I agree that this hotel is like an oasis in the desert. The area is very remote, with few eating and shopping options and the only night life is what you create, so it is an excellent family , boaters and adventure get away. It is in no way like overrun tourist towns like Moab , Vail , and Park City- no tourist shops, breweries, fancy restaurants etc. A great place to slow down and enjoy the environment, family and friends. The largest appeal is to Lake Powell boaters - many stay here, but it is also great for some at least one week of ATV riding, canyon/desert hiking, canoeing or kayaking on Lake Powell or rent some power water toys. It worked for us because we were prepared before hand to have most of our supplies and meals in our room - same as the boaters do - they take most of their supplies with them. The room had a decent refrigerator , but small, so we also used and ice chest to keep things cold. The microwave was fine for making oatmeal and warming stuff up. The hotel does have complimentary 24 hour tea and coffee in the lobby, but no night employees for refills, so you should probably take some backup instant coffee, tea and creamer in case the beverage station runs out overnight. The only eatery while we were there was at Offshore Marina, 1-2 miles down the road but it only had things like burgers, fries, chicken tenders and built to order sandwiches. During our week stay, the breakfast was only from 10-10:30 AM - too late to be of any use to us so we were glad we brought plenty of supplies for breakfast in our room. Offshore Marina also has a small grocery section for basics and the same at the Lake Powell gas station. The on site Adventure Center was very helpful to us - renting us an ATV and phone mapping a route for us for an excellent half day adventure. The Adventure Center is also helpful mapping out hikes and places to put in kayaks , canoes and inflatable water toys. We enjoyed an excellent 3 mile hike to a fantastic narrows in Leprechaun Canyon - about 35 minutes from Ticaboo, the Adventure Center recommended and help us locate. We also had a nice 1.5 hour kayak on the lake one afternoon when the winds were low. If you prefer in room on screen entertainment, the wifi was fast enough for us to attach our computer and stream Netflix shows for our nightly entertainment also there were plenty of cable channels available. A very enjoyable stay when prepared. Other than Lake Powell there is not a huge variety of other activities. After 5 nights we felt like we had pretty much enjoyed all the good, non-motorized boating activities and had a great relaxing, roll your...
Read moreRented a family unit, which was advertised to include a number of amenities we were interested in, but will specifically speak to the dishwasher and outdoor grill. When we arrived, we found that the dishwasher had a sign on it that it wasn't working and an apology for the inconvenience, and we later that evening came to find that the unit also didn't have an outdoor grill.
It was a fiasco trying to figure out a workaround for not having a grill, the staff told me they talked to their manager who was about to go on a camping trip about the issue and that a maintenance order would be put in for it. Okay, cool, after 40 minutes and still no contact from anyone, was getting late and we were all getting hungry, had to reach out again and this time the staff had a workaround, it was to use outdoor grills that they had set up over on the patio of their restaurant. So nine at night, we're driving over to this grill just to cook the food and then bring it back to the unit to eat, nothing about this was convenient or planned. No grill showed up the next day, by this point the manager I guess was camping and didn't appear to have done anything, so we had to do the same thing again the second night.
We weren't planning on hand washing dishes while on vacation or having to leave the unit to cook food, and the fact that the manager was told what was going on before going camping and apparently didn't do anything, I don't even know what to say.
Staff was nice and empathetic, but was told the manager had just left to go camping after we'd arrived, so no one there was able to offer a discount or anything, just apologies. They told me they left a message with their management about it and said they hoped management would contact me about it.
No one has reached out, I needed to email them for a copy of my receipt and they charged me full price. Lovely, sent them a note about how I feel about that.
Unless you enjoy paying for things to not meet your expectations from a place where the manager is fine derelicting their job, I don't recommend staying there. The fact that the staff who was around was kind is the only reason I rated two stars, and honestly I'm wondering why I'm even doing that after writing this crap all out...
I'm changing this...
Read moreTicaboo vs. Defiance
Most of you reading this are trying to decide between Ticaboo (T) and Defiance (D). We stayed at both given D was sold out for our last night. Here are my comparisons:
Location. D wins location hands down. 2 minutes to the boat launch, 1 min to the gas station/convenience/liquor and marine store... its impossible for T to beat!
Food. We visited mid sept and T restsurant was already closed. Anasazi at D was open and good enough given location, etc. Not gourmet but after a long day on the boat, i ate my whole plate and enjoyed an overpriced bottle of wine. On the otherhand, T has gas grills and a common area sink to do dishes. So, cook for yourself and save $$. We brought a collapsible Colman grill we used on our patio at D that evened that score for us. TIE
Rooms. The room was had at T was at least twice as large than at D and had a couch. Both were equally clean... ish. No coffee maker in room at T, just crappy coffee in the lobby all day. D offered a Keurig, but only 2 regular coffee capsules a day. Had housekeeping service only one of our 3 nights at D and were not able to check in until about 6 PM. T was clean and ready, this stay. Last time we stayed we were given a completely dirty room, like not cleaned at all from the last stay. Plus T's sheets were a dirty white color which was not appealing. Guess I'd have to give T this round.
Pets. Both hotels are pet friendly (yay!) And have grass for my fur baby. Advantage on this one goes to D if you can get one of the rooms on the ground level, parking lot side as there is grass right outside your door. Otherwise their pretty equal.
View. D hands down. No view at T.
Staff. We interacted with only 2 ppl at T and both were friendly. Lots more staff at D and everyone was nice. Tie
Pool. Only T has a pool but it's been closed both times we've visited because of the wine. Besides after being out in the water all day, I'm not really looking for a pool. I guess T wins by default.
Overall. We like to cook most of our meals so T starts to pull ahead with the gas grills and large rooms. BUT, we always travel with our fur baby and our boat so I think I have to give it...
