky Mountains then drove to Kentucky and stayed at the Cabins of Birch Hollow (CoBH) i stayed in "The Blues Moon" & my parents took the "Woodsman" cabin. I figured the best way to do this review is to explain why CoBH has the upperhand over TN:
Overall the cabins in TN and KY are around the same size if you are seeking "luxury cabins". Getting a giant cabin isn't much more $ than getting a smaller cabin, just depends what you want. My parents wanted a small cabin with no stairs and no neighbors. I wanted a huge cabin with an upper deck, a hot tub and stuff to do close by. We both won at CoBH because they have a cabin for every taste and the cabins are LESS $$ per night than a night at a 4-star hotel in Michigan!
Both locations (TN and CoBH) have cabins that offer all of the amenities you desire; from a pool table to cathedral ceilings to a place to bird watch; whatever floats your boat can be found, BUT, hands down, CoBH had better QUALITY amenities than TN.
Here is why I will be coming back to CoBH instead of competitiors:
The Blues Moon had a VERY comfortable bed whereas our TN cabin was 4 miserable nights of no sleep at all for me. It was so bad I tried to sleep on the floor!! When we arrived at CoBH I finally got my first good nights sleep!
The CoBH cabins are secluded but not impractical. You won't see or hear your neighbors at all at however if you forget to buy hot dog buns you can get to a GREAT gas station in about 5 mins drive. In TN the cabins were REALLY close together. I'm not complaining; the mountains are gorgeous but again, it depends what you're seeking; we like peace and quiet. At night in TN we would walk around our cabin "suburb" and hear insanly loud neighbors screaming at their kids. However at CoBH we didn't hear anyone at all, ever. And the cabin next to you isn't really "next" to you. It's a short hike or fast drive away! It's GREAT!!!
If you stay at a Michigan cabin you downgrade. They call it "rustic" which means basically thrift store furnishings. CoBH is genuinely NICE, beautiful, luxury. No need to settle when you can have the best!!! PLUS THE WIFI IS GREAT HERE!!! I must work online daily and did with 0 issues!
*Whoever designed, stocked and decorated CoBH loves their job and takes pride in their work. I mean they genuinely put their heart and soul into it. They took the time to think through what would make their patrons truly happy. The Cabins in TN were commercially produced with nice but generic decor. The TN cabins were still very pretty but didn't have that "custom decor" feel. I seriously wanted to keep all of the furniture at CoBH especially the badass chest table with sliding top in the Woodsman cabin! And oh my, you must see the shower in Blues Moon!
The CoBH customer service is outstanding! Kay and Dale will treat you like family and quickly answer any questions you may have. If you ever need anything, they're a text away. This is service you don't get when you patronize a big corporate-owned business.
Mega wild life!!! Let me say i HATE "camping" but i love nature so a cabin or hotel is an absolute must for me. When we stayed in TN we sadly learned that a lot of the wild life is gone because the cabin sprays LOTS of pesticides so people don't complain about bugs. However in KY we got to see real wildlife in our own yard. We had lots of big skinks (lizards) walking across our deck! What's really cool is that if you don't chase them they will sun-bathe right next to you! They seem to live under the hot tubs so if you LOVE lizards keep your eyes peeled because these guys are magnificant! Big huge Beetles, adorable toads, turkeys, massive butterflies, turkeys, really cool bees, even a glamorous black widow by a log...im sure we would have seen much more if we stayed longer. I ran out of characters so here's the end: CoBH is a real gem!!! A genuine 5-star! Thank you again to Dale and Kay I wish you the most success and prosperity imaginable!...
Read moreOur entire family (ages ranging from 5 to 55). just spent 7 days at Southern Comfort at the Cabins of Birch Hollow.
The house was amazing. It was clean and comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with everything you could ever need (with the exception of food and drinks). Plenty of towels, extra blankets, garbage bags, and even laundry detergent were provided. The on-site washer and dryer came in so handy after spending our days hiking the Gorge. The cabins are in a private development, but they are positioned in a way that you feel totally secluded when relaxing in the hot tub or sitting by the fire pit. There is even a private train to hike right in the development. Internet and Satellite worked great all week, even with multiple people logged on at the same time. The house is well laid out and we never felt the least bit cramped.
Proximity is a short drive (less than 30 minutes) to Nada Tunnel, the Natural Bridge, and The Red River Gorge in Daniel Boone National Forest. Although this is not at all a “touristy” area, if you love spending time outdoors, you will never get bored. We hiked, rock climbed, zip lined, took scenic rides, and the guys even took a day trip to start the Bourbon Trail. The only complaint we had is that we couldn’t spend more time enjoying this beautiful area!
Katy and crew at Birch Hollow were fantastic! They even stopped by to see if we needed any extra supplies. We will definitely be returning to this...
Read moreStayed at the Lakewood cabin. It was nice and well thought out in terms of design and amenities. That being said, for 5 guests, the towel situation was abysmal. Especially for more than a two day stay. Highly recommend bringing extra towels that are adult sized for your stay. Especially if you are planning on using the hot tub. Little things for the quality and competition of being a luxury cabin getaway add up. The place was on inspection clean, however, areas like under the coffee and kitchen table were not swept. Sparkling cider was complimentary but not a bottle of wine as stated in the reservation notes. Wires for the couches were strewn about and it was very easy to trip over them. No kitchen towels, no internet password information in plain sight, no guest book that provided local recommendations on things to do... While it was cute there are many other companies to choose from when visiting the gorge. So...
