Posted quiet time is 10 pm, caretakers decided to come by to tell us at 9 that we had been loud all day long and needed to quiet down then. We had kids ages 10 to 13ish riding bikes most of the day, so if you decide to stay here remind your kiddos to use their inside voices when outside playing; especially if your site is next to the caretakers site, because apparently they don't like to hear kids have fun. We were part of a large group and reserved 8 sites all together to accommodate all of us. One member left the site I paid for late Saturday to go home, but the site was reserved until Sunday. By 7:30 someone showed up and set up in our now empty site. They explained to us that the caretakers had taken their money and said it would be fine. It actually would have been if they checked with us first. When we asked the "caretakers" during their early "you need to shut up now" visit, about scalping our site they not only denied taking money from our new neighbors, but also claimed the site was abandoned, despite the fact that it was in my name and I was standing RIGHT there! There's no check in system, nor are there anymore group sites, but seeing as our group has camped there 26 out of the last 30 yrs we wanted to be back at the original space for the 30th year, so we individually booked sites together. This place is not accommodating to large groups by any means. During our discussion over why they took additional money for a site that I paid for and reserved, in addition to the new 9pm curfew that was special for only us, the female caretaker went so far as passively suggesting that one of our female members was responsible for the "mess" in the ladies room. The bathroom had this "issue" since early in the morning and stayed that way throughout the day despite these people making their rounds multiple times during daylight hours. Apparently, cleaning the facilities isn't in their job description and if it is they don't use them, so it doesn't matter to them about the guest experience. After we said we'd quiet down at the posted 10 pm time the "caretakers" left only to be immediately followed by the cops for a noise complaint. This was our second visit from the local PD, the first being 20 mins after we arrived the previous day (insisting we were smoking pot, despite us saying we weren't. I even went so far to show him my pack of clove cigarettes because I had just finished one when he showed up) What should have been a fun relaxing camping trip turned into a frustrating couple of days that all circled around the people who were supposed to be in charge of the place. Don't expect them to leave you alone once they've "identified the problem" and don't expect them to listen to reason. They're right, regardless of the situation; even if you know they're lying. Call them out, they'll call the cops on you. The only reason I gave them 1 star was so I could leave...
Read moreThe campground is alright. A bit close to the road and sites are small and close together. Not really a problem. However, like other reviews, the camp rangers were absolutely rude. My group consisted of late 20s and early thirties individuals and at 10:05 we were told we were too loud. I admit we were talking a bit loud. However, instead of just saying that and asking us to keep quiet, the rangers insinuated that we would be arrested if the noise continued. I have never been threatened like that for simply having a conversation around our fire. After this situation it seemed we were then targeted for the rest of our stay. Someone had unfortunately made a mess in the bathroom, and like clockwork, we were the first to be blamed for the mess. I insisted that we did not, as I saw the man responsible for it. On our last night, the rangers were making the rounds and we were getting ready for bed, packing up leftover food and garbage. The woman ranger had apparently turned her flashlight off and stood in the darkness watching us. My friend asked I flash my flashlight in that direction and sure enough she was about 20 ft away just watching us in the darkness. I kept my light on her and she continued to stand there. This is not only highly unsettling but no way to act in any situation. We have a friend visiting from out of country and this is the experience he is receiving from the state of New Hampshire. The last situation involved a citation we received for leaving a single igloo cooler of some water at our sight. Previously we had made sure to clean everything from our sight and we received a citation for a water cooler. On top of that in our two day stay, we saw two cop cars driving through the grounds with their lights on. I am simply lost for words for a place that claims "live...
Read moreWe had a pleasant two night stay at Campton Campground. The entire campground is wooded, and sites are evenly spaced around two loops with trees between campsites. Each site has the normal views and noises from adjacent campers that one would expect at an established campground, but the buffer of trees between campsites kept us from feeling too close to neighbors. Campton Campground is one of the few Forest Service campgrounds in the White Mountains with flush toilets, sinks, and showers, so that was a convenience. Water spigots are appropriately placed around the campground. There is a field in the center of the campground for gathering, picnicking, or playing, and we saw kids riding bikes around the campground. The front of the campground is closest to the road, and from those campsites the road is visible through the trees. Inconsistent road noise is heard throughout the campground by day, but it wasn't severe, and it didn't detract from our visit. By night, the road was very quiet and noise was mostly undetectable.
Campton Campground is simple and basic with a pleasant, wooded atmosphere and a few conveniences such as modern restrooms. I recommend Campton Campground as an enjoyable, simple, convenient place to camp in the southern...
