We stayed at Desert Flower from 4/9-4/13. It’s a beautiful boutique hotel in Taos. A real treasure. Originally we booked Room 7 since my boyfriend really enjoys hot tubs but they did let us know it was out of commission during our stay. They very kindly offered to let us switch to Encanto which had a soaking copper tub in it. The owners were patient with us as we contacted them last minute via email on the road for a very late check in- making sure we got the code to our room and they included the code to the common space with a microwave. Encanto was a beautiful room. The tub is gorgeous alone but the artwork in the room was exceptional as well. My boyfriend enjoyed the copper tub. I enjoyed the full size toiletries that were provided which were also locally made by an indigenous and woman owned business. There was shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, lotion and a small flower shaped bar soap. They all smelled divine! There’s plenty of towels and even robes. We missed breakfast our first day but we had it every day after. The previous reviews about the muffins were accurate!! Don’t skip them! The breakfast is homemade by the owners and delicious. Get anything that comes with green chili. I mean that anywhere in Taos. My boyfriend especially loved the chokecherry jam. If you look across the parking lot you can see the chickens that provide your eggs. The hotel is fenced in with a courtyard with baby trees planted that are getting their start at life. You can’t hear any road traffic at night. You can hear the birds calling in the morning. I appreciated the extra blankets in the room as the boyfriend tends to steal all the covers. The HVAC system comes with a little remote and is one of the quietest units we have ever experienced during our travels. Our one complaint is small and perhaps unique to us. The room lights were dim to us and the room was quite dark especially in the evenings. Great for watching tv or dimming everything to soak in the tub with their super cute and very safe electric candles but we would have liked a little more light for reading. There is a mini fridge and they stock some snacks/drinks at reasonable prices if you are in a pinch. But there’s also plenty of room for your own snacks. We had a mini birthday cake in the fridge that we brought and other things and we didn’t need to move any of their refrigerated items to make room for ours. The hotel isn’t far from groceries, shopping or anything you might want to see in Taos and taking a day trip to Santa Fe was also easy (take the high road back to to Taos for a scenic drive). The owners are very kind and will help you with anything you might be interested in- a hiking trail or dinner suggestion. Taos is a magical place for artists and this place is no exception. Be sure to check out all of the art they have around their buildings. We hope to come back...
Read moreThe Desert Flower Taos, NM: this darling little boutique hotel was recommended by a dear, local friend for a girls’ roadtrip down for a visit. It is a completely renovated old-style roadside motel - designed with thoughtfulness, creativity, comfort, charm & connections to the local area. Easy access to all the fun in the area. |Rooms are comfortable and plenty roomy for its design era. We stayed in the CocoBolo room which is steeped in color and whimsy of a local artist (each room is slightly different in theme & layout). Our room was exceptionally clean! It is touchless entry to your room, with 24-hour touchless access to a tea & filtered water/ice station & dining area . The kitchen & office are open from 7:00 - 10:00 am.||The owners are the sweet couple who breathed new life into this hotel. They personally serve the morning breakfast, which consists of: THE BEST blueberry crumble-topped muffins made on-site; eggs provided by their gorgeous on-site hens; local, small-bakery fresh bread, bacon or sausage (locally produced) & hashbrown potatoes. DEVINE! |The grounds are quaintly xeriscaped/landscaped with native plants, shrubs, and brushes - most of which still had blossoms this late in the season. Window boxes & herb gardens line the stone & gravel pathway from the parking lot to the office/kitchen and rooms. There is a cozy fire pit area encircled by Adirondack chairs to enjoy listening to the nearby small fountain & watching the occasional overhead hawk and viewing the mountain ranges in the distance. |There are goats & a big, friendly husky which roam the property freely; none belong to the owners. There was also a beautiful, friendly orange cat (uncertain if it was another freeloader) strolling the property. |Everything from start to finish was very easy, relaxing...
Read moreThis property is more of a motel/B&B. It has seven rooms and each is decorated differently. When you first come in to a gravel parking lot, your first instinct is to leave and find another hotel. We decided to stay and give it a chance. The check-in office was closed so I called the number posted and they sent me a code to the room door, which is actually convenient. The room is small and tired but the beds were comfortable with nice linens and pillows. Bathroom is really small but had plenty of flufy towels. The gardens are overgrown and need work. Breakfast menu is limited to a couple of egg dishes, which were good, but it would be nice if they added pancakes or french toast, yogurt, fruit, juice and such that doesn’t require much prep. Coffee was really good and the blueberry muffins are delicious. The owners are very nice and it seems that they do everything themselves. They sell you this motel as an experience but I just don’t see it. It does have a lot of potential but they need to be innovative and make the property as a whole look pleasant, nice and tidy. |It took me a while to write this review because I really liked the owners, but I myself rely a lot on the reviews to make a decision on where to stay in my travels. If you don’t give them a 5 star review, they want you to address your issues with them directly instead of posting it, which I did. But, after much thought, I decided to post this review because the reality is, that this is not a 5-star property and it’s really a disservice to future travelers to give the...
