I would not advise camping here.
We went camping at Mountain Lake Campground shortly after West Virginia experienced a large natural disaster. We assumed they had power since they were posting on Facebook and did not mention there was no electricity, but we were wrong. We were not offered any discounted rates for the rustic camping we experienced. The sites in area 1 were spacious with very little, if any, shade. Each site had its own running water.
Though, they appear to be kid friendly, our site was not. Within five minutes of arrival my 5 year old found rusty nails and broken glass scattered about, and burned beer cans in the fire. The fire pit was surrounded by a scant collection of rocks, bringing the ring to a height of 5 or so inches, making it easy for a distracted child to fall into the fire. There was also a 18 inch deep post hole where the old electric hook-up had been that my 7 year old stepped in. Thankfully he was not hurt! Next to the hole was 2 inches of heavy gauge electrical wire sticking out of the ground. Seriously, how hard is it to fill a hole in and cut the wire below ground level?
The posted speed limit will keep kids safe, but the contracted lawn service pays no attention to that as they are mowing at speeds up to 20 mph inches from the tents when the camp is busiest—8:30 pm. I have never been to a campground where they mow in the evening when everyone is back at camp. This made it impossible to enjoy the camp fire, when we had to shout to be heard. Not at all relaxing. Speaking of noise: Due to the power outage, most campers/RVs were running generators all day/night long, with no regard to the quiet hours.
This is the message I sent to them via Facebook. Note their response: ME: Hey MLC, I understand we have no power, but please please talk to those with generators who feel it is appropriate to run them all night long. They are really destroying the camping experience for us tent campers. I am sure you have a noise policy. Thanks, Shawn #111
July 3 Mountain Lake Campground: "Sorry."
I spoke with “Security” about the matter, asking him to enforce the policy and he told me, “Because of the heat, we are not doing anything about the generators…they all had a meeting about it.” It was below 70 degrees every night. When I explained I was camping in a tent, he laughed and said, “Sorry about your luck,” indicating that it was my problem, not his. I have never experienced such rudeness at any camp ground I have stayed. Thankfully, the family with the generator next to our site shut theirs off at 11 every night, but there were still 4 or 5 going strong all night.
Due to the noise and lack of quiet policy enforcement and rudeness from staff, we cut our trip short by two nights, even though we had already paid for them in advance.
I would not recommend this...
Read moreTheir website is very deceiving..you will be sorry if you camp there. Our family has a once a year family camp with everyone attending. This years camp took place at Mountain Lake Campground. We choose that site specifically because of their website describing them as having everything...."You never have to leave our campground"... We came to the campground 2 days after they had been hit by a very bad summer storm and in fact West Virginia had been declared a national disaster area...we did not know this fact...they did not attempt in any way to contact us about the conditions there. After 14 hours on the road, we arrived I ask why they hadn't called us to let us know or why they hadn't posted anything on Facebook and the answer was that they couldn't with out electricity/phone services...interesting as our whole family had cell phones and nothing was wrong with our service...all day while traveling and when we arrived...Our choices when we got there were we could choose to stay or find a different place (700 miles from home after a very long day, with no idea where we could find a place with power) and if we checked in and then decided to leave they would not give us our money back.....and they refused to give a discount even though there was no electricity...no pool...no bounce pillow...no ice there....no hot water....we were told all of those things were "perks" that the cost was just for our campsite. And yet there is a primitive area pays less according to their website..anyway our children had already checked in so we stayed too. the campsite itself was fair, very little shade. They didn't appear to be concerned at all with the campers at the camp ground, nothing seemed to be their responsibility...Perhaps Michigan is a different state, but when people are camping here park owner/rangers work hard to keep people informed of weather or other situations...we had two storms come through while we were there, no one came to see the campers before or after....because of the amount of people without power ice became like gold...if they had been concerned about their campers they could have easily found out where the National guard was handing out Ice and let us know...but that didn't happen...I felt like we were inconsequential to their camp ground. they did not follow their own noise policy at night...people ran generators all day and night...partied all night...it was never a problem they would address...another problem was the bathrooms, I have a physical handicap that affects my walking and balance... the shower area was slippery, no place to sit for dressing and a lot of sharp edges on the tiles...glad I didn't fall as I am sure that would not have been their concern either. We left 2 days early because we could not tolerate one more night...
Read morePlease read through all reviews and owner comments carefully. Note everyone who puts a bad review is told either one of three things, we dont have record of you, we didnt do anything wrong, or your fault for not complaining. But here's what happens if you do complain.
Main camp store closes at 8, no emergency numbers. At 9 after being out all day we return to our yurt to find the two next to us playing loud, music, screaming and observed open alcohol containers. Im normally pretty understanding, I have five kids sometimes noise is just noise. But they were so loud we could hear them in our Yurt. So my boyfriend went down to try and find security. At 906 pm was told well quiet hour isn't till 11. Oh great so where is anyone going to be at 11? Because it's loud enough now to be rude at 9...what happens after two more hours of drinking? At any rate at 11 and having to tolerate the noise and music for hours my boyfriend had to to back out to try and find someone. At which point the music was finally turned down, but the drunken yelling continued.
At 8 am when quiet hour was concluded for the night we decided to turn on our radio. Within minutes staff was there telling us we had to turn off our music. No wait...the quiet hour is over tough noogies right? Because thats what we were told last night. In addition, the owner lies on the review my boyfriend posted and says oh someone was there at 930. No, no they weren't. But at least true colors where shown when she says well tough quiet hour doesn't start till 11 so you have no reason to expect quiet. Well then at least be consistent with guests if I have no expectation of common decency at 9 pm, they have no expectation at 8 am.
At the very least, I went from excited I'd found a place I wanted to bring my grandkids to and make a regular place to visit to seriously disappointed that this is how things are handled.
This owner can now add liar to their list of my complaints. The person we spoke to just after 9 litterly told us too bad for the loud music and yelling quite hour is till 11 PM. There was NO ONE that made them turn down their music AT ALL. But very very apologetically the employee the next morning told us we had to or we'd be asked to leave per the owner's. This is disgusting way to conduct business. And if you read all the reviews I am not the only one who has complained about the loud music, drinking and carrying on in a "family friendly environment "
This place is absolutely anything but family friendly. Please take your business to the other parks...
