OMG the FLIES!!!!!! Savanna Portage the horror show. It was like something out of a Hitchcock movie. Upon entry of the park it sounded as if my car was being pelted by pebbles. Nope those are flies. You drive down the long dusty road and in your rear view mirror all you can see is a fly cloud.... and its following you... no joke. Try setting up your tent in that. Good luck brother if you make it out alive. I pray you brought a camper or RV... beceuse you will never want to step outside of it. Mmm how about breakfast...? Watch the swarm fall upon everything you are cooking... flies in my raw bacon why yes please!!! Oh and i forgot to mention.... 3 different types of flies.. plus a truckload of mosquitoes, enjoy!!! No amount of deet will save you. I've been camping all my life, never seen anything this bad. Expect to be covered in bites from head to toe... almost looks like you have chicken pox. The sound of swarming flies will haunt you... no escaping the hum of that many wings. The only way we got a moment of relaxation was driving into town and hiding in the local restaurant for a few hours. We couldnt take it any longer, cut our trip short, went...
Read moreThis park has it all... several lakes, picnic area, trees, trails, mosquitoes. There is a gorgeous picnic area overlooking a small swimming lake with a modern playground to entertain the youngsters. To get to the lake there is a RR log wall with about 6 steps leading down to the beach. The lake is rather clear and roped off for youngsters. A tree-lined trail wraps around the lake that takes about an hour to walk..giving you Grand views of the small lake. .bring your cellphone's GPS because many trails sneak off from the main trail. At points throughout the park you can stop your vehicle and hike a trail..including the State Park Passport Trail which has many hills - well worth the long walk...To access the park go north of McGregor approximately 8 miles..then drive 10 miles to the park entrance. Be sure and pick up the park map for there are many routes throughout the...
Read moreLess than impressed with this state park. We reserved a site and come to find out it is in a large clearing with three other sites...needless to say we were camping in very close quarters with strangers. The bathroom closest to our site (there are two) was in major need of upgrading, and I am not usually picky. The bathroom further away was nicer and worth the walk to take a shower. The trails were gorgeous and well kept but the bugs were horrendous. We reapplied bug spray multiple times but couldn't keep the flies and mosquito's away from our poor dogs. The bugs aren't as bad at the campground luckily. Also there was a barking dog and loud children (early in the AM) the entire weekend - maybe we just picked a bad weekend but I don't think we will be back too soon...
