I read the negative review and wanted to reply. I live on the coast near Buck Hall. Mosquitoes are bad just about everywhere. Theyâre bad along the SC coast as well. Some years theyâre worse. We also have noseeums. They are nothing but wings and teeth, and swarm in the millions. Iâve heard of a lot of repellants for noseeums. The few that work require you to bathe with said repellant. I would not camp along the coast from mid spring to late fall when the bugs are bad. Tip #1: Mosquitoes and noseeums wonât bother you if youâre directly on the beach. The breeze keeps them away. Buck Hall is not on the beach. Itâs on the edge of a salt marsh where biting bugs thrive. Tip #2: Itâs hot and muggy at the same time the bugs are bad. And by muggy I mean itâs downright unbearable. If youâre not in the water, youâre most likely in the AC. And this campground / landing is not swimmer friendly. Boat traffic and oyster shells make it pretty much impossible to swim there. A little up and down from the landing are a few stretches where you can get out of your boat, but you have to have a boat to get there.
Next, Buck Hall is a fantastic public boat landing with a small campground. The landing has 3 great ramps and two spacious docks left and right. The approach to the ramps is set up to keep trucks & trailers moving smoothly. There is parking for 20 or so trucks with trailers at the top of the ramp. There is a parking lot for cars & trucks without trailers that has about 30 spots. The overflow parking is very close and looks like it will accommodate more than 100 rigs.
I havenât used the campground yet. Itâs always booked up when I have time to go. Iâve driven through it several times. It looks like there are about 30 sites with power and water. There is a pump out station with 2 or 3 lanes. The âno frillsâ tent sites are directly next to the Intracoastal Waterway. Those sites could probably fit 20 or so tents. If you had to set up in the âoverflowâ area, it sounds like it was a very busy weekend and you actually camped in the parking lot. Kudos to the staff for accommodating extra campers when they were full up.
There are 2 bath houses that Iâve used a number of times while boating there. I found them to be clean with toilet paper each time. There wasnât an âaromaâ like you might expect. I havenât used the showers, but when I looked at them they were fine.
Iâve never spoken to the camp hosts. However, their camper and site is clean and orderly. Most of the camp area has plush grass that looks manicured. The overflow parking area is obviously mowed often. I never see trash anywhere, and the trash cans are frequently emptied. Someone that had a bad experience with the hosts probably brought it upon themselves.
And nothing to do? The facility is 45 minutes from Charleston and 90 minutes from Myrtle Beach. If you canât find something to do, youâre just not...
Read moreHusband and I have been camping at this site for years but when they changed host it just went down hill. Most of the rv sites are now long term renters and you can only pick from 3 of the five camp sites to reserve while the other 2 are first come.
We love the last spot for the tent site as it is the quietest one but now when we come up there, the sites are always taken and reserved. Which this is one of the tent sites that says first come so how is it reserved? It is a bit strange. When we ask to reserve a spot we are told by the host that we have to come by everyday to reserve the spot for the day. Yet, someone else is allowed to reserve a spot ten days out that is supposed to be first come.
We were hopping to talk with the person to ask if there was maybe a pass or something we needed to reserve for more than one day but that person never showed up and we were there for 5 days. It almost felt like she was keeping those two spots reserved for her friends rather than letting it be open to the public.
We love this site but we won't be back because of the unfairness in renting the sites. If they ever go back to allowing everyone to be able to reserve sites in advance then we would be back. It's a shame that they have made planning a camping trip...
Read moreThis has to be the worst campground on state or federal lands I've ever visited. I have camped 15-20 nights a year on average for the past ten years in state or federal campgrounds in 17 different states and I'm very disappointed by this one. The view and location of the tent sites is lovely. Right on the water. And although buggy and hot, those are just parts of camping, especially in the southern coastal region of the country. The real issue here is that the campsites are extremely close together with no separation. So if you like headlamps shining into your tent at night, and being able to hear your neighbor's entire conversations, this is the place for you. We were in tent site T1 which had only one abutting neighbor and they made our stay noisy and bright. Plus, the bathroom is in the center of a grassy area with no undergrowth, so the spotlight from the restrooms and every passing car shown in our tent all night. When camping with a toddler, i usually worry about him causing too much noise, but here all the lights and noise kept him up until 10 pm while he tried relentlessly to fall asleep. I would recommend this campground to rv campers only, which is what the majority of visitors seemed...
