INCREDIBLE! ... I've always wanted to stay at the retreat on charleston, but had never known anyone personally to stay, so I had some hesitation. Upon arrival, we were met with the kindest young man at the front desk. He reassured us about our stay, gave us details about our accommodations, and had even cautioned us to drive safely on those dark roads on our drive up, and boy was he right! It was his helpful and genuine nature that made us decide, upon meeting him, to extend our stay to begin with. We figured, if the staff is this amazing, why should we hotel hop elsewhere? He was exceptionally good at his job. The bartender, Kim, was also welcoming, funny, and an absolute joy. Soon after arriving, there was a mix up with a DIFFERENT front desk agent, who was, unfortunately, not nearly such a delight. (She was incredibly rude and her deplorable lack of professionalism magnified the next issue at hand: she mixed up my payment, in which my card was set to be WAY overcharged) we are talking being charged THOUSANDS over! Another staff member, from the bar, also snapped at us when we were looking to find ice or an ice machine for our cooler... That bartender and that front desk agent were some oddly jarring interactions. However, the manager, (also named Kim) handled these situations with such professionalism, speed, and grace, that I was put back at ease. Kim was 10000% level headed and swiftly corrected the error of payment. She corrected the mistake and went above and beyond for us by discounting our stay. In addition, she treated us to the restaurant for brunch the next day. We ended up staying several days and thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the staff, the incredible location, the comfort of the property itself, and the warm hospitality. Although there may have been hiccups, the most important aspect was not so much about reaching perfection, as it was about the hospitality; particularly the recovery from unfortunate circumstances and/or attitudes. We felt very seen and heard in our concerns and our vacation turned into one of the best. PLUS? We found our new favorite "STAYCATION" spot when we need to escape the city! Maybe those other staff members had some wildly OFF days, I'm not sure, but our expectations were exceeded in the end. Beautiful hiking, lovely accommodations, and otherwise wonderful staff make this place a true destination! I will absolutely recommend this place to my friends in town. P.s. My dog adored our adventure there almost as much as she was adored there in...
Read moreThis is a long one. My boyfriend and I went for our anniversary, back in December. When we booked our room, it was 2 months in advance. To start, they were changing management and severely short staffed, as a result. That is why I am not giving a 1 star, but it is still hardly an excuse.
They were so overbooked (due to a wedding) that I didn't think we were going to get our room (and neither did the guests in line, ahead of us). When we finally got to our room, it was small and outdated. The fire alarm was easily from the 80's, the tiles and grout were stained and filthy. The carpet had a puke stain right next to the bed. I honestly wasn't comfortable staying but the cabins were booked, so we had to stay or cancel our anniversary trip.
Now for the important part.
The restaurant.
Now, when we booked the room, the website said that they offered complimentary breakfast. When we went to the restaurant, we asked about it and they said they don't offer it anymore. They told the couple ahead of us, and us, that there should have been vouchers in the room, if we booked a month in advance. The couple ahead of us had their vouchers but there weren't any vouchers in our room. They still let us have a free breakfast, but we had to chose from a much smaller menu. The worst part of it is they only had TWO items on that menu, so I opted to just buy something so I could eat what I want. They were out of all juices, except cranberry juice. The waiter was impatient and had an attitude with us, because we fought for our breakfast. Then it took almost an hour for us to get our food. There was only that elderly couple and one other family in the restaurant. They never came to offer refills, and when the food finally came out, it was way overcooked and dry.
I get that they were changing management and renovating, but I doubt I will ever go back. We will just save up for a cabin next time, and we suggest the same to whomever sees this. You can get beautiful views without dealing with this "resort", at the cabins.

Read moreNOT WORTH THE DRIVE! An hour from Las Vegas for 6:30 dinner reservations on a Saturday night. We were looking forward to seeing the 'renovated' lodge under new ownership/management. It was sad. A stuffed bear in the lobby that died at least 100 years ago and was moth-eaten with a missing foot and bald spots from decades of people rubbing and hugging (eeww) it. Still smoke stains around the fireplaces that did not just happen (you could tell no fires had been built recently). NO NEED FOR RESERVATIONS...DON'T GO! and after the experience with the restaurant, I would not even consider the hotel. No welcome when we arrived for dinner. The girl in jeans with a shirt tied around her waist at first acted surprised that we had a reservation and still asked how many. Never asked the name. Maybe 3 tables with people in the whole restaurant, then when we asked for a table near a window, we were told that the tables were not cleaned yet. ??? We chose one that was...as clean as it could get. When a waitress finally came to the table (I think maybe she was the same person who yelled across the restaurant about the tables not being clean), she could not answer questions about fresh or frozen. We ordered wings as an appetizer and after 25 minutes they arrived. When they were delivered to the table, we asked for extra napkins (glazed wings after all). We placed our dinner order, never received the napkins and when we bit into the wings they were COLD. Another 10+ minutes went by and we finally got the waitress to come to the table and told her they were cold. Her very rude response: "Well, they're cooked!" Well, I should hope so, but after 25 minutes, I could have cooked them fresh and not served them COLD. Her attitude was less than stellar so not wanting to risk the meal for what was to be a celebration, we tossed a $20 on the table and left. As we were walking out, they had people waiting for tables when there were still only about 5 seated tables in the entire restaurant. We wished them...
